Angels trade for Scott Kazmir
Convince me the Pirates shouldn't have traded for Scott Kazmir if it only cost the Angels a AA reliever with spotty control and an A+ hitter who was out all of last year and a good chunk of this year with injuries. Wouldn't Kazmir have crushed the NL Central?

Based on the talent.........
….. and age I would agree with you 100% but what is the contract the Buc’s would have to assume??

Maybe
The fact that his velo is down, he has lost his slider, and he’s still owed over 20 million? I felt the DRays should have traded Kaz in the offseason because his value was never going to be higher.
I believe
That since the Angels claimed him, we never had a chance to. The waiver order goes worst to best in AL, then worst to best in NL. So we’ll never know if we had interest.
Also, these are rough figures (I didn’t look it up, but think I read them being floated around), but I think he’s due somewhere around 8mill next year and 10mill the year after. Would’ve been an OK pickup, but his contract would’ve probably scared the FO away. Also, as said, I don’t think we had the chance to claim him.

The Rays got Sean Rodriguez in return as a PTBNL, who can hit a bunch. He might be a better player than Kaz.

Rodriguez is a player.
Salt Lake is a good place to hit, but he still projects at this point as an above-average 2B. Similar to Mark Bellhorn in style, but maybe a bit better.
And I’m only saying he might be better because Kaz is constantly injured at this point.

This suddenly looks like a LOT better deal now that we know the PTBNL was Rodriguez. Why even bother making him a PTBNL?
It's after the waiver deadline.
So that creates some extra procedural hoops. Like when Arizona and Minnesota just “sold” each other players (Rauch and Mulvey) for exactly the same amount of money.
