Losing Pirate Triumverate?

All indications seem to point to Jack, Adam, and Freddie all being traded to avoid having to re-sign them at salaries that in total could approach almost one-half of the allotted dollars for the entire payroll.  If that's true then I suppose we have to let them go but then what would that leave us?  My hard drive isn't big enough to list all of the unproven young talent and the many permutations of roster required to give each of them a chance to play.  Given that scenario, wouldn't it make more sense for NH to try to deal them for someone who actually has some experience and whose talent is somewhat predictable?  Do we really want a roster of 40 players none of whom is the least predictable as far as production from which to choose?  If that isn't possible I would want at the very least a promise from management that they will use all of the salary saved to be given to extremely high prospects to sign...and that has to be on top of what management was already budgeted to spend.  I don't want the partners to pocket the salary savings and pass it along to the shareholders in the form of a tax-free distribution of earnings.

Agree Somewhat

I agree with you on the salaries or the money, I don’t want it put into Nuttings pockets, whether its saved for future salaries or on more latin signings, whatever, just don’t keep it for himself. As far as trading, they should be traded for the best players they can get no matter their level. If the best player is a 19 yr old who we won’t see for 5 years or a 25 yr old ready to play right now, get the best players. I could care less who we start until we have a legitimate prospect to be the everyday player. I’d rather lose 130 games with players that aren’t major leaguers and have top notch prospects in the system who will contribute to a winner in the future than lose 95 games with marginal talent and no talent to turn to in the future. Sometimes playing guys early works out too, the Marlins have done this everytime they rebuild, Hanley went straight to the majors from AA, Uggla was a rule 5 who nobody thought had the talent to be a major leaguer, and countless others. Just trade for the best players whether they are 5 years away or ready to play right now, and keep the money saved on salaries in the organization in some capacity, not in Nuttings pockets.

"experience ... predictable ..."

But we’re kinda doing that. Ohlendorf and Morton pretty much went straight into the rotation, and I think we’re getting what we expected to be getting. Both might even be better than we could have expected. They didn’t get much experience because they were stuck behind superior talent (in the eyes of their teams, anyway) and thus were available on the cheap. Good for us. So cool your jets on the hitters, they’ll come.

Just thinking...

if we trade Freddy and not Jack. Jack is going to be pissed and go on a rampage around the clubhouse.

Jack...

has been whining and faking injuries before the traded deadline for years. Can it really get any worse? He still gets paid to play the game.

The Point Wouldn't Be To Save Salary

The point would be that they’re all too old to be a part of the next winning team. It’s better to trade them now for players who might be apart of the next winning team. The Pirates aren’t going to be good next year, so it does no good to hold onto them for one more year.

There are two states that a baseball team should be in: ready to win the World Series now, or building to win the World Series later. There’s no sense in trying to turn a 70-win team into an 80-win team with spare parts and glue. “If you can’t win 90, you might as well lose 90.”

Well Jack has been amenable to doing another long term contract i think. and the PBC and Jack have mentioned it.

One of the few things i’m not sold on…is how we’re going to replace him. I think Jack is an above average SS defensively. Now offensively he’s never been anything great, but when he was out for the injury. It was sorely noticeable that he takes away alot of hits that other SS might let go by. But if we get some decent prospects for him then i guess i could live with that.

As for Freddy Sanchez, most likely i see him being traded especially with the decent doubles power and contact hitting he has been showing this year again after last year’s injury plagued season. I don’t see the PBC extending his contract. Again, good prospects for this trade won’t bother me.

Adam LaRoche i could care less about. He’s a good field in some respects at 1B, but his hitting sometimes frustrates me. and along with his normal early season struggles to me he’s just an average 1B with a good glove. If we get lucky we get a bench 1B or someone who strikes out alot too lol.

I Don't Think That Replacing Jack Now Matters

The Pirates are not gonna win any trophies this year or the next, so replacing Jack is a long-term problem, not a short-term problem. If the Pirates trade Jack and get a good return, I’m completely happy if they field $random_replacement_shortstop for the next two years.

