Wilson traded to Seattle

Dejan is reporting that Jack Wilson has been traded to Seattle: http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/archive/2009/07/29/pirates-trade-to.aspx

No word on the return, but Dejan said details will follow. The Mariners have a few decent prospects in their system, including some low-level players, so it will be interesting to see what we get back.

I have to assume that Sanchez is close behind, with San Francisco as the most logical destination.

UPDATE: On Twitter, Dejan is reporting that its Jack Wilson and Ian Snell for Jeff Clement, Ronny Cedeno, Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock.

I’m not sure how this makes sense for Seattle, unless they plan to flip Wilson as part of another deal. I thought they were in “sell” mode.

I suppose Jeff Clement is too much to ask for in return?

Well

Obviously, losing Snell could turn out to be a disaster, but this looks like a great deal for the Bucs on its face…

Pribanic and Lorin

Were the M’s 3rd and 5th round selections last year and both look to be doing well in Low A ball.

i m thrilled

ronny cedeno’s stats this year looks like he will be worse than wilson with the bat, and most people are likely to be worse in the field.

It’s the 3 pitchers though (along with Clement) that excite me. It seems to be a good high-upside trade. The only thing that could cause it to blow up would be Ian Snell pitching like an All-Star- I wouldn’t bet on it, though.

I m meh about Wilson for Cedeno, though we clearly have the worse side of that.

Sooo

Clement replaces Pearce right away?

A year ago he was the M’s no.1 prospect so that’s good. If one of the 3 pitchers can be a middle of the rotation guy down the road this is a plus. I will miss Wilson though, he was my favorite Pirate for the last 8 or 9 years.

A little on hearsay on two the the pitchers

Pribanic and Lorin. Unfortunately I didn’t see these two in person but I saw their team (Clinto Lumberkings) in the lone series between then and the Dayton Dragons. The Lumberkings struggled giving up 35 hits in the 3 game series (yet the took 2 of 3). I remember hearing that Dayton was fortunate to not have to face their best two picthers.

Imagine that, I would have seen them first hand but the series fell right in the middle of them in their rotation. From what I understand besides Kasparek they were the best pitching prospects they had at lower A, but they have a problem with serving up gopher balls sometimes.

Another cog in the wheel of our youth movement.

i like this deal

12:28pm: Kovacevic hears that the Pirates are contributing a “significant amount” of cash in the deal.

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo calls it a “pretty good haul” for the Pirates and Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus says it’s the best deal the Pirates have made yet.

…LET THE NEW ERA BEGIN
