no break tonight for the Bucos
once again they are facing a talented pitcher. This time the Rockies top pitching prospect Chacin (The ’08 Minor League Pitcher of The Year) This season he has worked five innings of relief, recording 9K , 3 BB, 2 H, 1 ER
So it's a minor league pitcher (who normally do well against the Bucs)
but it’s a good pitcher (who have been known to not do as well against the Bucs). I’m still going to bet on the offense not showing up

Kevin Youkilis
just flat out charged Rick Porcello. Threw his helmet and everything.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
And Bay
just hit a 3-run home run.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
hit where?
close to the head?
somehow dont see why it would be intentional that early in the game, but did it look like it?
Cabrera was hit in the hand first
Followed by V-Mart getting brushed back. But then, Cabrera had to leave the game after trying to hit his next time up. That was followed by Youk getting hit in the back. Porcello seemed to be kinda disgusted about hitting Youk and was shocked when he turned and saw a POed Youk charging right at him. He started backing away (I would too if I were him, Youk is kinda big and Porcello is a tiny kid) and Youk took off his helmet threw it at him and then grabbed hold of Porcello. Porcello then used Youk’s momentum and kinda tackled him to the ground followed by other players piling on. It was interesting.
Oh, Francona then went on to get tossed later in the game when arguing a call at second on a stolen base attempt. And this all happened in 2 innings.

Youkilis also got hit by a pitch last night…so there may be more history between these two teams than we are seeing from a distance.
Didn't know that
The rest of the series will be interesting.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
And now...
the replacement for Youkilis…Mike Lowell…has just gone deep. Maybe they should have left Youk alone ;)
It must be nice
to be able to bring some like Lowell off the bench

6:15 p.m.: Russell, on the Pirates facing Chacin, a Class AA starter making his major league debut: “For some teams, it would be a little different. But most of our guys are seeing pitchers for the first time, anyway, because we’re so young. I don’t think too many of our guys had faced Chris Carpenter. I think it’s going to be like any other game: Try to have a good approach and good at-bats against him.”

Wild pitch
semi blocked by Doumit off to his right and he jumped up, picked it up, and threw the runner out.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Dumatrait...
…gave up four runs on four hits in the top of the first for Indy against Columbus, but settled down to allow only two more hits and no more runs over the next five innings. He finished with 4 K and 1 BB in six innings.
That is correct...
…it looks like the first batter reached on an error by Clement, and later on Tagg Bozied made an error allowing another run to score.
Promising recovery.
I watched the game and he was getting lit up in the 1st. He did settled down though which is promising. I’ll thing he’ll be our lone lefty in the pen when he comes off the DL.
Leadoff Double
for Doumit to RF

Doumit
risky, but heads up at least

Good job doumit moving to third after the throw

Doumit
Heads up again…nice
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Dy swung a pitch that hit him!
How often do you see that. And the runner scored because the ball got by the catcher. Weird play!
Definitely interesting
2 good choices by Doumit
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
What's the rule for that?
If it hits the batter but he swung at it, is it a dead ball? I guess it’s not
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Going back to the Pearce AB
Wehner complained about Pearce not trying to hit the ball to the right side with Doumit at 2nd.
Am I the only one that thinks the idea of the #5 hitter trying to move a runner in a scoreless game at Coors is kinda silly?
When struggling to score
you shouldn’t try to pull everything. But he shouldn’t also try to hit everything the other way. But I guess that can be used in any situation.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
I think there is a 100% chance...
that if Pearce goes the other way it would, or would not, have been a good decision.
I just think that
if a pitch is on the outside corner/half should be taken the other way. My opinion
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
alrighty
It is highly doubtful though that pearce can go the other way..or many major league hitters for that matter.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
DY should get an RBI!
He made contact . . . kinda.
Yeah yet Wehner apparently didn't approve
Steelers - Immaculate Reception. Penguins - Immaculate Rejection. Pirates......Immaculate Resurrection???
Interesting.
So our announcers are even worse than the talent on the field right now. Awesome! What a fricking ebarrassment to hear someone representing our org say something like that. He should be shit canned tomorrow.
I mean
they only pitched and hit really well. But they couldn’t field or base run well at all.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Of course, they won partly by getting Mientkiewicz and Cabrera to improve their defense
But that’s besides the point.
Ya
I was just mocking Wehner. Of course the 04 Red Sox would have never won without juicing.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Back to back 2 out walks
Steelers - Immaculate Reception. Penguins - Immaculate Rejection. Pirates......Immaculate Resurrection???
Pedro having a quiet night so far...
2-2 with a walk…now hitting .329 for the Curve. Curve up 8-0 in the 5th.
Apparently the run shouldn't have counted
Should have been a dead ball once it hit DY.
Thank you umpire
Steelers - Immaculate Reception. Penguins - Immaculate Rejection. Pirates......Immaculate Resurrection???
Whoa. According to Greg Brown on the broadcast, when a pitched ball hits a player and he is not entitled to first base (i.e. he didn’t try to avoid it, or he swung at it), the ball is dead. So Doumit’s run shouldn’t have counted. Uh, whoops.
Unless the Ump thought...
…that the ball hit in the dirt, then bounced into DY. That might not be a dead ball since it touched the ground first. Of course, the ump was still wrong, but he didn’t have 5 angles of HVTV with super slow-mo.
Hopefully...
Tulo got everything out of his system last night.
nope

