Wasting Away In West Virginia?

A bit of a minor league update, with the details for a few players that haven't been mentioned in detail for a while:

West Virginia:

Just a guy named Rudy and a lot of young potential here...

Rudy Owens - First and foremost, the guy nobody thought about before this year. Owens pitched another six innings of one-run ball tonight. He now has posted an absolutely absurd 1.17 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, and 73:7 K/BB in 77 IP since his last messy start on May 2nd. That's thirteen straight starts where damn near nobody has touched him. What is he possibly gaining from mowing through the same hitters over and over again? I remember there being discussion of Owens' promotion from West Virginia to Lynchburg mirroring Lincoln's move to Indy...so what, exactly, are they waiting for? They finally moved Erik Huber up a notch for a hitting performance just as impressive as Owens' pitching, and Huber is the lesser prospect.

Calvin Anderson - I'm about ready to move Calvin off my radar for a while. Since his strong April, Anderson has now posted a .263 average and .738 OPS to go with 62 K's and only 21 BB's in 209 AB's since then. He's still "only" 22, but he's got some serious work to do to be more than just a big body with some random power.

Erik Huber - Speaking of Erik, he made his debut with Lynchburg tonight and went 1-4, after spending the month of June ripping apart Sally League pitching to the tune of a .400/1.016 line. Sure, it's mitigated by his being 24 and starting the season repeating the level - which, in reality, might just make him Steve Pearce v2.0, but something is always better than nothing in my book.

Also of note: Last year's 25th round pick Brian Leach struggled in a start Thursday (he was recently inserted into the rotation), but had been strong until then, carrying a 33 inning shutout streak prior to that outing..,,,Starling Marte hasn't snagged a lot of XBH in recent days, but it's been 70 AB now and his average is still at .352...Robbie Grossman is still struggling. I'd be freaking out about his 36% K rate if he wasn't still 19...Casey Erickson, the pitching half of the Eric Hinske trade, pitched another two scoreless innings of relief tonight, giving him seven scoreless innings of relief to go with his lone six-inning start.

Lynchburg:

This team needs to make some moves in the near future. They currently carry three catchers, and while one is irrelevant driftwood, that still leaves three players to sort through if Tony Sanchez moves up before Kris Watts or Eric Fryer does. Also some pitching notes...

Kris Watts - After a miserable May, Watts started to come back in June (.286 avg, .942 OPS) and now appears to have fully rediscovered his bat (.349/.896 in July). Of course, that doesn't change the fact that Watts just celebrated his 25th birthday Wednesday, did so by going 0-for-2, and hasn't had an at-bat since.

Eric Fryer - Watts has, of course, lost those at-bats to this guy, the hitting half of the Hinske trade (how alliterative of me). Fryer still has only 13 games under his belt in our system, but he's on a nice 7-for-24 run (along with 6 BB's) in the last week, so perhaps he can make some headway soon and give us a happy problem at catcher.

Matt Hague - I know he isn't an uberprospect, but I'm not sure why nobody even mentions the poor guy's name. He finished last season hitting .321/.854 in low-A ball, and began this season at High-A. His overall line of a .301 average and .786 OPS looks rather uninteresting for a High-A player about to turn 24, but that line is in large part due to a poor first month. Since May 1st, Hague has posted a .364 average and .924 OPS including his current seven-game hit streak (11-for-31). Not saying he's the saviour, but show the kid some love.

Also of note: A shame that Chase D'Arnaud might have to pack in his season, he was performing well at the plate and in the field and may well have reached Altoona by month's end...Not sure what's going on with Jeff Locke, but he's only pitched 14 2/3 innings in his last four starts (pitch count, I suppose?)..."Mr. CWS" Justin Wilson continues to struggle, posting nine walks to only seven strikeouts in 15 1/3 IP this month: perhaps he spent some time around Duke Welker and it rubbed off...Ronald Uviedo (much to my surprise) is down in the GCL now...and (again in the something > nothing category), Bryan Morris had a start that looked like a pitcher who actually belonged in our farm system, even if it wasn't sparkling.

