Giants vs Pirates Overflow
Lincecum is destroying the Pirates, until the 6th when they managed to put together an error and a 2B with a couple productive outs for two runs. An absolutely terrible defensive game for the Pirates. Could be a new K high for Lincecum (previous high is 13). At least it won't be three straight shut outs. Really not much more to say. Must get to seventy five words. six, five, four, three, two, one.

It should realistically be 2-2
if you get rid of a couple defensive mishaps

Still maintain it should be Bucs 2-1
if wilson doesnt miss the grounder… there should have been 0 ER 2nd inning

DY. Who would’ve thought he would be the defensive bright spot of the game?

Great play, DY.
He’s quietly contributing on both sides of the ball…no one talks about the fact that he’s one of our better hitters.
Though today

So is Cruz.

yeah, that’s a real smart move by the giants…send out the reigning cy young winner for the 9th inning after he’s already throw 106 pitches, so he can try and finish off a win against the last place team in the NL Central…

Lincecum is throwing heaters right down the plate, why not swing at that so you dont have to face his changeup
I know Moss swings at the first pitch a lot, but in that situation I dont mind it. Lincecum is trying to get ahead and then throw his change cuz he wants to get this game over with
I’d still take a pitch rather than get out on the first one. The guy is closing in on 110 pitches…you make him throw extra pitches.
I don't know
if Lincecum gets to 2 strikes, then you’re screwed. Moss knows that.
First pitch swinging isn’t ideal, but he almost took it yard there

I thought Pearce could be a decent option at first base, but he doesn’t have the height to get to a lot of these throws.
by Gorkys n' Beans on Jul 28, 2009 12:28 AM EDT reply actions
I wouldn’t just dump Steve, but I do think him and Jones should be switched and I am not sure he is an everyday player.
In the “why the hell not” file, I would train Pearce at second. It couldn’t hurt. He seems to have good movement, just not a big enough target for 1B. Otherwise, I don’t see where else he could fit on the diamond for us.

but very few of us thought that Pearce would become the full-time replacement.

I didn't really mind Mario before
afterwards, I was thinking Jones.
Though, while I was sick of Mario’s bat and wanted it gone, I was pretty sure there would be issues afterwards. I just felt that trading him for some prospects was the best thing for the team… though I didn’t foresee his bad season so far.

I thought Pearce would replace him, but I probably underestimated the height thing. I have a hard time seeing now how that won’t be a huge problem going forward. I like Pearce’s bat, though.
by Gorkys n' Beans on Jul 28, 2009 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Height isn't an issue at first base...
if you have infielders that can throw halfway decent. Steve Garvey was no taller than Pearce (5’10")…and Pete Rose was an entire inch taller…and they played 1B for a LONG time.
If it wasn’t an issue, there would be more sub 6’1’’ players there besides Pearce and Prince Fielder.
by Gorkys n' Beans on Jul 28, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
There were at least two throws a taller guy could have gotten easily last night; one pulled Pearce off the bag, another almost did. It’s not like Wilson or LaRoche have bad arms here, either.
