Pirates to Recall Luis Cruz

I haven't seen a formal report yet, but the Pirates' Facebook page says the Bucs will recall Luis Cruz to fill Steve Pearce's roster spot. If true, this means that neither Ryan Doumit or Freddy Sanchez are ready to come back, at least not right away. Cruz hit .253/.274/.358 at Indianapolis, confirming what we already knew, which is that he can't hit at all. But I assume that, if true, this is just a short-term fix until someone gets healthy, and Cruz won't get more than a handful of at bats anyway. I doubt this has anything to do with the Sanchez trade rumors, although I suppose anything's possible.

I'm not sure why this hasn't been reported anywhere besides Facebook yet, so take it with a grain of salt until you see it confirmed.

UPDATE: Scott McCauley has it too.

UPDATE: Now McCauley says it's likely that Doumit will rejoin the Pirates tomorrow. Let's see how this plays out.

UPDATE: It's Cruz. Doumit won't be back until after the All-Star break.

And he also says that Doumit’s rehab assignment is done and he will be joining the Pirates.

Gorilla is right -- Need to update your headline Charlie

McCauley’s totally backed off the Cruz rumor.

At 7:45 EDT he posted:

After the game Ryan Doumit met with Bucs GM Neal Huntington and it was decided that his rehab assignment is finished. Doumit didn’t make the trip to Toledo and my best guess is he will be joining the Pirates tomorrow in Philly. I’m a little surprised his rehab stint is up, but personally I think it’s for the better. He didn’t want to be here and it was obvious to see by his demeanor and at bats.

Cruz may have to unpack his bags.

P.S. McCauley also says he expects a Lastings Milledge sighting for the Indians tomorrow in Toledo.

Heh

FWIW, Hanrahan picked up a win today without throwing a pitch. Nats beat Houston in completion of suspended game. Nyjer scored the winning run.

Oh hell

didn’t see zogger had this already.

Sounds kind of odd. DK was emphatic today in his chat that Doumit was NOT going to be the player joining the Pirates on Friday. But I’m glad Lastings will finally be joining the Triple-A team. I may be wrong, but I think he is with the big club by the end of the month.

If he produces, I doubt he stays with the AAA club long at all. He’s proven last year that he’s a Major League ready player. I’ll need to watch him live in Indy while I still can.

I’ve decided to drive up to Philly for the Sat. and Sun. games. I don’t have tickets in hand, but my friend in Philadelphia is working on it, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll find a way.

If all fails, at least I’ll get a cheesesteak, I suppose.

Can you not just buy some tickets online?

Didn't look online

but the tickets are now in my control, or I guess, my uncle’s.

I’m in the bleachers on Saturday and down the left field line on Sunday.

Of course, I still have to pay for them, but at least I’ll go with assurance I can get in.

The Phils

routinely sell out. This year, they’ve only had about 12 games that haven’t sold out. It’s insane. I wanted to grab tix for one of the games this weekend, but it ain’t gonna happen…

I'm droppin' flava, my behavior is hereditary--but my technique is very necessary.

I'm guessing that we will have a fairly good idea in an hour...

on Cruz…when the PG midnight stuff runs. I’m betting that nothing definite on Doumit gets announced until late morning tomorrow….but my guess is that he is on the roster by 705 pm EDT on Friday.

Not that anyone cares, but...

i dropped Doumit from my fantasy team. I held on to him this long to see if my other catching options Sandoval and Inge would drop down to earth, but they haven’t yet. I’ll take my chances that Ryan won’t be fully recovered until spring training next year.

From Dejan's notebook...

I definitely did not see any indication that Doumit has been ruled out of this weekend’s Philly series. If it was stated that his rehab was over…I can’t see them NOT activating him. If they were going to send him to Lynchburg, WV, SC or Bradenton…that would be something else entirely…and they wouldn’t have said that his rehab was over.

Frankly…I think Cruz definitely gets activated unless Freddy is 100%, and he may still get activated then. If Doumit gets activated…either Diaz goes down…or a pitcher. Why a pitcher?? There are only 3 games between now and next Friday. The Pirates can set up their rotation however they want for the 2nd half. I wouldn’t be absolutely shocked to see Morton or a starter with options sent to…say…Altoona…for one start…as a 4th or 5th starter would not be needed until around July 20th.
