LaRoche Traded

On twitter Perrotto and Dejen both are saying LaDouche has been traded, I was very happy to hear the news that he was gone and I haven't even found out who it was to or who it was for.  I hope we got some decent propects or players back but im not going to hold my breath seeing as he hasn't done much of anything lately and we really are selling low on this guy.  Has anyone else seen these reports?

Cards Fan here

We are hearing strong rumors the Chris Duncan was also traded to Red Sox. So possibly we 3 are involved in a 3 way deal.

Oh jeeze

another bonanza deal by the BoSox and Pirates

Word is we’re getting Yeiper Castillo http://www.soxprospects.com/players/castillo-yeiper.htm

and a PTBNL

Just to clarify:

We’re talking about Adam and not Andy, right?

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

yes. Andy is LaRoche, Adam is LaDouche

by samvescovi on Jul 22, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeiper Castillo – a wonderful prospect! Has a 5+ ERA in low A ball. Another great trade by NH.

by Pola43 on Jul 22, 2009 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

Just to be clear:

You’re criticizing NH for the deal that he made when all that we have is an unconfirmed report of one of the two players coming back?

Keerist.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

As someone pointed out, we’re giving someone 2 months of Adam Laroche and a few million in salary that comes with him…while he’s in a slump…when he’s usually heating up.

Probably not getting Alcides Escobar here.

RIP NATE. RIP TONY PLUSH.

The part that's crazy to me...

…is that we don’t even KNOW at this point what we’re getting for him, and yet people are complaining anyway.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

If that and a PTBNL is what we got, then yes, it was a bad trade. I’d rather have the draft picks after he goes FA than a mediocre A level pitcher and someone who’s probably worse than that as the PTBNL. In case you haven’t noticed, not many of Neil’s acquired players are lighting anything on fire. Then again, I didn’t expect anything for Adam LaRoche. Let’s see what they get for Freddy.

At least now they can call up Milledge and move Garrett Jones to 1st.

by Pola43 on Jul 22, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

LaRoche...

may not have gotten us draft picks.

by joegonzo on Jul 22, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

See, this is the kind of thing I was talking about:

Until we have at least a guess as to who the PTBNL is, how can you properly evaluate the deal? You’re making assumptions, which may or may not be warranted.

I should also note that LaRoche would need to go on one hell of a hot streak to bring back picks-in-the-plural, since he’s currently right on the border of Type B and no compensation, and that we’d have to offer him arbitration (which he might accept) to collect any picks at all.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking of posting some analytical reply here, but this’ll do instead.

by WTM on Jul 22, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

In case you haven’t noticed, not many of Neil’s acquired players are lighting anything on fire.

Yeah, I wish he would have traded for a pitcher who just threw 7 shutout innings the other night, and posted a 3.21 ERA since joining the team.
Or I wish he would have traded for a pitcher who had a share of the team lead in wins.
Or it would have been sweet if he would have traded for the guy just named Batter of the Week in the IL.

by Bucko on Jul 22, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yinzers all rag

on our crappy players but think they should fetch Pujols.

by bucdaddy on Jul 22, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

If this is what we get then I’m not going to complain about it.

by ravidesai1984 on Jul 22, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

not bad...

Diaz could be special defensively even if he makes Jack Wilson look like Babe Ruth in comparison at the plate. I don’t know enough about Strickland other than what I’ve just read. Seems like a decent throw-in with some potential.

by Pola43 on Jul 22, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately...

Diaz has been a disaster defensively, and he can’t hit at all. Strickland looks like an okay pitcher with some projectability.

Not much of a return, but I’m not sure how much they could have gotten for LaRoche anyways. This is probably a pretty good haul.

by AdamHyzdu on Jul 22, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

That's pretty much my take as well.

Strickland is potentially useful down the road, and Diaz looks like a glove-first backup at best.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Dejan is confirming it’s Diaz and Strickland.

BA, btw, refers to Diaz as a potential Gold Glover. Doesn’t sound like a disaster.

by WTM on Jul 22, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, what I meant is that he was hailed as a defensive wiz (read his SoxProspects bio) but has been extremely error-prone thus far. Sometimes it takes a while for players to get defense down, so hopefully that’s the case for Diaz.

by AdamHyzdu on Jul 22, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It took a while for Jack.

I remember Jack Wilson being less than perfect when he was first a big leaguer in 2001…

by IAPiratesFan on Jul 22, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t pay much attention to errors at this stage, especially not SSs and 3Bs. There are a lot of firstbasemen in class A and AA who couldn’t dig out a potato, much less a low throw.

by WTM on Jul 22, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Salary dump!!! Salary dump!!!

Oh, sorry . . . wrong blog.

I do want to point out, though, that I’ve been saying all along that when a deal happened, it’d be something that wasn’t in any of the rumors.

by WTM on Jul 22, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

Total Salary Dump

How can they trade Adam away? He’s best defensive 1B in baseball. And remember all those home runs he hit? Those were awesome too. I mean, you would think that we don’t stand a chance of winning a World Series this year. Think of all those season ticket holders they’ll lose now that LaRoche was traded. I mean, he was the reason I bought MLB EI every season. I’m so gonna cancel it now!

by IAPiratesFan on Jul 22, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

your crazy if you think adam la roche is the best at anything in MLB, he is garbage glad hes gone

if the red sox get him where will he play because 1st base is youklis and DH is Big Papi so where would they put him. I’ll Adam at first over anyone he can play the position he does have a tendancy to hit into double plays at bad time but he has very few errors in the field who is going to play first now

by WVPiratesfan on Jul 22, 2009 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

As I was discussing in an earlier thread...