Altoona:

Looks like three solid prospects and a bunch of scrubs for now...

Pedro Alvarez - The boy has finally come to play. He posted his fifth multi-hit outing in his last ten games tonight, and now has his average up to .378 in July (of course, it being Pedro, I don't need to tell you his OBP/SLG/OPS are also huge). He'll probably finish the year at Altoona, but if he keeps this up we can probably ease up on that worrying we were doing up through Memorial Day.

Jose Tabata - The second member of the triumverate has also had a strong July, posting a .328/.823 line that has brought him up to a .279 average and .725 OPS. There's still not a lot of power, but he is still getting on base (through both hits and walks) and he still isn't 21 yet.

Gorkys Hernandez - His numbers are still a small sample size, so I'm not going to worry too much about Gorkys' struggles. He's a mess against lefties and is still striking out a bit too much, which makes me wonder if he's a bit of Tabata Lite, offensively speaking.

Also of note (see how quickly I got here?): Brian Friday's bat has disappeared completely...Yoslan Herrera pitched seven scoreless innings Thursday, if anybody cares...Jim Negrych may have finally come out of whatever offensive dungeon he's been in, posting a .358/.1.009 line thusfar in July after riding the Mendoza line in May and June...Kyle Bloom has a 2.60 ERA in eight starts since June 1st - and the peripherals of...well, Herrera...Derek Hankins finally returned from the DL at the beginning of June, with very mixed results so far.

Indianapolis:

Lincoln and Lastings and offense, oh my!

Brad Lincoln - Tonight Lincoln continued the struggles he's experienced since the quality start he made in his first AAA outing, giving up five runs on nine hits in five innings while only striking out one batter. Given the performance he put on at Altoona this year, I still have faith this is merely a period of adjustment for him, but that faith may waver if these struggles continue into next month.

Lastings Milledge - Looks like the headcase we got from Washington might actually be good at this hitting thing. Milledge posted his fifth multi-hit game in seven Indian appearances and is now 13-for-25 with the Bucs' AAA affiliate. During tonight's game, Greg Brown also mentioned that, in a pre-game radio inteview last night, he was grateful to our organization for providing him structure that he had not been given with the Mets or Nats. It would be nice to see him hit for some power, and I'm curious what mechanical flaws the staff found that needed fixing while he spends (at least) the rest of this month in Indy, but I'm excited for his arrival.

Also of note: Tom Gorzelanny has a 1.04 ERA and 34:12 K/BB in 34 2/3 IP since returning to AAA... Daniel McCutchen has ceased his bad longball habit (only one in his last eight starts) but still appears to be a bit of a Jeff Karstens clone... I'm beginning to doubt if we'll ever see Eric Hacker in a Pirate uniform... Bryan Myrow might be old roster filler, but .290/.900 roster filler is better than, oh, say Kent Sakamoto... knock Steve Pearce all you want, but he's got a .286 average, .879 OPS and 44:33 K/BB ratio at AAA - there's nothing he can do about MLB performance when the team won't give him regular at-bats.

Also a final note: I'm planning a round-trip at the end of the minor league season (Aug 26-31st...ish) that, timed accurately, will allow for three games (Altoona, then State College, then West Virginia) in one weekend, if there are any folks out there who would like to make it a group effort.

Kris Watts

He’s out for a week or so due to minor surgery.

I mean, seriously Neal, what are you waiting on? Get Milledge up to Pittsburgh! The kid is tearing the cover off the ball.

by mspirate on Jul 19, 2009 12:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

neal’s waiting until the pirates trade someone… probably Adam LaRoche first…then he can bring up milledge and move jones to 1B

by BigB23 on Jul 19, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s true, but we probably aren’t going to be able to trade LaRoche, and Milledge could play over Moss/Young right now anyway.

Good report geeves!

