Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"Definitely a system that has taken a pretty big step forward"

John Sicklels' s review of his pre-season top 20 Bucs prospects is up. As he, notes, the 2010 list will look very different, given the last two drafts and the mid-season trades.  Just looking at the West Virginia roster, one sees Tony Sanchez, Starling Marte, Chase d'Arnaud, Rudy Owens, Aaron Pribanic, and Brett Lorin who will be in the running for inclusion. The other quote that struck me from the comments was, "I hadn't realized what a thin system this was coming into the season." But I guess NH did.

Chase and Rudy Arn't there anymore

they got called up to Lynchburg, but that does look like a group that can get some one to the majors and make a difference

This is a recap...

…of his ranking from the start of the year, and whether guys improved or fell back.

Barthmaier was on the list at that time, since he hadn’t been injured (or released) yet.

Stunning

How many guys on the list were injured or had poor years. Wouldn’t be surprised if at least 10 names fell off this list, and are replaced with Huntington’s acquisitions. Goes to show that a farm system can fall into disrepair very quickly…

Either that or it shows how terrible drafting, international signing, player development, and trading can make a really awful farm system.

Alvarez has been pretty insane . . .

Since the AA All Star Game. I know it’s an arbitrary cut-off, but minorleaguebaseball.com’s splits makes it an easy reference. Since then in 148 ABs Pedro’s batting .372/.472/.622 with 8 HRs, 28 BBs and 33Ks. Obviously, that batting average can’t be maintained, but an isolated slugging of .250 is very good, his walk rate is exceptional and, perhaps most importantly, he is only striking out once every 4.5 ABs. If he can maintain a K rate close to that level, even once every 4, he’s gonna be trouble.

"Insane" is just about right

For August an OPS of 1006, a strikeout rate half of that in June, and as many walks as strikeouts. Only by comparison does Neil Walker’s August OPS of 914 look modest. BTW Walker had a BABIP of only 207 in April and 208 in July, which is almost impossibly low.

Viva Clemente!

Looks like....

…..Alvarez was showing rust in the first half after taking off his time from college due to his late signing.

Hopefully the Alvarez of the second half is the Alvarez we drafted.
