Dealing With the Yinzers

I run a bar/restaurant about 40 mintues north of the city.  Because of my job, I am in constant face-to-face contact with an ever-growing number of Yinzers.  I have to listen to unemployed drunks talk day in and day out about how cheap Bob Nutting is.  I have to hear 20 times a day how (insert any player we traded in the last 2 years here) is a sure-fire hall of famer and (insert who we got in return if they're capable of remembering here) is a bum.  Tonight I had a guy tell me the Steve Pearce is a "bum" because "that was only his first home run of the season." That was the last straw.  I'm sick and tired of listening to these idiots and their unintelligent arguments.

Here is how a typical conversation with these Yinzers goes:

Yinzer: "The pirates traded away all their good players."

Me: "Those players weren't really all that good and most of them were set to become free agents so we would lose them anyways and get nothing in return."

Yinzer: (Notice they never directly respond to my arguments) "It's all about money, they don't care about winning."

Me: "If it was all about money, they wouldn't have invested in their Dominican Facility, they wouldn't have signed Pedro Alvarez, and they wouldn't have sent money in the Laroche and Wilson-Snell trades."

Yinzer: (Still not acknowledging any of my arguments) "They're just a farm system for the Yankees."

Me: "Almost everyone they've traded has fallen off drastically after being traded or has no track record to suggest he can keep up his level of play."

Yinzer: "We could have a good team if they just kept all those guys."

Me: "No, they were a bad team when they had all those guys."

Yinzer: "They traded away all their good players."

Me: "Those players weren't really all that good and most of them were set to become free agents so we would lose them anyways and get nothing in return."

Notice at this point we've come full circle back to the top of the conversation.  I generally go through this cycle about 3 or 4 times with a given Yinzer while they throw back 3-4 IC Light Drafts and then mumble something about J & L closing on their way out the door. (That was like 25 year ago! Move on!)

So my question is this, how does everyone else go about dealing with these types of people? I can't just ignore them like I'd like to because they are my customers, but I don't know that there's any way to deal with people who are unable to look at the situation rationally. Any thoughts?

I constantly have the same conversations you do

Then I give up, call them an idiot, and walk away.

There is no way

to talk to convince thickheaded yinzers. Just nod and make a sarcastic comment if/when you choose to do so

agree with them

work them up so they keep on eating/drinking and getting worked up…

maybe, on their way out, give them a post-it with bucsdugout.com and ask them to visit it for an alternate point of view!

Get them to talk about the Steelers.

I personally don’t really care about the Steelers but it’s better for my blood pressure than hearing them badmouth the Pirates and give the same arguments as Ed Bouchette.

I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

I forgot to inculde....

They also downright refuse to recognize the distinction between FC and NH’s Pirates and the Cam Bonifay – Dave Littlefield Pirates.

Also, why is it such an issue for Bob Nutting to profit from the Pirates? No one seems to care how much Dan Rooney or Super Mario are making on their teams. Granted, they both won championships this year, but still. I’m not in business to lose money, how can I expect Bob Nutting to be?

Well

Its a bar right? My first recommendation is a beer or 2 from the tap to ease the sting. Might I recommend Blue Moon? You can throw every statistic in the book out (my usual stat is OPS since its easy to understand/explain), but it won’t make a difference to a thickheaded yinzer. Just smile and nod, praying they get drunk enough to leave a huge tip. What restaurant do you run?

Jesus H.

From tonight’s AP game story:

“With several of their favorite players having been traded this season,
Pittsburgh fans gave warmer applause each time the popular Morgan was announced
than for anyone on the Pirates.”

Can you blame them though?

I mean, Nyjer is better than Albert Pujols, after all…

Ask Sean Burnett

I’m sure he’d be more than happy to explain his remarks

Yinzers have no answer for the fact that we are paying the rest of Jack Wilson and Ian Snell’s salaries just to get rid of them. It just doesn’t compute.

More than anything, I think a lot of Pirate fans are being brainwashed by the media. For example, when the New York Times repeatedly claims there are WMDs in Iraq, most people believed it (at least in the beginning). Similarly, when everyone at the Post-Gazette cries “salary dump” for every single move the Bucs make the past 2 years, many of the sheep take it to heart.

You know, I never bought into all that salary dump stuff. But then I read today that they let Steve Smith go for cash considerations. Cheap bastards.

