Is it time to cut the cord?
Should management consider bringing up Alvarez, Tabata, Walker and giving them a chance to see if they are ready for MLB pitching? How much longer are we going to give Moss, Pearce, LaRoche to try to develop into hitters with a little pop in their bats? We have almost no extra-base hit ability, which coupled with a weakend defense and generally poor pitching, has caused the Pirates to be both boring and lousy. What will it take for management to try something new? I can't believe we are going to be force-fed this collection of stiffs for the remaining 50 games with no changes. Can we trade Neil?

Relax Beavis
Bringing up those guys for a month and half won’t contribute anything other than starting their major league clocks and potentially stunting their growth.
If it’s so boring don’t watch till next year. Have fun

Actually I should give myself a -1 because it should have been “Settle down Beavis”. But I’m nitpicky

only lawyers and English teachers should care for grammar are you one?
The Pirates,Reds,Royals, and Padres are not major league teams

IPF says the pic is his daughter, so don’t get too worked up, or he’ll demand Charlie cuts the cord on you.

That was (I think) a Beavis and Butt-head joke, not meant to be taken literally.

Clueless and nearsighted
Look, we’re all anxious to see Alvarez and Tabata in bucco uniforms (Some of us Walker), but like Travis says, it would be a huge hindrance just to spice things up.
Who knows how the progression of McCutchen might have gone if they rushed him to the bigs for a try-out two years ago?
Try following the minor league games more closely than the ML team. That’ll at least give you optimism and keep things interesting for the rest of the season.

Yeah
Let’s not rush Walker. Lets wait until he hits in AAA…..Sure wouldn’t want to stunt his development. In reality, we shouold send him to AA and promote Alverez

Call me crazy...
but Pearce is the only player (besides McCutchen) hitting consistently right now. He’s drawing walks, and he has reached base in every start since his last recall. I don’t what else you can expect from him.
The bigger question is, when do you cut the cord with Ryan Doumit?

stay patient
Calling those players up now will do nothing but hurt them in the long run…
But when do you cut the cord on Ryan Doumit? ASAP he’s the most overrated Pirate i’ve seen in a long time. I can’t believe one decent year got this guy so much respect. He has no defense and his bat is’nt good enough to overlook his bad defense or good enough for a position change. Kinda in the same position as Andy Laroche. Laroche has a good glove but not enough power to play a corner infield spot, and not good enough glove for a position change. Doumit shoulda been sent away this offseason at his peak value. Maybe hopefully this offsseason we can dump him for somebody with some upside. Then we can only hope Jeff Clement can transition back into catching even with his bad knees (has good hands/arm) or that Tony Sanchez gets here as quick as possible.

"No defense" is a bit strong, there.
He’s below average, but nowhere near butchers like Victor Martinez.
I’m also amused by the idea that we already know how much power Andy LaRoche is going to have for the rest of his life at the ripe old age of 25, or that you can’t be a useful 3B without popping 20+ a year.

just curious here
how hard is it for players to transition to a different position?
so DL screwed things up by moving Walker from catcher- if say, we wanted to put him back there, how hard would it be for him? It seems to me Walker’s bat would be much more competitive if he was catching. Of course, I have no clue about his defensive abilities- essentially, he still has age on his side (but not for much longer) and he is, from all the stats and discussion around here, not a very large jump away from the bigs- he needs to be more consistent, perhaps work more on hitting for average, since clearly his bat has in it to occasionally transition into serious hitting zones. Also, since he has (some) prior experience catching…

He was moved because he was a shitty catcher.
His defense got thrashed by just about everyone that watched him as a catcher.

Pretty much, yeah.
As little as I like most of DL’s judgments, I think he made the right call when he moved Walker. The scouting consensus on his defense behind the plate was just awful, and whatever his other failings he’s become a plus glove at 3B.

Oh, and at this point...
…Pearce’s ISO is only a hair under .200. He’s doing fine right now, at least as far as power’s concerned.

Pearce, Moss and Russell, are useless excuses for Major league talent
Pearce, Pearce, Pearce.
Dude, apparently you have a crush on this guy, but get it through your thick skull.
He is not a capable major league baseball player.
He will never be a vital piece that the team can count on for consistent OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION.
That being said, just admit , he blows, and the team should cut ties with this guy ASAP.
If he is going to take up a spot on the 40 man roster, let him do it as a starter at the AAA level, not the major league level.
He has his shot, and except for his glove, he has failed miserably.
Time to move on without him or his butt buddie , Brandon Moss.
They are not even suitable guys to have as pinch hitters, mainly because of their high rate of strikeouts, and just plain old bad at bats.
So quit campaigning for Steve Pearce, and/or Brandon Moss.
It’s just a waste of time, and brain power.

Or...
Or since his most recent call-up he’s hitting .262/.357/.459 with 6 doubles, 2 homers, 6 RBI and a steal. And he’s reached base every game he’s started.
But yeah, he’s terrible.

that you use way too many stats? It’s not about the statistics, its about how they play

That's a lot of words to use....

Sorry, but when you just say “he’s bad” over and over without supporting your position, it just sounds like “Blah, blah, blah.”

Alvarez, Tabata, Walker
Which one doesn’t belong and why…….
Funny thing is I have nothing against bringing Walker up because my general belief is that he has no real future in MLB……
There is no reason to bring up Alvarez or Tabata.
by haven on Aug 15, 2009 7:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Even if Walker doesn't have a future in MLB...
…they still shouldn’t bring him up right now, because he’s significantly worse at this point than our other options.
