Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89

I like Luigi batting 2nd

He seems to be one of our more patient hitters, which should give Cutch more time out on the bases.

That’s not saying much, is it?

Next thing you know JR will give MVP a day off. Nah . . . couldn’t happen. :)

That’s the real reason they’re playing this game at 3:10. Don’t want to compete with a Steeler preseason game.

Or maybe

they just wanna give the PBC a chance to get to Wrigley for a game tomorrow afternoon?

There are 6 afternoon MLB games today, and several teams (Dodgers, for example) are enjoying a travel only day. They all can’t be scared of a couple NFL pre-games.

i did remember the pitchers could bunt- at least the ones who ve been around, duke, maholm

They've always been relatively consistent.

Course Duke can have a base hit with about the same consistency as bunting

by Thunder on Aug 13, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm thinking...

a Brewer is going to go after a pitcher later today. They’ve hit 5 HR against the Padres in 5 innings. I can’t imagine the Padres not going inside a few times in the next few innings. Fielder’s gone deep twice…Braun once and Mike Rivera twice.

Then again…even if a Brewer does charge the mound…we know he won’t get suspended anyway.

by Thunder on Aug 13, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

I'm hoping to heckle Fielder to the point where he yells at me when I go to the game next week

He did completely own Youk.

First of all, grow a pair Youk, don’t throw the helmet. Secondly, when you charge the pitcher, you shouldn’t get slammed like that

Who is Walk talking about with Florida?

No way in hell there’s a 73 point spread. Absolutely not

Why not???

Florida’s first game is against perennial powerhouse Charleston Southern.

by Thunder on Aug 13, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I know they would be playing a D1-AA team

but 73? I’ve never heard of something that absurd. Normally I see 42, 48, an even a rare close to 60. 73 is just saying we could care less how demoralized your teams going to be

Remember...

Florida tends NOT to call off the dogs against weaker competition. Especially if they are going to be considered for #1 this season. This game isn’t even being listed oddswise…that I’ve seen up to this point.

but not 3 weeks ahead of time. I would agree that a true line will be somewhere in the 40s…but Florida putting up 70+ points in that game would NOT surprise me.

Any delay much more than about 90 minutes would likely end up in the game being terminated. Last trip in on a getaway day.

although why he hurried the throw i dont know… probably because of the fumble

Sleeping Beauty — I likey!!

You know why LaRussa said he knew that the order for Capps to hit Pujols came from the PBC bench but not from the manager? He could hear JR snoring from the Cards dugout.

True but it starts to settle the team.

The pieces start to fit into place. Chemistry starts to be made. The outfield is set at that point and we get to see how they flow.

someone needs to take a trip to the Pirates bullpen at PNC…and put up a sign.

by Thunder on Aug 13, 2009 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

Maholm and Capps

What’s to make of these guys?

PM: Fifth consecutive start giving up over 4 ER, hasn’t had a quality start in about a month.

Capps: Although the BS against the cards was only his first in 15 straight attempts, he has an era hovering around 6.00 and his struggles are obvious.

What the hell’s going on? If we traded these guys a year ago we could’ve conceivably gotten a monster deal. Both are relatively young, and though I’m citing a small sample size, I think bigger problems may reside with both of them…

by jlk9697 on Aug 13, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

I question...

whether either of them has been totally healthy this season. We know that Capps had elbow issues early in the season…and there have been several reports of Maholm having troubles with his legs…knee or hamstring. I wouldn’t be absolutely shocked to see one or both shut down early.

by Thunder on Aug 13, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

generally our starters have been okay............

but it’s that our offense is so putrid that they nearly have to throw shutout’s daily.

by Krazybuc on Aug 13, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Have to disagree.

…Maholm, IMO, has been bad, especially with the contract extension and “#1 starter” billing, to have an ERA at about 5.00 with an above average defense for the greater part of this season, can’t blame that on the offense.

He has also gotten decent run support, nothing close to what Duke has had to suffer through this year.

by jlk9697 on Aug 13, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

our offense has been shut out 3 more times than the Braves…and 5 more times than any other team in the majors…14. And we’ve been held to 1 run 16 times…that’s 30 games…well over a quarter of the schedule…that we’ve basically had no chance…short of a shutout…to win.

by Thunder on Aug 13, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Nonetheless..

…wins and losses are not what’s important to this team, right now. It’s a matter of consistently improving and getting better.

Would you rather see Paul’s stats remain the same and he have a 10-5 record

OR

Improved statistics across the board, but zero run support?

The scary thing is that Maholm has regressed this year, just within himself, nothing to do with run support, records, or anything. I hope it’s a case of a lingering injury and not major league hitters have caught on to average stuff.

Krazy – I agree, Maholm is a #3 starter, at best really. Even so, his stats barely warrant fifth starter status..