Ignore it man

these types of “fans” get under my skin too but theres nothing you can do. its the same when you go to a steeler game and after one interception the asshole behind you (who is in full steeler outfit) screams for ben to be benched because hes single handedly killing the team. or my personal favorite, the pens fan who constantly yells for them to “shoot the puck” on every possession or “hit somebody” when on defense. its moronic, its ridiculous, and it absolutely shows that this person knows nothing about sports, but they are out there my friend. and as you seem to have plenty of experience with these types you must know – you cant argue with stupid people. no facts or stats will ever change their trollish minds.

by naynaynay1 on Jul 31, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Chester had it right.

Just get them to talk about the Steelers or Penguins instead.

Pittsburgh gets credit for having knowledgeable fans, but the fact is that nobody in that city knows anything about sports. This is the same short-sighted fanbase that throught at various points that Ben Roethlisberger should have been benched for Charlie Batch and/or Byron Leftwich.

Just because we have good teams doesn’t mean we have smart fans.

Somewhat related

From today

Radio caller: This is all a ploy by the Nuttings to pocket money. I mean why else would they trade Nyjer Morgan?

Me: AHHHHH!!!

Radio Host: I agree. I mean it’s going to be really annoying to see Nyjer hit .300 for the next 5 years

Me: AHHHH!!! (click) Whew, that’s better

And Later

Normally sane relative of mine: I think they’re just doing this so they can move the team like in “Major League”.

Me: (blink) Really? So basically the same owners built PNC Park just to move the team?

Normally sane relative of mine: They didn’t pay for PNC, the taxpayers did.

The Yinzers have forever convinced themselves that the Pirates dealt Hanley Ramirez and Tim Lincecum to Seattle, Chase Utley to the Giants, and Jon Papelbon/Zack Greinke to the Cubs. There’s really no reversing this mindset in 99% of cases.

You forgot the Albert Puljos, and Mariano Rivera to Washington and the Ryan Howard to Boston deals

Ohh...

We could have had Ryan Howard…

by ryebr3ad on Aug 1, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeaaa

and it’s all Neil Huntingtons fault that Dave Littlefield didnt accept that trade.

by BuccoBrigade on Aug 1, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And Nutting’s. He nixed the trade because Howard was making . . . uh . . . the minimum salary.

Sort of the same....

Last summer, I had a Steeler fan I talked to at a store here in Iowa tell me “The Steelers aren’t going to win another Super Bowl” because Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger just aren’t the right guys to do it and that they’ll always be a 12-4 or 11-5 team that just won’t win big games. He based that entirely on the playoff game they lost. I bet he’s still complaining.

Personally, I don’t pay much attention to the Steelers before the first week of the season. I don’t even know who they drafted yet. I think it’s mostly that I trust the Steelers completely to do the right thing because they’ve earned that trust. The Pirates haven’t yet. Sorry to say it, but I still don’t trust them. Probably won’t until they win as much as the Steelers and Penguins. I’m sure if I didn’t pay attention at all to the Pirates, I’d be just as angry as any yinzer fan out there complaining about the trades this week.

They should quit acting like fans

if they don’t want to pay attention.

if you dont mind me asking....

Where is this bar/restaurante located? Maybe we can have a “gathering” of knowledgable Pirate fans one day.

by BuccoBrigade on Aug 1, 2009 10:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bowser's Restaurant

It’s in Center Twp. (Monaca Mailing Address) Right off the Monaca exit on 60 near the Beaver Valley Mall.

(Charlie, I’m not trying to advertise, but two people had asked. I hope that is ok.)

by morpkingjoshh on Aug 1, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well if im ever in the area, i’ll be sure to stop in and we can have an educated discussion on the Pirates.

by BuccoBrigade on Aug 1, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude..

I go there occasionally (not one of the Yinzers BTW). Most of the Yinzers who frequent your establishment probably come there from Horsehead Corp…..

but Freddie, Jack and Jason Bay were All-Stars!!!!!!!

Seriously, they have to be awesome, and we traded them for Minor Leaguers???

It’s amazing how people judge these transactions.

People don’t pay attention to the game. They just read the updates in the newspaper and see the sports segment on TV. They then call in to sports talk radio and all the idiots who pay lip-service attention to baseball trade wisdom like “It’s a salary dump again.” And they are all brilliant and know what they are talking about.

I deal with mine on-line, so I send them links to the other teams fans freaking out about how they got robbed. that usually shuts them up or gets the “they’ll just trade them when they get good so it doesn’t matter.” Then I point out that that is what the Indians (the team they threaten to root for, because they “do it right”) do every year, and remind them the Indians traded Manny Ramirez and still won.

Then they are left with the “our guys are worse though, they’ll screw it up.” Even if you point out NH was doing it in Cleveland.

Gah.
