Which trades should the Pirates take and leave?
I've been looking at mlbtraderumors.com and there are some interesting possible deals.
Rios for Maholm? I say take it. You have a power-hitting RF (no disrespect to Moss, well, sort of) for a subpar pitcher. If Toronto does pay a portion of his deal we could have a cheap power option. To be honest, I'm surprised Toronto would pull that kind of deal, yet this guy make it sound like a tough decision for us.
Make or Break?
Another one that I like is from a recent post by thecheeseisblue. Capps for Colorado's Eric Young Jr. and Casey Weathers. Now this again may be a deal for colorado to make or break, but if they do, I do. Jr is most likely the fastest guy in milb. He already has 48 SBs. I believe he led the league(milb) in SBs in 2007, but I'm not sure about 2008. He'd give us a spark of pop and a SB threat we really need with Morgan and McLouth gone. He also allows us to deal Freddy. I also think we might get Joey Williamson into the deal and push Weathers out, but that might be a stretch. He's a great reliever for A-Advanced. 10-1 with with a 3.76 ERA and 62 Ks in 69 IP. Plus, batters are hitting just .234 against him.
Make or Break?

I like Kyle Drabek. Watching him pitch in the Futures game made me just think get that guy. I say if it works trade Duke straight up for Kyle Drabek. If we can get another prospect, do that too. I doubt the Phillies will take the deal. I can see why.
Make or Break?
Also, why trade Sanchez? I highly disagree with the Sanchez for Sanchez deal. Even adding if we got Bumgarner it might still feel like the McLouth deal. You hate giving up the best player on the team, but you do like the prospects and deep down might believe it was the right deal. I was reading Dejan's chat and noticed something that I think he is exactly right on.
"bertbpman: DK - If the Pirates are able to trade Jack Wilson, do they currently have anyone who can be another everyday shortstop?
Dejan Kovacevic: Honestly, though no one ever mentions his name, Sanchez could do it. He is a good, if not great, shortstop. The main reason he has been kept away from there -- aside from Wilson's presence, obviously -- is fear of wearing him down. ... As for anyone else? No."
This could let the Pirates have Jr. and Sanchez both in the middle infield. Jones, LaRoche, Rios, Doumit have good power. Milledge could do well, to.
Maholm deal might not work. We already have McCutchen, Tabata, and Milledge. I personally want Jones in there. That is why we have to leave it up to who wins the starting jobs out of 2010 Spring Training. Who do you think will make up the 2010 OF? Answer in comments.

There's
no way we get Bumgarner for Sanchez. If we could, then I would do that deal quick before The Giants GM got off the crazy pills.
If would be nice to get Doug Drabek’s son for Duke but I don’t see the Phillies doing that.
Maholm for Rios is a possibility but there are negatives and positives on both sides.
The only deal that is even remotely possible is the EY Jr. deal but that is starting to look that a long shot in itself.
I love how he thinks that the Giants best prospect/one of the best pitching prospects in baseball (a guy they said they wouldnt give up for Roy Halladay) they would give up WITH Jonathon Sanchez (who just threw a no hitter) for a 31 year old second baseman…yes. That would happen…

Trading for Alex Rios would be an epic, monstrosity of a mistake. Courtesy of Cot’s, what he’s owed from 2010-2015:
10:$9.7M, 11:$12M, 12:$12M, 13:$12.5M, 14:$12.5M, 15:$13.5M
That’s a whole hell of a lot of money for a guy who is trending downwards, paid out for the next SIX SEASONS. He’s a good player, but he is NOT worth staking your franchise on. That’s a lot of money for a large market team to take on for Rios. For the Pirates? That’s a franchise-ruining mistake.
Baseball Prospectus says the Pirates should try Sanchez AND Laroche for San Francisco’s Tim Alderson. Meh. I’d like to see another prospect in there for the Pirates, since a lot of scouts see Alderson as a back of the rotation starter. Also as I’ve said before, the Giants could be happy with Travis Ishikawa at first because of his great glovework.

dont agree… at least not yet, alderson might become a dominant starter some day, but right now, we’d want more for sanchez.
Also, if LaRoche walks after 09, we get 1 draft pick, maybe 2? (if he gets classified as a type A, any chance)

