Is Garrett Jones our Roy Hobbs?
Can an old rookie, left hand hitting corner outfielder with both power and speed join a last place team during the season and lead them to a championship? Sounds like life could be imitating art here in Buccoland!
Russell affirmed that sizzling Garrett Jones will retain a regular role. "I like what I've seen," Russell said. "Very much." Sounds like a quote from Pop Fisher to me.
We can dream can't we?
PS: I refuse to link to or provide more about The Natural. IMHO, it is the best baseball movie. If you have not seen it (and should own it), you are not a baseball fan!
PSS: BYW, I am refering to the movie not the book (the book was awful!).

i do own The Natural, but
Jones isnt takin us 2 the world series, but I do lov him. he’s playin great. like Cutch, 2.
i swear 2 god if the pirates trade them . . . . . .
When we hit you, you don't get up. When you hit us, we get up laughing.
It’s a full time job shooting down these comparisons with Nelson Cruz, Carlos Pena, Jack Cust, Ryan Ludwick, etc., etc.
No kidding
My baseball-reference.com bookmark has been getting a ton of work lately. It’s not that hard to look this stuff up yourselves, people! Pretty soon, I’m going to start demanding payment for doing all this.
The difference is that Jones’ max upside is having one average (hitting only) season in the majors. The upside for those guys is putting up huge, .900+ OPS numbers. It is a large difference.

Roy Hobbs was 35 in his rookie season. He took so long to get to the majors because he left baseball at the age of 16 when he was shot by a crazy fan.
Garrett Jones is 28, and never left baseball. The reason why he took so long to get to the majors was because his performance never merited a promotion.

If you think that analyzing a baseball player’s performance and coming to the conclusion that he’s a bottom-rung major leaguer at best is the same thing as wanting him to fail…

I doubt Jones can provide the type of spunky veteran leadership that it would take to improve our team’s defense, hitting, and bat boy production. Also, even with seven homers so far he has yet to destroy a single light in the stadium. Unacceptable.

I think Matt Morris deserved all eight million of his contract
due to the veteran presence he provided.
Putting Aside How Much "Veteran Presence" Is Really Worth
How can a guy who has played in 43 major league games provide veteran presence?

Hey, Roy Hobbs was able to do it without any time in professional baseball due to all his life experiences. WTM just verified above that Jones was a pitcher before getting shot by a crazy lady. That’s a valuable life lesson that some of our youngsters don’t have to learn the hard way.

True
Too many of our young men are getting shot by crazy ladies for lack of an elder’s warning that getting shot by a crazy lady is bad.

Pop Fisher: My ma urged me to get out of this game. When I was a kid, she pleaded with me. And I meant to, you know what I mean? But she died.
Red Blow: Tough.
Pop Fisher: Now look at me. I’m wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I’m choking to death!

Garrett Jones....... Little Papi......
Only a year older than Big Papi when the Twins let him go….. Albeit with about 1500 less MLB ABs when the Twins let him go…….
A man can dream, can’t he……
Sure, as long as you realize...
…that you can’t fly anymore once you wake up.
David Ortiz, in AAA, at age 23: .315/.412/.590, with 68 extra-base hits and 79 BB. Jones has never, ever had a AAA performance approaching that, not even during his recent peak seasons.
Ortiz was a top prospect who couldn’t break through in Minnesota because he didn’t get along with Tom Kelly. Jones was organizational filler who couldn’t break through in Minnesota because he wasn’t very good.
