Bucs Make Moves
Not surprisingly, the Pirates made some roster moves after today's 5-0 loss. The Steves (Jackson and Pearce) got optioned to Indy, while Donnie Veal got activated from the DL and recalled from his rehab stint . The Bucs had to make the Veal move because his rehab stint had expired and Jackson is as good a candidate as any to send down. He'll be back up Sept. 1 if not sooner, and I think management is comfortable knowing what he does and does not bring to the table.
Pearce wasn't seeing any playing time, so his demotion is not surprising. However, it is interesting that the move was made now without any corresponding roster move at the moment. The Pirates have said they will make another move before Friday's game. While I don't think this is the end of the line for Pearce, he certainly doesn't seem to be in management's long term plans.
Jeff Salazar stays up as a bench guy for the time being. It will be interesting to see if Friday's move is reinstating Ryan Doumit to the active roster, which appears most likely.

Don't know why PBC would keep Salazar over Pearce?
I guess Salazar is Cutch’s backup?
Also I don’t know why the PBC would need 3 catchers if Doumit is going to be activated for Friday. And I don’t know what the hurry is — if you just go by BA Doumit is having some problems with the bat.
I guess we’ll hear the old “it’s better for Pearce to be playing regularly” thing from management.
It’s nice though that Jackson and Pearce have someone to sit with on the bus ride back to Indianapolis. :)

Well, Salazar can back up in CF.
And Pearce is really just a 1B. So if they want more positional versatility from the bench, it makes sense.

Ugh.
Salazar and McCutchen are the only players able to play CF, so that probably kept him around until Milledge. Still it’s frustrating as a Pearce fan. We’re always reminded that Moss is not getting enough opportunities (which I agree for the most part) , but compared to Pearce’s latest cup of coffee Moss has been playing everyday for 5 years.

But that's silly
We’re always reminded that Moss is not getting enough opportunities (which I agree for the most part)
It’s true that people always say this, but I have no idea why. He’s a rookie who hasn’t hit especially well, yet he’s started 53 of 82 games – about 2/3. When he was hitting decently, he was starting every day, but in his deeper funks, JR will sit him a couple days. This isn’t a conspiracy – it’s how younger players are treated, always and everywhere.
Nobody thinks that Aramis benefitted from being run out there every day when he was brought up too early – not only did it waste a year of contract control, but it also stunted his development by pretty much that same year. Granted, Moss is older, but he’s also manifestly less talented. Nonetheless, Moss is the default RF for this team; when he slumps, he rests, which is how it should be. There’s no conspiracy to keep him from getting chances.

You can't sit your way out of a slump.
If anything, sitting makes it harder.

I think that they are just waiting to see how Doumit performs...
tonight and tomorrow. I don’t think that they will keep 3 catchers very long. I’d expect another move shortly after the All Star Break…involving a catcher on the Pirates side…and an IF on the Indy side…probably Cruz.

This is a surprise...
NOT!! Indy getting no hit through 6 innings. Doumit 0-3.
Bryan Morris got lit up again, 3 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 HR, ERA now 5,88.
by Thunder on Jul 8, 2009 8:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Morris' numbers...
do not mean anyting this year. We just need him to get his innings and get through the season without any complications. If he doesn’t improve next year then it is time to worry.

Morris will be given a chance in Altoona next spring
as will probably Locke
It will be a boom or bust year for those two in 2010

I Guess If We Did Things Your Way
We’d hold onto everybody until they were 29, and then give them two full years in the majors just to make sure we never gave up on a guy too soon.

If Locke and Morris are still in Single-A at 24, then yeah, you can start talking boom or bust. But it’s a bit premature to be saying it’s boom or bust at 21 (going on 22, whatever). I know you weren’t the one that said that so I’m not talking directly to you, but I’m just sayin’…

Count the years
First of all, Morris is already 22. Locke is 21, will be 22 in Nov. So:
Locke Morris
2010 AA 22 23
2011 AAA 23 24
2012 MLB 24 25
That’s fine for both of them, even if they don’t come north with the Bucs in 2012. But, especially for Morris, if 2010 becomes another lost year – if 2011 sees him in Altoona again – suddenly, a lot less prospect-y. Also, for the Pirates’ benefit, they need arms in 2012 to replace the exodus of Maholm and Duke (I guess they’re going to keep Gorzo down in Indy long enough to steal another year of control, which is shitty, except it’s kind of payback for the lost year Gorzo gave them in ’08).