Haha…I really don’t think I could watch any more games if Bixler came up and was our everyday SS when/if Jack gets traded. It would be torture.

Yes, It Would

But, and I know I keep quoting this one, but “If you can’t win 90 games, you might as well lose 90.” There’s more value in finishing in last place then there is in being mediocre.

Why stop at 90...

why don’t we lose 100 and get the number 1 pick in next years draft. Bryce Harper would fit perfectly with us.

PHP is worse than Perl!

Actually, I’m biased: my main task at my internship involved Perl scripts. But I’ve grown to love to hate them…

It does matter - here's why

Huntington knows that good defense is essential to making his pitchers look attractive to other organizations. If he wanted to get good value from trading any of the current pitchers like Snell, Grabow, Duke, etc. he needs to make sure their ERA’s look good to other GMs. For example, he could never have traded Sean Burnett for Hanrahan if Jack Wilson wasn’t playing shortstop this year.

positive thoughts

EVERY DAY I AM GOING TO SEND POSITIVE THOUGHTS TO THE PIRATES, TOMORROW THE PIRATES WILL WIN

You seem to be suggesting in the first part of your post that

if we do trade Andy, Jack and Freddy that it would be best if we do so for major-league ready talent only; at least that’s what I think you mean by “somewhat experienced”. That was the Dave Littlefield approach to trading and the problem with it is that teams that want to make a run usually can’t afford to part with a good major-league-ready player; if they did that they would ordinarily be just addressing one weakness be creating another. Accordingly, it makes more sense for rebuilding teams like the Pirates to trade their veterans for minor-league talent since they can acquire players with far more upside that way.

Be patient. The next couple of years are likely to be difficult but the Pirates are headed in the right dircetion under current management.

When I said “somewhat experienced” I didn’t mean washed up. I’m concerned that NH will trade our established talent for “prospects” none of who may work out. If we’re going to trade starting talent I’d like to be assured that a few of the players we receive in return will be capable of starting. Having “potential” is not enough if they have never proven themselves or we could be left with 40 players who can only compete at the AAA level. Just as an example: I hope we don’t trade our Sanchez for SF’s Sanchez. I would hope we could do better.

by Illinois Pirate Fan on Jul 5, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed: I wouldn't like to see a

Sanchez for Sanchez deal either. But if NH does that deal I’d be confident that he knows something that we don’t.

Where will the money come from in 3 years?

I am really Stupid. Many here will agree to that. I still don’t understand where the money or the decision to spend the money will come from in 3 years. Won’t the prospects of today be approaching payday by then. If we have prospects BETTER than Sanchez, Mclouth, and Wilson, won’t they want paid 3 years from now. I see how this could work, just no proof the Pirates will EVER pay to keep good players. A stud player has to play until his 3 year contract expires, but free agent market takes over and we all say they are too high priced to stay in Pittsburgh. “Round and Round we go”

by huntingteacher on Jul 5, 2009 11:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It could come from the money saved

today by not paying these players now, but one can understand your suspicions that it won’t be. Maybe it would help if you reflected on what our pitching would be like right now if NH hadn’t made the trades he made. We might all be calling for Matt Morris to return from retirement.

by WestCoastBuc on Jul 5, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Funny

that anyone questions the Pirates’ commitment to spending money. We laid out what, close to $7 mil for a worthless year of Jeromy Burnitz? And $4 mil for a useless Joe Randa? And by all accounts the Giants were stunned that we didn’t ask them to pick up a chunk of Matt Morris’ salary, we happily took on the whole thing. That ended up costing what, something like $13 mil? And we popped for a $6.3 mil bonus for Pedro Alvarez, and we ponied up something like $4 mil to build the Dominican academy.

Exactly how much money do you want them to spend before you’ll acknowledge that “where’s the money going to come from in three years?” is among the least of our problems right now?
