Matt Wieters Update

Ok, I know this topic shouldn't be dragged out again but I promise not to harp on the past (too much).

Anyway, Matt Wieters is hitting only .244 with 3 Hrs in over 120 ABs. IMHO this is not too great. I think we expected much more. He is only 23.

I watched him last night during the Yankees game. They stole 3 bases on 4 tries. The announcers kept saying "The Yankees will see if Wieters can throw anyone out." Finally he threw A-Rod out with a nice throw. Wieters also seemed to do a nice job behind the plate. However, McCarver wasn't the announcer so I didn't get his "expert" opinion.

He faced Mario Rivera for the first time. He looked totally overwhelmed and confused.

Why mention the above? Well, just because. Let's see how he does over the next few seasons. Will he turn out to be the stud they predict or a dud? We shall see!

The only system that had him tearing up the league THIS YEAR was PECOTA, which is pretty accurate, but can also be wrong. I think he’ll be the next Piazza as far as hitting catchers go, probably with better defense as well.

Most rookies don't set the league on fire.

They often need an adjustment period of a couple hundred AB at the start. All told, I think he still has a long and productive career ahead of him. Though of course, nobody knows for sure until it’s done and in the books.

I don't mind you bringing it up

I do mind that you didn’t pair it with a Moskos update. You cannot do one without the other and assume any relation to the Pirates.

This seems like the Garrett Jones small sample size dilemma, in the opposite direction.

All due respect, zogger,

but who really cares a rat’s arse about Wieters?

Well put but....

It does bring up the question if RIGHT NOW we would want him to be our starting catcher or not. If he had drafted him, then would Doumit be sitting? Interesting problem, right?

Fair enuf.

IMO, he would not be playing ahead of Doumit at this stage of the game.
