Clement to replace Pearce?

The Pirate broadcasters last night were talking about this being Pearce's last chance to prove himself believing that management will bring up Clement in September and then give him a chance to play 1B for the remainder of the season.  I think I am willing to give up on Pearce believing that he just doesn't have it and so I hope they are correct and that management does allow Clement a chance to play in hopes of showing us what we can or cannot expect from him next season.  It sure would be fun to see him perform well because it would give us all something to talk about during the off-season and provide plenty of fuel for fantasy fans.

The only problem is

If they bring Clement up as a September call up, they will lose a year of service time. Whether management cares enough about keeping him for 2015 instead of only until 2014 will be the question. Personally, that is a long time away and I think it would be more valuable to him and to the Pirates to see what he can do in September and deal with the lost service time later.

Where are you getting that idea? He’s not in any danger of losing a service year yet. Just because you play in the majors in a season doesn’t make it count for a whole season. He’s got .15 years of MLB service time. He can play the rest of the year and it won’t affect his free agency status at all.

Clement currently has 150 days of major league service time. A year of major league service time is 172 days. As it stands right now, Clement has five years and 22 days of team control left.

If Clement were called up on September 1st, he would spend 34 days in the majors the rest of the season. That would keep him in the Pirates system through the 2014 season.

If the Pirates don’t call up Clement, they retain control through the 2015 season. In order to save the extra year of control, the Pirates would have to call Clement up after September 13th.

Batting average is definitely the most important indicator of a player’s performance…

Yep...

the same one who has 21 HR’s on the season.

Yeah

You know, the guy who has OPSed .867, 1.131, and .872 in his three seasons at the AAA level.

79 At bats

Seems a little early to be writing him off….it really does seem that Pearce is not held in the highest regard by the management. Well, if it happens, i’ll but blind faith in the leadership that they are making the correct decision.

Don’t know why, put I always rooted a little harder for Pearce. I’d really like to see him get a GFJ chance. Of course, if he’d hit the snot out of the ball for a couple weeks he likely would.

everytime pearce has a good game they bench him the next, thus he has no chance to be hot.

Moss

I wish the Pirates would play Jones at first base everyday for the rest of this season, and Moss in right field to see if he can be a regular.

Moss isn’t a regular, and the organization has already made up its mind about it. He’s a fourth outfielder at best. Tabata will be the starting RF next season.

I would put the odds.....

of Tabata starting next season in RF at about 5% and that’s probably high, if for no other reason than service time. Like they did with Cutch this year, the team would be much better served to keep him down for the first 6 weeks of the season and retain his services for an extra year.

He’ll be starting by June 1.

by PGHcager on Aug 23, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Moss had his chance in April, May, and June. He didnt show us anything. I somewhat feel bad for him now because he looks so bad at the plate when he has been getting AB’s lately.

IMO, I’d love to see Pearce play almost every game at 1B the rest of the season. I love his defense and if given the whole month of Sept to play, maybe his bat will continue to turn around, but I think Clement is gonna get called up and steal a good amount of playing time.

Moss is not the answer.

I do think we will open the season with Milledge, Cutch and Jones in the OF next year with Clement (or a Clement / Pearce platoon at 1B). Tabata will start the year at Indy but will likley come up in late May or early June. He will then replace either Clement or Jones if one of them is not producing.

Unless Pearce suddenly starts really impressing, I’m OK with Clement coming up and playing once the Indy season is over.

Clement is definitely coming up in September.

NH wants him to spend a month with Perry Hill.

off-topic

Posting here because it seems to be the best place around to talk about prospects in general. Even though there’s no game today for the Pirates, there are interesting games to check out in the minor leagues:

Brad Lincoln pitches for Indy today.

Bryan Morris pitches for Lynchburg.

Could also post your own fan post.

not much to write really

except what I wrote above, and its just another start, so its not like this is the final one before they move up, so just wanted to leave a note. Maybe a fanpost is a better idea, though, although I dont like cluttering up the sidebar unless there’s something meaningful to discuss, or that I can contribute.
