Game Thread

Perhaps we can make this the game thread, since Charlie's apparently otherwise occupied, or perhaps the timed thread did not go up?

It's forcing me to get 75 words up to make this a fan post, so we can use it as a game thread. What shall we talk about? The weather? My upcoming shoulder surgery? How are you? Are you watching or listening to the game? The rain delay is over, so here we go...

[Ugh--my fault. Thanks for taking care of this, cocktails. -Charlie]

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the managing editor (Charlie) or SB Nation. FanPosts are written by Bucs Dugout readers.

Why am I seeing Vazquez again?

He’s getting more PT than Steve Pearce. Damn!

Why not Young at 2B and Pearce in RF? And Vazquez resting his bones.

Yeah, but it’s Vazquez.

by cocktailsfor2 on Jul 2, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

Aha, there is a game thread

I’ll add my comment on the recent trades.

I believe our new pitching coach, Coach Kerrigan, is a better judge of raw talent and a better "fixer" of pitching problems – both systemic and for single outings – than either the long-reigning "Spin" Williams or whoever we had before Kerrigan. When we hired Coach Kerrigan, I concluded that we had a commmitment to winning that had been lacking before. His presence is a forgotten story behind all of our trades this year.

by Trogluddite on Jul 2, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

I’ve been bringing this up to my friends, that this guy is great, and is getting new pitchers to work with. Hopefully we are stocked up in pitching in the near future.

The Mets aren't really this good,

are they?

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Jul 2, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

NO.

They have a ton of injuries to key players – Reyes, Delgado, Beltran. Tatiste is a nice back-up outfielder and 1B (think Moss). Schneider is a light hitting catcher, Omir Santos is a medium to light hitting catcher. Cora, who’s starting at 2nd or short today, is a dime-a-dozen.

by Trogluddite on Jul 2, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

You know what is annoying?

We get quality starts Monday and Wednesday and lose. We put up 5 runs for our “ace” and he can’t hold it.

by vanslyke on Jul 2, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, Paul has fallen off the deep end. He can’t hit a spot to save his life. This guy is our “ace”? He is throwing BP fastballs and has given up 5 runs in 5 innings to a terrible Mets lineup.

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Lack of good defense

creates hard spots for pitchers, leads to bad pitching, which allows teams to take advantage of bad defense.

by Phantaskippy on Jul 2, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Belt high off-speed pitches

creates hard spots for pitchers as balls make contact with bats and leave the infield.

by Trogluddite on Jul 2, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you really going to blame Paul’s terrible pitching on the defense? What do you want them to do?

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t mean to blame it as much as I did, just trying to point out that bad pitching makes defense look bad and bad defense makes pitching look bad. We got both right now.

Just didn’t express that well. Sorry.

by Phantaskippy on Jul 2, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently,

DY could’ve cut off the double & held it to a single, and caught the other one (that perhaps Moss would’ve got to), so yes,

The bothersome thing about this year's team

…is how they are untiring in mixing and matching ways to lose. They used to be so predictable in years past. But this year, we can have stellar starting pitching and fail to get a run, we can jump out to a big lead and give it back, we can get absolutely shelled, or we can repeatedly fail to hit w/RISP and die on the vine.

needed a c ouple on there

by biglar33 on Jul 2, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s why he’s playing and Moss isn’t right now. It took Jones two games to hit the same number of home runs as Moss has all season.

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You’d better think about what you’re saying there.

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Jul 2, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I know what I said. I’m just saying…this team is starved for some offense and some power right now. Moss has no power. I know it’s just one game, but unlike Pearce, Jones has quickly carried over his Triple-A success to the big leagues. If Jones keeps hitting like that, it will be hard not to play him a lot.

by Green_Wave on Jul 2, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right about that

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He was also

0-fer last night, and let a ball get by on a failed dive.

Let’s let this “power” play itself out…

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Jul 2, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, the “power” thing is already being played out. Hey, I want to let Moss play, too, to see if he is going to be a piece of the future, but it’s been a year now and he hasn’t shown anything, and desperate times call for desperate measures. And as far as power goes? Jack Wilson has more HR than Moss. Enough said.

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

"Enough said?"

You are reverting to your “quick dismissal” pattern that made you a pariah when you first came aboard.

Let’s talk about how Moss had the only RBI last night while your new BFF Jones went 0-fer, shall we?

by cocktailsfor2 on Jul 2, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

It's about time

I’ve been following Jones in the minors. I was wondering when he was gonna get a shot, he was tearing it up.

by thecheeseisblue on Jul 2, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

I think

tearing it up would be giving him too much credit. He was hot right before he came up though.

by Slizeezyc on Jul 2, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

6 outs to go

need at least 2 runs. They might be able to do it…or am I having the wool pulled over my eyes by Neal Huntington?

Definitely the wool

We can’t win because Nuttimg won’t pay for those two runs.

That was a beautiful hit if it weren’t for the Met second baseman standing directly in the path of the ball.

Haha. Moss can’t catch a break.

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

well

it’s impossible for him to come in for the save now so why not

by Green_Wave on Jul 2, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm such an idiot.

I stuck it out through the rain delay, then took the T home after the sixth inning.

jeez.

by Suffering Buc on Jul 2, 2009 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

They only come back like this once or twice a season. Plus it’s starting to rain.

by cocktailsfor2 on Jul 2, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep…I don’t have nearly the faith in Capps that I did two years ago. And I don’t even know what to say about that throw by Cutch. This is the major leagues, right?

by mspirate on Jul 2, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Cutch has air mailed quite a few over everyone on those throws home from listening to the games. Probably need to work on him to get the accuracy on those throws. He seems to have the arm strength just a bit too much ooommph on the throws lol. Better than underthrowing the ball like alot of our previous outfielders would do.

by lfhlaw on Jul 2, 2009 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

time for another comeback?

by Green_Wave on Jul 2, 2009 5:27 PM EDT reply actions