…where I speculated that Boston might pursue Freddy, Boston needs insurance against a sudden and complete failure of Lowell’s hip, which is in very poor shape at this point. If he can’t go (or can’t go every day), they’ll use Youkilis at 3B and LaRoche at 1B.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yippie!

C—Doumit
1B—Jones
2B—Freddy (for now)
SS—Jack (for now)
3B—the better LaRoche
LF—Milledge
CF—Cutch
RF—Moss/Young

The future is looking more and more now.

by bucdaddy on Jul 22, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

No no no

I don’t expect Jones to be gone by the trade deadline, is all I meant. He’s a temp too, but for just how long is pending further developments.

by bucdaddy on Jul 22, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

So is it safe to say that everyones hopes that Pedro was just swinging at bad pitches cuz the kids in A ball were scared to come near the plate have been confirmed? He’s been raking in AA

Not bad for a Sub-B defensive 1B with a penchant for tanking early

If he hadn’t totally checked out a month ago, they may have gotten a better prospect, but true to form Mario did everything in his ability to make sure the Bucs got the least value for him.

by Pensburgh Pirates on Jul 22, 2009 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

Some of my friends are already complaining and whining. It’s getting to the point I consider opinions about the Pirates to be on the same level as religion and politics. I’m certainly not going to shut out people who have contrary opinions to mine, but arguing about it does no good and just makes me mad.

by CptnAwesome on Jul 22, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

So with the addition of Diaz ...

Does this mean a promotion for Friday to Indy?, or will Diaz just play as Friday’s backup in Altoona?

by Pensburgh Pirates on Jul 22, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

I checked out the PBC blog

You know, just for laughs. But actually, almost nobody hated the trade. Something’s wrong here.

by thecheeseisblue on Jul 22, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

People hate Adam because they think he’s a choker, sucks, etc.

They like the trade because they hate the player, not because they think it’s a good baseball move or anything like that.

by CptnAwesome on Jul 22, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess that means everyone on here loved the guy

But thought it was a good trade for the team.

Sorry, I just get tired of hearing about how the casual fans aren’t allowed to their opinions. I got emotional over them trading McClouth, and posted it on here, and heard about how wrong I was for feeling that way.

But after the smoke had settled and I looked at how it IMPROVED the team, I felt better about it. So, I don’t feel like it’s imparative everyone gets chastized for getting excited/emotional about moves that the bucs make. It’s a part of the sport, something successful teams learn to harness.

Having said all that. I am very happy to see Mario go, and will not miss him, even if they end up with a gaping hole at 1B for the rest of the season.

Where would...

these guys rank in our top 20 prospects? Would they even be in our top 20?

by joegonzo on Jul 22, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

I don't have Vlads pedigree

But I agree neither makes the top 20.

Why is Diaz going to Indy!? Is he really better than Friday!?

by Pensburgh Pirates on Jul 22, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope that all the people...

…who are thrilled to see LaRoche gone right now will be able to look back and remember how they felt in three months.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

It may be hard in three months,

But by May next year, I’ll be very happy that I haven’t watched Mario compile a .179 average while blocking anyone from having a shot at 1B.

Won’t miss him. Just wish he’d have played better the last 4 weeks, so we may have pulled another player or some other bonus for trading him.

by Pensburgh Pirates on Jul 22, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

You wouldn't have watched that...

…whether he was here or not.

Seriously. Remember this thread, and at the end of the year (or June of next year), look back at what we were getting from LaRoche, and what we’ve gotten from Garrett Jones or whomever since the trade.

by Vlad on Jul 22, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

End of this year, June of next year

doesn’t matter. 2010 doesn’t matter. 2011 probably doesn’t matter.

2012, baby … KINGS OF THE WORLD!

by bucdaddy on Jul 22, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

The fans won’t ever miss Adam LaRoche. Right or wrong, they’ll miss Garrett Jones’ 70 at bats if he is taken out of an everyday role from here on, if Pearce doesn’t catch fire.

by Gorkys n' Beans on Jul 22, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Never liked him, don’t care, won’t care in 3 months…

I'm droppin' flava, my behavior is hereditary--but my technique is very necessary.

by phillybucco on Jul 22, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I am totally thrilled to see him leave

because I dont think there was any chance he would have stayed with us after this year and then, if he was not traded, the best we could have done would have been Type B compensation or none at all.

I could care less what he does in Boston the rest of the year. If he does begin to stroke it like he does at the end of every year, good. And if Garrett Jones comes back to Earth and Pearce doesnt hit either and all of a sudden we have two terrible hitting first basemen, I will not care. I am so happy the Pirates actually got two decent baseball bodies in return for him.

by Jett on Jul 22, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

thank god

in 3 months, la roche will be hittin .254 with 16 HR’S as a power hitting first basemen, thank god he is gone
