And Poof! Goes the Option, Freddy on the DL

So, the story for both players, Jack and Freddy, seems to have played out as badly as possible for both of them.  While there is still a possibility I guess that Seattle and San Francisco could pick up their options ($8.4 for Jack and $8.1 for Freddy) I just don't see any chance in the world that that happens.  Jack doesn't have a player option and Freddy is now virtually certain not have his player option available since he won't make 600 PAs.

So, what do you think each guy gets next year?

How do Jack and Freddy do in terms of getting contracts next year vs. what the Pirates apparently offered-- 2 year/$8 million for Jack and 2 years/$10 million for Freddy?

It will be very interesting

I’m predicting NH’s offer will be about accurate. I’m wondering what the Giants might be willing to offer for Young? Maybe they might be interested in LaRoche or GASP Walker as a new second baseman. Maybe the Bucco’s could rook ’em again.

I hope they both have a lot of money in the bank

They could both be looking at 1 year deals at a third of what they made this year.

Isn’t that what NH offered them? And was heavily criticized?

by WstCstBucco on Aug 25, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

No NH offered them each 2 year deals. I bet he is secretly relieved they turned him down. Given they are now both on DL, after missing big chunks of other recent years, it’s too risky to give them more than 1 year deals.

I can't vote...

…because you didn’t add a “Freddy does better, Jack gets the same” choice.

So consider this comment a vote for that.

Yes we still

can have a BR reference bet on something like that. I like my position.

Depends how long Freddy's out, I guess.

If he misses the rest of the year, or something like that, I could be in trouble. But if he’s able to come back healthy in a couple of weeks, it won’t make any real difference.

As for Jack, he’s still going to be helped by the crappy FA SS crop, if Seattle doesn’t pick up the option. The best available FAs this year are Orlando Cabrera, Miguel Tejada, Omar Vizquel, Marco Scutaro, Bobby Crosby, Khalil Greene, and Adam Everett. You can make a case for Scutaro and Tejada ahead of him, but Jack’s got a very strong position within that peer group. And being a Type B where the other top candidates are Type A won’t hurt him, either (same goes for Freddy there as well, come to think of it).

I expect the Giants will pick up Freddy's option anyway.

I don’t think that they would have been willing to give up Alderson with the idea of letting Freddy walk after this season.

by WestCoastBuc on Aug 25, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

No chance....

they would have done it if that is how it played out, but his injury means they don’t have to, so why pay $8.1 million for an injury prone guy who won’t command anything near that on the open market?

by David Todd on Aug 26, 2009 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

The pick up of Freddy was for the playoff push, that’s why they gave up Alderson. I can’t see them paying Freddy Sanchez $8.1M for next year. Either he negotiates for a multi-year contract and takes lower, or goes to Free Agency and still doesn’t get quite what NH offered him before the trade.

It's worth remembering, however...

…that they could easily decline the option, sign him to a multi-year deal, and still break a $5M AAV. Which is what I see as the most likely option, and which would mean that he was right (from a financial standpoint) to turn down our offer.

by Vlad on Aug 26, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Certainly a possibility....

I have to think two years of shoulder injuries and his knee injury are getting to be a pretty big red flag however. Last year it effected performance, this year they are keeping him off the field. And he will be 32, his skills aren’t gonna improve.

I guess I come back to the idea that he “didn’t think he could make a counteroffer,” which is ludicrously stupid and wonder if he had countered with $13/2 years where we would be today. I personally like our situation much better now, but you have to wonder if the Pirates had said yes to that, would Jack & and his BFF be our SS and 2nd bagger through 2011?

by David Todd on Aug 26, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the both...

get extensions. Sanchez will get a little better than what the Pirates offered and I think Jack gets 2 years at 4 million per year. So I guess I basically voted for Vlad’s option.

I just wonder....

If Freddy stayed and was put on the DL by the Pirates, how many yinzers at the PBC blog would be complaining that he’s only on the DL so that the Pirates wouldn’t have to pay him…

by IAPiratesFan on Aug 26, 2009 2:02 AM EDT reply actions

Well I think it is a fair.....

question and one I am sure the Bucs are glad they don’t have to answer.
