Nate Mclouth on DL now....

Now Mclouth goes to the DL, this trade looks better and better. Nady is on the DL gone for the season, Marte hasn't done much, the only player and of course this will always be the arguement is Jason Bay. Gorzo walks to many guys, he wasnt a big loss, Grabow has been efficient, Snell still gives up the long ball and gets smacked around, Jack Wilson hasnt done too much in Seattle either, Freddy will still have lingering injuries. Burnett is just a lefty we still could use in the pen, and Nyjer well hes been consistent and better than Milledge defensively and offensively, Maybe management knows what theyre doing after all....doesnt seem to bad for what we lost and to see what we got in return. Just a thought

I agree

Although just because a guy goes on the DL or gets hurt doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good trade; More than anything that just means good luck for the team that got rid of that player.

No, but...

Maybe the fact that McLouth was hitting .260/.344/.419 for the Braves before this DL stint makes it look better for us. Especially since he’s only hit 6 homers for them and 15 for the whole year. I think it’s safe to say 2008 was a fluke.

Gorzo

You could tell by watching Gorzo that he’s not going to make it, even though he gave up only 1 to the Bucs. With proper patience by us, he would have walked 10 guys and been gone by the end of 4 (he only pitched 5 as it is).

Unless he gets his command, he will be yo-yo’ed between Iowa and Chicago, in my opinion, no matter if he hits 93 on the gun…

Agreed

I agree its not about who gets hurt, I also agree with the gorzo comment if we had any patience it would of been a whole different game, with the rotation chicago has he has no chance.

The worst one this season.

On Saturday’s post game show, they showed all 8 of Gorzo’s strikeout pitches and only two of them were in the zone. The rest were either letter high or about 6 inches outside the strike zone. And the Pirates swung and miss at all 8 of them. I’d like to see Gorzo throw 8 K’s against the Cardinals, Brewers, Dodgers or Phillies. So far with the Cubs, he’s had success against two of the worst hitting teams in baseball, the Pirates and Reds. Meanwhile, he got rocked by the Rockies. I mean, anyone can shut the Pirates down at this point, except a crappy AA pitcher. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Pirates faced one of those every night?

As for Nate McLouth, players get injured. It happens. Let’s wait and see what he does and what Morton, Gorkys and Locke do the next few years.

Also, I’m sick of hearing about Nyjer Morgan like he’s Albert F***ing Pujols. He’s a slap hitting OF with good defense, I wish people would stop talking about him like he’ll be admitted to the Hall of Fame with Pujols and Lincecum.

Freddy was just another guy they sold high on and I really liked the return on it. The one thing to remember about him is that he’s 31 years old. He’s probably not going to have a much longer career. Same with Jack Wilson. Both will be lucky to still be playing in three or four years.

Agreed

Ryan Zimmerman basicly called him the next Ricky Henderson. Then again, who did the Washington Expos have as their lead off man before ?

Let's not downplay Morgan too much.

Slap hitting outfielder with good defense, yes. But WAR has him as the 12th most valuable player in the Majors. Of all center fielders, only Matt Kemp is more valuable by that measure. He’s having a legitimately awesome year.

All that said, still a dumb move by the Nats. They weren’t exactly one piece away from contending, and this is in all likelihood going to be a career year for Morgan.

Quick Question

Tomorrow, who would you rather have starting in CF? Nyger or Cutch?

by GeneClines on Aug 18, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Cutch.

But not because Nyjer is bad. Because Cutch is great, and he has a future.

If we were in contention this year…maybe Nyjer.

With the big caveat of IF THE TEAM WERE IN CONTENTION.

Ideally, I’d like to have them both playing. But…NyjMo is the better player RIGHT NOW. Sure, Cutch will be leaps and bounds ahead of him in the future, but he’s not there yet. If the Pirates were in contention, I’d rather see NyjMo. The trade was better for the Pirates’ current plans because of what Milledge can be, but you just don’t make those moves when you’re in contention and you have a player in a peak season.

well

if the team were in contention, perhaps we dont make the trades and get Cutch up. But if Cutch and Morgan were both up, and we could only play one of them and the team were in contention, I doubt that Nyjer would be playing.

Judging the return

At this point, it seems crazy to try and evaluate these trades the right way. I know everyone want to go and give a knee jerk reaction but the fact is, we don’t know now and we won’t know for a few year if these trades will work for us. I mean who knows, Bryan Morris might even turn into the stud that he was supposed to be and make this trade look great for us. That said i like the direction these pirates are going and i think these moves will pay off two or three or four years down the road.

Still no mention of Nady ?

Last year wasn’t every Yinzer gaging on their Arn City that we traded Nady ? I never liked him and was thrilled we got rid of him. I’m happy with all of NH’s trades… sell high !

I think Bay always got so much more of a backlash here especially when he continued playing at a high level with Boston and was a valuable player for them in the playoffs.

Also I didn’t help that Moss, Andy, and Hanson sucked up a storm in 2008 after the trade.

I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

There was a huge amount of screaming over Nady.

Even more so than Bay, at the time the deals were made.

I never understood it then, and I don’t understand it now.

Hmmm, I guess I’m glad I wasn’t in Pittsburgh when those trades took place then.

i was

although i was just getting introduced to the pirates and the complications, at that point. I remember thinking it was a fad kinda thing. People grumbled less coz we got 4 players for Bay, but we got 4 for Nady +Marte, and the math didn’t add up!

by BurgherKing on Aug 18, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

And who could forget Bob Smizik’s brilliant plan to offer Nady a long-term contract in order to “show the fans of Pittsburgh there is a commitment to keeping good players”.

That woulda worked out real well…

Hey

I love Iron City, although it doesn’t taste the same since the mills shut down….And I loved the Nady trade! Lets not wrap a great beer in with half-witted fans.