Clement
0 for 3 with a strikeout and an error for dropping the ball at first base tonight.
The defense worries me, though. He’s said to be completely incompetent at all positions in the field, so every error is troubling to me.

I've watched every game since we acquired him...
and while he is no gold glover I’m confident he can be an average defensive player with regular playing time. He really hasn’t looked that bad.
I’d be lying if I said I’d seen him play, so I’m just making inferences based on what I read and then applying what I know about him to evaluate his performance, if you get what I’m saying.
I hope you’re right.

I get a ya...
and I hope I’m right too. I’m pretty sure if he doesn’t succeed it won’t be because of his glove at 1B.
he can't be worse
than Adam Dunn can he?

Do pitchers typically throw faster
in Coors? Thin air thing maybe. Or am I crazy?

He is smart
so i wouldn’t put it past him
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Me either...
he reportedly sacrificed some velo for control this year. Maybe is getting more confident with his recent success. I think he has something like a 2.74 ERA in the second half.
Hmm
maybe he can stick in the rotation. I’ve still be iffy about that aspect.
Show me a guy whos afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time. -Lou Brock
Same here...
I really pleased with his performance so far. I thought it was a given that he’d end up in the pen at some point.
You definitely feel the difference in
physical performance coming down from altitude – I’ve moved from higher to lower altitudes and gotten great runs in for the 1st week. But you usually suck wind going up.
Tulo has...
as many home runs this season as all of our traded infielders…combined (Freddy (6), Jack (4), Adam (12)) did when they left.
Ohlendorf
Did anyone else notice that the last few starts, Ohlendorf has been throwing faster? Tonight he hit 96 mph. I think he’s starting to come away from the sinker and is starting to throw his four seamer more. That’s my take on it at least.
Is it me . . .
or is Ohlendorf like the most blah player ever. He doesn’t do anything particularly well, and besides HR tendency, he doesn’t do anything particularly poorly. He’s just kinda there.
Pretty much
That’s not necessarily the worst thing from a #5 starter, though. Generally will keep you in ballgames.
Exactly
He’s just the kind of guy you love to have 2 or 3 of. You have to have one hell of a rotation for a guy like that not to be useful.

He’ll be in Indy to start the season
A Pirate in June.
BE PATIENT!
Don't have a problem with him starting next year in Indy.
There’s NO chance he will be in Pittsburgh before June. However…considering his success the last 6 weeks at Altoona…why not see how he does at Indy the last week or two of the season.
maybe if Indy was on a playoff run
not sure if they are……I remember they brought Cutch up a few yrs ago during the Curve’s playoff run but that was the last regime….I bet Pedro stays in Altoona for the rest of the year no matter hat.
no way
Pedro steps into AAA ahead of Walker! Yes, sarcasm
They've had a great night from the top of the order...

he's a solid changeup away
that’s the only thing holding him back
He's probably tired right now.
He’s thrown a lot of innings this year. I think he will do well next year and earn a call up around the trade deadline after we deal one of our starters.
There's certainly some thought...
that Lincoln’s recent struggles have as much to do with his change in workload from last year as anything else. If he throws 100 pitches in a game the rest of the season…I will be shocked.
He pitched 103 innings last year…already up to 115 this year…figure MAYBE 25 innings the rest of the year.
5 innings for the next 5 starts
unless he get’s rocked which unfornuately has become common.
Good points by all
I would’ve liked to see him as a Sept call up

Ohlendorf
Like clockwork, third time through the lineup…he’s at 94 pitches and they are hammering him.
On a more amusing note, was watching the Braves-Nationals telecast here in DC, and Rob Dibble said Nyjer Morgan is the best center fielder in the league, and that Washington needs to keep him because he’s so great in the clubhouse and on the team plane, that the Pirates were taken. There is no monopoly on idiocy.
Please get Ohlendorf out of this game.