Just curious….what dates are u plannin on goin to these games?

by BadAndy on Jul 19, 2009 12:21 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

well

the curve play the 25th-27th, Spikes are 28th-30th, and WV is the 29th-31st.

so the plan is 27th and then either 28th-29th or 29th-30th (leaving leeway for travel time and ahem whatever else might happen)

Pearce

He has had plenty of chance in 2008. and failed miserably.
He did not get a lot of chances, so far in 09, but with the ones he had, again , he failed miserably.

Enough of him, and his wild swinging.
There are plenty of other options that can be used at the major league level.
If we lose him after the season, or better yet, get anything for him, the team is much better off
Pearce not on the roster, is no big loss, actually he is blocking people now, so this is addition by subtraction.

Who...

is Pearce blocking at this point??

by Thunder on Jul 19, 2009 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, in some weird roundabout way

perhaps you could argue that pearce, and not salazar or jones, is blocking milledge. but that’s certainly a reach.

He had plenty of chances in ’08, and failed miserably

He came up at the beginning of July, only got a couple PH at-bats, and went back down. He then got three weeks of regular playing time (15 starts in 24 games from July 26 to Aug 19) and, while he did struggle, was given no chance to see if he could get sorted out – he got six starts and six pinch-hit appearances over the next month before finally playing every day the last week of the season.

He has been given little to no chance to prove himself as an everyday player at the major league level. All this Pearce sucks" talk is a bit exaggerated, to say the least.

Agreed

"Baseball is better than football. Think about it, eighty degrees, a cold beer and a short-sleeve shirt is better than 30 degrees, a hip flask and six layers of clothes under a lap blanket. Take your pick: suntan or frostbite. " - Thomas Boswell

"Miserable failure"?

He’s got a .703 OPS for his (brief) ML career thus far. That’s a perfectly decent season for a bench player, or a good stepping-stone for a future regular’s first cup of coffee.

If you start wasting terms like “miserable failure” on .700+ OPS seasons, what language is left for actual miserable failures, like Bixler’s ML career?

Uviedo...

has been rehabbing after some health problems (related to his throwing…can’t remember what though). That’s why he’s been at Bradenton.

Charlie

Thanks for the update, enjoyed reading it…

On a bad note, I heard Brown referring to Morton last night a “Chuck”

by God Loves on Jul 19, 2009 8:52 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That is pretty bad all right

Our Charlie might have to find a new favorite player.

Thanks, but Geeves wrote it, not me.

Brought this up in the other thread

Tabata’s line isn’t all that great, but his K rate is under 12%, which is frickin amazing for a 20 year old in AA ball. If the power he’s shown flashes of comes in consistently, he’s going to be something special.

Nice write up

It sounds like our minor league system has a decent start for being rebuilt. The sorry state of our minors is probably underlooked by the casual fan as a big part of the problem that the new regime faces.

by Trogluddite on Jul 19, 2009 10:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably underlooked?

Heh…go to any Pirates-themed blog or news site like this one, and look for yourself.

As I recall

Hernandez had an extremely high BABIP when the Pirates acquired him, so his luck is probably just evening out a bit.

At least we don’t have to endure DK’s daily “Hernandez is 4 for 37 since being acquired in the Nate McLouth trade” updates anymore.

by maguro on Jul 19, 2009 11:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Jeff Locke?

No mention of him? He is getting abused in AA ball. I also read from a Atlanta Brave Minor League scout he didn’t think Gorky was MLB Material.

I have high hopes for Pedro and I wanna see what Sanchez can do in AA ball, but overall the future looks bleak.

by psunate77 on Jul 19, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

read then type

“Not sure what’s going on with Jeff Locke, but he’s only pitched 14 2/3 innings in his last four starts (pitch count, I suppose?)”

by geeves on Jul 19, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and

locke has been roughed up, but he’s had a couple other outings where he didnt give up much and still wasnt out there long. which i could see some pitch counts

by geeves on Jul 19, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Locke is in Single-A Lynchburg, not Double-A. But yes, he’s getting abused.

by mspirate on Jul 19, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t care how many innings he has pitched, he’s getting abused. Would “lit up” be a better phrase for you?

by mspirate on Jul 20, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Braves' scouts didn't think Gorkys was MLB material...