Clearly, Rios would be taken on if his salary is taken care of (somehow, I dont know how :-o )
Still, I don’t know if I do Rios for Maholm- maybe, if we dont pay for him.
Sanchez for Bumgarner would never be offered. I m tempted to say it would be a no-brainer to take it, and we definitely shouldnt stop because “it might still feel like the McLouth deal”. While the McLouth deal mayn’t produce the required results, I’d say the intent was right, and McLouth stock isnt likely to rise much.
Sanchez for Sanchez, I think we’d need another piece.
Capps for Casey Weathers and EYJ- maybeeee, not sure, if we wouldnt want a better piece than Weathers
The best case I see for Jones, if he keeps his hot-hitting up is 1B. If he indeed proves able to win an OF starting job in 2010, I d be surprised, and I don’t know what that would say about our farm system! But let them win it out of Spring training, and/or 2nd half 2009 performances.
Not going to lie
That was probably the first time I had ever seen or heard the word “mayn’t.” It never even crossed my mind that could possible be a real contraction, but I looked it up and turns out it is.
Learn something new everyday, I guess.
As far as these trades go…I would trade Sanchez for Sanchez…and another player.
There is probably no one on our team that would force the Phillies to trade Drabek.
I like EYJ, but a the same time I’m a bit skeptical of him. If you look at his home/away splits this year in AAA you can definitely see that he benefits from his home ballpark.
Rios for Maholm will never happen, unless Toronto pays essentially all of Rios’ remaining contract.
As far as trying to acquire MIF talent, I think we should maybe try to get something together for Tampa Bay and try to get Reid Brignac. He seems to be blocked there and the Rays could use a little bullpen help for the stretch run and beyond. Capps for Brignac?

ok...
If the Phillies are not sure about including Drabek in a deal for Holiday, then why would they trade him straight up for Duke?
Capps for Young II? LOL… Colorado will never do that.
Laroche for Bumgarner? LOL!
You guys...
are vastly overrating the value of the Pirates players. Especially at a time in Major League Baseball where prospects are viewed more highly than they’ve ever been before.
You do realize you’re talking about guys like Bumgarner and Drabek in return for Sanchez and Duke? Really?
Alderson wouldn’t be enough for Sanchez and LaRoche? Seriously? Alderson’s the third rated prospect on the Giants, who have a top 5-10 farm system in the majors depending on who you ask. If Freddy and Adam had cheap long term contracts, maybe we could talk about Bumgarner in some kind of wacky multi-player deal, but these are expensive guys that aren’t locked up.
Get real.
The only one that has a remote chance of happening is the Capps one. The Rios one would be a bad move for both sides, maybe more so for us – Rios is expensive, 28 years old, and has consistently underperformed expectations. Maholm is cheap, 27 years old, and has overperformed expectations. The rest would be heists for Pittsburgh that WILL NOT happen.
Although I’d love the idea of having Kyle Drabek. I love that idea enough that I’d trade anyone except McCutchen and package them any way the Phillies wanted. I have to admit, it’s more because he’s Doug’s son than the fact that he’s been very impressive so far, though.

i never said these deals wld happen
i said i think they are interesting 1s. but, might not be enough. i mentioned 2 most of Rios’ contract would’ve been paid. is there anything, any of you agree with me on?
When we hit you, you don't get up. When you hit us, we get up laughing.
Grabow and Snell for Eric Young Jr….Then Capps to Tampa Bay for Reid Brignac…theres yours SS and 2B of the future
There is no chance in hell they’d give up Brignac for Matt Capps, given the Rays refused to include Reid Brignac in any trade involving Jason Bay:
But the Rays steadfastly refused to part with any of their top four prospects, including shortstop Reid Brignac, highly coveted by the Pirates.

that was last year though... and now with Bartlett becoming an All Star
and the emergence of Zobrist who plays in the outfield now but was brought up a SS… and there number one 1st overall pick Tim Beckham is a SS of there future… Capps is a Young closer and Brignac is blocked… im sure there has to be maby another player involved but i think they could get it done… its not like the Rays are short at that position