Geez. It would be nice for Doumit to get at least one hit before he comes back to the big club. I know he’ll hit with the Pirates, but this is a little concerning.

What is NH waiting for with Snell?
You can’t tell me that those last 2 efforts, i know , in AAA, but he has shown major league talent, and apparently is healthy, and hates his current coaches at the major league level.
Throw in a fringe minor leaguer, or a useless player that is a fringe major leaguer(Pearce and or Moss would work), and acquire a capable ss/2b that can play RIGHT NOW, not in 2011 or 12.
There just has to be 1 gm that has a team in the playoff hunt, that is desperate for a SP, without ransoming the entire farm system.
One of these teams would bite,i really gotta believe that.
I really wished that NH would have dealt him before his next start(thursday, i think).
Snell can’t pitch 3 strong games in a row, can he?
If so, that should be the final game he pitches as a member of the Pirates organization.
If he get’s lit up, than they are back to square 1 in trying to dump this guy for a useful return.
by tom p on Jul 9, 2009 1:48 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Sure, he'll do well.
He’s pissed off, and he’s a ML-quality player pitching against AAA players. It’s a huge mismatch.

If we packaged Snell and Sanchez together, we could get 2-3 top prospects from the Rockies, I would think.
by mspirate on Jul 9, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that Snell would make the deal less attractive to the Rockies, not more.
by Androgen Jar Jimmy on Jul 9, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rockies like Snell.
This is a bad time to try and flip him for value, though.

Oh Snap
This is a Jim Tracy thing. Isn’t it?
by Androgen Jar Jimmy on Jul 9, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Somewhat.
Tracy certainly likes Ian. They tried to trade for him last year as well, though, so I don’t think it’s all Tracy.

If They Really Want Him
Then they can have him.
by Androgen Jar Jimmy on Jul 9, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Snell might be less attractive to other teams, but the Rockies like him. That’s why I think we could get 2-3 good prospects for a Snell/Sanchez package.

Wondering
If a surprise may be in store…
If Doumit is not called up it has to be either Milledge, Cruz, Bixler, or someone we don’t know about who is a right handed batter. I would think it would need to be someone with a little pop from the right side…

I think we will know within a few hours of the end of the Indianapolis game this afternoon.
Game is 1205 pm EDT…so by suppertime…I suspect the move will be announced.

Capps for Hermida?
Yeah, keep dreaming, Florida.

Just what we need
more OF help! No thanks. I do like Florida as a trading partner though. They typically have a loaded minor league system. My concern would be that since they are so good at scouting, drafting and developing, they would trade us the prospect on double secret probation no matter his production.
by vanslyke on Jul 9, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe not in this case...
I don’t see any middle infield prospects at the middle or upper levels of their system. Just corners and pitchers.
by Thunder on Jul 9, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly. We don’t need any more outfielders. The perfect trade would be Capps for Gaby Sanchez, the Marlins’ Triple-A 1B. They need relief help. We need an answer at 1B after LaRoche (as well as depth at the position anyway).Sanchez is hitting .299 with 8 HR and 32 RBI in 51 games in Triple-A New Orleans, and he was very close to making the Marlins big league team out of spring training.

Why is Brad Lincoln listed on Lynchburg’s roster?
charity standing orders
by BadMaafala on Jul 9, 2009 10:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
because...
he won’t be pitching in a game for Indy until at least next Thursday. He will be pitching in the Futures game on Sunday. No need for Indy to be more shorthanded than it already is. They activated Slocum from the DL. Sure there will be a roster move for Indy at the end of next week to bring him back.

If I were in Pearce's shoes...
I think I’d be requesting a trade about now. Doesn’t appear as though he’ll ever get a legit shot with the Pirates.

Some good news down on the farm...
Doumit has finally broken out. He went 2-for-4 today for Indy. At Altoona, Pedro went 2-for-3 with no K’s and a walk. Gorkys Hernandez hit his second HR with the Curve.
