Joey Schoenfeld Signs

The Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates have signed 10th-round pick Joey Schoenfeld.  Pittsburgh now has their top 12 picks from the draft signed and 13 of their top 14.  The Pirates have signed 22 draft picks overall.  Baseball America reports that Schoenfeld signed for $195,000.

Although there are still some upside guys left unsigned, at this point I think you have to say that the Pirates' draft plan has worked fairly well.  Outfielder Matt Den Dekker and pitcher Josh Urban would be really good guys to get nailed down to make this a very good overall draft class.

He was clearly the best player yet to sign in the draft, and IMO this draft class is officially a success on paper now. Big upside with the bat. He dealt with some injuries in high school, so I wouldn’t put too much into numbers there.

Glad to see another catcher sign.

We could really use the depth there.

P-G says we’re a hair over $8M for total bonuses, so we may not be done signing yet, either.

That seems like enough money to get a couple more players.

My wish list at this point is Den Dekker and one of Heller/Cooper. They’re all going to be tough though.

Inman, den Dekker, Urban, Heller, Dermody and Cooper are really the only players I’m still interested in. I think they can get deals done with at least two of them, three and above would be fantastic.

Those guys are all good...

…but there are hardly any players on our draft board where I’d be disappointed to hear that they’d signed.

has an interesting article on terrible, terrible contracts currently on teams’ books
when you think about the potential the bucs have for $8 mil, even if every single guy fails, it still doesn’t stack up to how much money is wasted on mediocre, aging or outlier talent bought in a peak year or flatout stupidly paid for.

Or to put it another way, this great, inspiring rebuild the farm, draft still was cheaper than the cost of acquiring…

That’s the one guy I never understood. I mean all the other bums Littlefield signed had at least one All Star worthy season. He never hit well and from what I can tell or remember, he wasn’t that great a fielder. I know he got injured when we first got him. What was Littlefield’s rational for signing him, if any ?

Think that was a Bonifay extension.

Not that blaming DL is ever a bad gut-level response.

by Vlad on Aug 13, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Bonifay signed him for one year at about $1M or $1.5M, as there wasn’t much market for him. Then he had a pretty good spring so Bonifay signed him to a 4-yr, $15M extension just a month or two after signing him for a tenth of that.

A good Spring ...

so by Bonifay’s rational, Craig Monroe would have earned a $140 million more ?

What?

No love for Burnitz?

by Slick1 on Aug 13, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

Burnitz salary was $6 million. Randa was $4 million. Mondesi was $1.150 million. None of these guys took $8 million from the Pirates.

Fine.

Jermoy Burnitz = Pedro Alvarez money.
Joe Randa = Tony Sanchez, Zach Von Rosenberg, Nathaniel Baker money
Mondesi = Colton Cain money.
