Zach Duke makes All-Star Game
Zach Duke is making his first appearance as an all-star. He will be replacing Matt Cain who was struck with a line drive last night that hit his pitching arm.
Duke is only 8-8 on the year, but we all know he has gotten about as little run support as one can get. A total of 10 runs have bee scored in his 8 losses.
Duke is also the first Pirates pitcher to make the All-Star game since Mike Williams in 2003

How many pitchers said no to All-Star invites before they got to Zach Duke? Ten? Thirty?
Yeah, Keith Law knows since he has actually sat down and watched all of Zach Duke’s starts. Just a dumb comment by an uninformative writer.
In this case, it's a
dumb comment by an uninformed writer that loves bashing on the Pirates.

I agree, Law is a tool.
I mean, he actually thought that Pedro Alvarez was overrated pre-draft, and then criticized the Pirates for taking him instead of Smoak! The nerve!
Yeah, professional athletes hate being the object of glory and fame.

I like Duke as much as the next guy...
…but at this point in the season, he hasn’t been one of the ten best starters in the NL. There are lots of guys with better numbers.
Put on your objective hat for a second, and tell me how Duke is more deserving than someone like Yovanni Gallardo or Javier Vazquez.
Out here in SF the Giant announcers
are whining that Duke got selected over Brian Wilson to replace Cain.
Brian Wilson is a relief pitcher
typically starters get replaced with starters and relievers with relievers, etc etc.
Screw what they say.
Zach has totally re-dedicated himself to becoming a better overall pitcher. He’s tops in the league with 3 CG’s, 3rd in IP, should be in the top 5 in wins instead of 9th, and he’s had 13 — 13 — quality starts out of 18 this season. And a 3.29 ERA and 1.21 WHIP don’t hurt much, either. If anything, he should be suing the Pirates for a lack of run support. I bet if he wins half of the six games that he’s lost with a quality start, he’s a no-brainer pick with an 11-5 record as opposed to 8-8.
Another example of why win-loss record is such an over-inflated statistic.
Congratulations, Zach.
Some pitchers, such as the Braves’ Javier Vazquez and Jiar Jurrjens, probably have a better case. But Duke is deserving of a spot as well.

Nothing to do with Duke but...
Pedro Alvarez went 1-for-2 with an RBI single in the rain-shortened Futures Game today as Team USA’s DH.
Linoln pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up one run.
Rain-shortened?
That sucks. It’s hard enough to get a look at some of these prospects as a casual fan even without an early call.
duke
here comes the pittsburgh pirate all-star curse, he becomes an all-star cya later pittsburgh, i see duke leavin by the dead line now.. his stock will never be higher
CITY OF CHAMPYINZ
