no break tonight for the Bucos

once again they are facing a talented pitcher. This time the Rockies top pitching prospect Chacin (The ’08 Minor League Pitcher of The Year) This season he has worked five innings of relief, recording 9K , 3 BB, 2 H, 1 ER

So it's a minor league pitcher (who normally do well against the Bucs)

but it’s a good pitcher (who have been known to not do as well against the Bucs). I’m still going to bet on the offense not showing up

Kevin Youkilis

just flat out charged Rick Porcello. Threw his helmet and everything.

hit where?

close to the head?

somehow dont see why it would be intentional that early in the game, but did it look like it?

by BurgherKing on Aug 11, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Cabrera was hit in the hand first

Followed by V-Mart getting brushed back. But then, Cabrera had to leave the game after trying to hit his next time up. That was followed by Youk getting hit in the back. Porcello seemed to be kinda disgusted about hitting Youk and was shocked when he turned and saw a POed Youk charging right at him. He started backing away (I would too if I were him, Youk is kinda big and Porcello is a tiny kid) and Youk took off his helmet threw it at him and then grabbed hold of Porcello. Porcello then used Youk’s momentum and kinda tackled him to the ground followed by other players piling on. It was interesting.
Oh, Francona then went on to get tossed later in the game when arguing a call at second on a stolen base attempt. And this all happened in 2 innings.

Youkilis also got hit by a pitch last night…so there may be more history between these two teams than we are seeing from a distance.

But most of our guys are seeing pitchers for the first time, anyway, because we’re so young. I don’t think too many of our guys had faced Chris Carpenter. I think it’s going to be like any other game: Try to have a good approach and good at-bats against him.”

Going back to the Pearce AB

Wehner complained about Pearce not trying to hit the ball to the right side with Doumit at 2nd.

Am I the only one that thinks the idea of the #5 hitter trying to move a runner in a scoreless game at Coors is kinda silly?

Was wondering that myself.

by shayborg on Aug 11, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

When struggling to score

you shouldn’t try to pull everything. But he shouldn’t also try to hit everything the other way. But I guess that can be used in any situation.

by JR89 on Aug 11, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoa. According to Greg Brown on the broadcast, when a pitched ball hits a player and he is not entitled to first base (i.e. he didn’t try to avoid it, or he swung at it), the ball is dead. So Doumit’s run shouldn’t have counted. Uh, whoops.

by shayborg on Aug 11, 2009 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

Unless the Ump thought...

…that the ball hit in the dirt, then bounced into DY. That might not be a dead ball since it touched the ground first. Of course, the ump was still wrong, but he didn’t have 5 angles of HVTV with super slow-mo.

by Slick1 on Aug 11, 2009 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

There's certainly some thought...

that Lincoln’s recent struggles have as much to do with his change in workload from last year as anything else. If he throws 100 pitches in a game the rest of the season…I will be shocked.

He pitched 103 innings last year…already up to 115 this year…figure MAYBE 25 innings the rest of the year.

Ohlendorf

Like clockwork, third time through the lineup…he’s at 94 pitches and they are hammering him.

On a more amusing note, was watching the Braves-Nationals telecast here in DC, and Rob Dibble said Nyjer Morgan is the best center fielder in the league, and that Washington needs to keep him because he’s so great in the clubhouse and on the team plane, that the Pirates were taken. There is no monopoly on idiocy.

Please get Ohlendorf out of this game.
