Knowing this information...

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox "are willing to assume virtually all of shortstop Julio Lugo's remaining salary in a trade."

They've informed teams of this too, according to Rosenthal's sources. That should allow a deal to move quickly, perhaps before Mike Lowell and Jed Lowrie are ready to rejoin the club. Lugo, 33, is batting .284 this season with a .352 on-base percentage and eight RBI in 123 plate appearances.
Do you suspect maybe there could be some sort of trade that would get the Pirates Lugo for the short term while the SS in the lower levels develop?  I've listed Lugo's contract info below.

Julio Lugo inf
4 years/$36M (2007-10), plus 2011 vesting option

Better off.....

signing Jack to a one or two year deal at $4-5 mil per.

Exactly. Lugo is a downgrade from Jack Wilson.

As a Red Sox/Pirates fan… NO NO NO.

Julio Lugo is bad at everything he does. I would rather pay Jack Wilson than have Julio Lugo for free. He can’t hit (actually looks better this year when used sparingly), his range and arm have evaporated with age and injuries, and he’s not even a good baserunner. Don’t let any of the prospects near Julio Lugo, they will learn bad habits.

Grew up a Red Sox fan in New England, moved to Pittsburgh and caught Pirates fever. Well, it was more of a rash… but really, I just loved that I could actually go to games whenever I wanted to. Being able to walk up to the ballpark ten minutes before game time and buy a ticket was awesome to me. Great ballpark, nice fans, relaxed atmosphere. Now if they’d just win some games.

With Lugo on the market, the demand for Jack Wilson is diluted.

When was there ever any demand for Jack Wilson to dilute?

When was there.....

demand for Lugo? He is untradeable. More likely to be released.

by David Todd on Jul 17, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

True

But there’s probably some G.M. out there who simply wants to plug a hole, which is one fewer slot for Jack to fit into.

Especially given the fact that Boston is going to pick up alot of that salary, something Pittsburgh definitely wouldn’t want to do with Jack.

Ummm...no!!!

I’d rather have a statue of Jack playing shortstop than Lugo. Or even Brian Bixler would be better than Lugo.

I’ll save you all the trouble…fielding-wise Lugo is DEAD LAST in the majors for shortstops (at least any that have played more than 1 game).

Acquiring Lugo

Would be like pullin a Littlefield.

If he comes fully subsidized, it might be worth it.

Free crap is still free! And you can sell crap!

If that were the case...

the Red Sox would have already dumped him. The Red Sox could release him…and I wouldn’t want the Pirates to sign him for minimum salary.

by Thunder on Jul 17, 2009 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

and...

the Red Sox have now designated Lugo for assignment.

by Thunder on Jul 17, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not one of those people, but...

If we acquired Lugo I would stop watching this team.

Don't worry

The Sox just cut Julio lugo. DOes this create a market for Jack?
