Cain

Havent seen a status on getting him signed lately. In my opinion he is the key to this draft. I also think he will have the biggest impact of any players taken this year.

Potential ace in 3 years!

Re:Cain

I’ve seen some University of Texas blogs mention over the last few weeks that he’s unlikely to make it to camp, which would seem to augur well for us.

Man I hope that's true

Signing either him or ZVR turns a good draft into a great one.

Farm System

I wouldnt count on Cain being in the farm system for long. The farm system if defiantely well stocked though.

I’m very eager to see Cain sign, but are you his agent or a member of his family?

by WTM on Aug 3, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

No

To answer your question, no. I am neither his agent nor a member of his family. I have just been fortunate enough to see him play in person. I know what he is capable of and did not get my information from a scouting report. His fastball has more velocity than reported by most publications including Baseball America. You will read that his fastball rest between 88-90 which is off. His FB actually sits between 92-94 and touched 96 this year. He is only 18 and going to get much stronger over the next several years. His curve ball is solid and is improving and he has been working on his change up quite a bit. He is a fierce competitor on the field and as good a person as you will find off the field. He is great as both a pitcher and a hitter, so I would hate to have to be the one to choose what path his career goes.

If they get him signed he will make the Bucs look genius.

That’s nice to hear, but you’re beating this drum a bit too hard.

by WTM on Aug 3, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok

Let them not sign him and him go to Texas and you can watch him play in the CWS next year then tell me I am beating drum too hard.

I guess you missed this part.

the lady doth protest too much

from prior posts where you claim to know cain personally to the fast becoming incessant posts concerning his general awesomeness….well, perhaps you can see where folks might get the idea you may be very close to the situation.

Sanchez

Tony has an OPS of about .950 so far in his pro career. I know he will probably cool off, but that isn’t bad for a defensive-minded catcher.

Yeah

I’d really like to hear about ZVR, Cain, Dodson (did he sign already?), Heller, Inman, den Dekker and Sano (surprisingly quiet on that front wrt all teams!)

I remember BuccoFans.com had a page to track signings, but I’ve lost it. If anyone has it, can they please provide the link?

Wow

It never ceases to amaze me how people twist words to read what they want them to say. If I am not mistaken I said, “I have just been fortunate enough to see him play in person.” I do not recall saying that I knew him personally. If someone would like provide quotation I might be able to see where you are coming from.

Having seen Mike Leake, Matt Purke, and Cain all pitch over the last year and I would take Cain. Personally I think the Texas Rangers were stupid to pick Purke, knowing his money demands would be that of a #1 or #2 pick. Considering their financial problems the reality of them being able to meet his demands were not good. At least they wont have to far to go next year to watch him pitch at TCU. They could have taken Cain at #14 and signed him for slot and had him pitching in the minors for a month already. Although Leake probably had the best season by a college pitcher this year next to Strausburg I did not see a pitcher that justified being picked 8th in the draft.

Just my take as a student of the game. Time will tell!

I have had the pleasure of knowing this young man for several years

While digging through all your posts to find where you said you knew him (because I remembered you saying it too), it occurred to me you haven’t made a single post where you weren’t going ballistic about him. Are you the president of the Colton Cain fan club or something? Er actually, you’re probably one of his parents, huh?

But he never responded...

Freddy Sanchez

Didn’t the Giants take on the rest of his salary?

You’d think that would free up some money to sign one/two of Von Rosenberg, Cain or Stevenson

Damn it’d be nice to have one of those collegiate arms jet-ski through the farm system

They had enough money already budgeted to sign those guys.