…then it’s strange that they’d have chosen him as a big part of their return in the Renteria trade. One would think that in those kinds of situations, they’d want to target guys that they’d project as future MLB-ers.

Promotions

I just wish this organization would be less hesitant and have more faith in our young pitchers and hitters, this is so frustrating to a fan, I really wanna see what rudy owens can do at the next level and tony sanchez I just don’t see how much more owens has to prove. I mean cmon guys I want milledge up here too and stop platooning the two wannabes moss and young. Youngs a good PH that’s about it, moss simply isn’t doing enough to show me he can play everyday.

by baseballssp3 on Jul 19, 2009 12:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not a matter of not having faith in those guys.

It’s a matter of not wanting to bump Justin Wilson from the A+ rotation yet, and already not having enough catcher AB for Kris Watts or Eric Fryer even without Sanchez jamming things up.

For everybody who moves up, someone else has to get bumped (up a level or out of the lineup).

by Vlad on Jul 20, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

to your adjustment

point, Vlad, i would argue the following:

is there anything wrong with moving sanchez up, moving watts up, and then either ditching lerud or moving him up and ditching kratz?

and then, sure you need to make room for owens at lynchburg, but wilson (in spite of his miserable control) doesnt have to be the victim. paul mildren is nothing special, nor is cheng or mcswain. there are multiple fungible arms in that stable that could make way for rudy.

by geeves on Jul 20, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ditching Lerud would be odd...

…insofar as they thought enough of him to add him to the 40-man roster last offseason. Ditching Kratz would also be odd, in that he was just named to the IL’s All-Star team, and it’d be kind of hard to explain to the fans in Indy (and the owners of the affiliate, with whom they would presumably like to stay on good terms). And as much as Lerud has struggled at AA this year, he’d get eaten alive at AAA right now.

Cheng is an actual prospect, given that he’s young and misses bats and was a top international signee before his arm surgery. McSwain and/or Mildren could probably be bumped, I guess, but I still don’t see the all-fired hurry to push Owens when he’s still in his first year of full-season ball anyway.

by Vlad on Jul 20, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could be mistaken on this

but I’m close to 100% sure someone had an article link on some post in the past few weeks that quoted someone high up in the Pirates organization saying something to the effect of…

Rudy Owens will not be moved this year because this will be his first full year without a significant injury. Therefore they want to see how he completes a full years worth of innings and they don’t want to move him up a level and add extra stress.

He’s going to finish the year and still be age twenty-one and even if he isn’t facing tough opposition at WV, he can still work on this stuff, his approach, etc etc.up

Assuming all goes well finishing the season and he tears it up in Lynchburg right off the bat next year, he could be moved to Altoona and get a half season + in there before his 22nd birthday. Sounds like a solid plan for me.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jul 20, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Er. my mistake

I have this

“rob king brought this very topic up in a recent pregame interview with kyle stark. kyle said that they generally don’t concern themselves with any kind of aggressive promoting until the end of a player’s first full season of pro ball, and in that first year they instead focus on steady improvement and finishing the season healthy.”

quoted from another poster here at bucsdugout, but I swear there is an article too. I will continue to search.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jul 20, 2009 12:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah

that was me, quoting a pregame interview king did with kyle stark, oh…two, three weeks ago?

i appreciate the “full solid season” sentiment, but when you’re being THIS dominant i’d think there must be a point where you peak and then start to backslide out of the boredom that lackluster opponents who are no longer challenging would create.

by geeves on Jul 20, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Power Players

i get to see the Power about once a week. The only benefit of keeping Rudy Owens in WV is so we get to see some wins. Seriously, he needs called up. i talked to him before the allstar break and he seemed to think he was going to get the callup. I hope his spirits stay up.

Looks like Calvin Anderson will finally get some time at 1b since Huber got called up. He looks like he could have an above average glove there if he’d ever get to play it instead of DH.

Tony Sanchez – Not only is he killing the ball but since hes shown up here in WV, he’s taken over a leadership role on the team. Plus, hes a super nice guy.
