Minor League Trade and Jack Story

The Pirates traded minor league reliever Mike Koplove to the Seattle Mariners for shortstop Deybis Benitez.

Here is a link to Koplove's minor league stats:

He's been effective in Indianapolis, but doesn't profile as a power arm the Pirates management appears to be so fond of these days.  It would be nice for Seattle to give him a look.

I don't know anything about Benitez so I'll leave that to others, but clearly his future was blocked in Seattle because they just got some guy name Jack Wilson.  Here is an interesting article in the Seattle paper today.  Some good insight I hadn't heard before.

Benitez's stats:

Two interesting notes:  His only played 12 games this year so I assume he has some sort of injury and he pitched 2/3 inning.  Tony Perez, Jr.? (Joke)

Good trade

Koplove wasnt going to help them this year and taking a flier on a 22 yr old SS isn’t a bad thing

Koplove can probably be an average ML RP right now.

But with our pen unexpectedly solid at the moment, he wasn’t going to get a shot. As such, it’s nice to see him go to an org where he might pull some ML time. In addition to being good for karma, it makes minor league free agents more likely to sign with you in the future.

Benitez appears to be a young Venezualan SS-2B-CF. Stats here. I can’t find much of anything on him on the web, which tends to be more the case for non-prospects. Still, welcome aboard.

It's tough to be blocked by Jack Wilson...

since according to some sources, he’s the M’s SS for the next five years.

Heh.

During which he will not regress at all. That’s what I heard on ESPN. In fact, they said Jack has over a decade of All-Star caliber play left in him.

Of COURSE he does.

That’s what I’m sayin’.

I’d hate to be Seattle’s AAA SS right about now.

maybe Neal

should call about Triunfel – since Seattle won’t be needing him before 2015

I love my all-star shortstops to miss over a season’s worth of games during the last 3 years and to have a bat that profiles better as a ball boy than a shortstop

The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.

You know...

Compared to most #8 hitters in the Majors, Jack’s bat wasn’t that bad, really. Sure, he never EVER should have hit second in the order for even a day, but a .269 career average isn’t too bad for an 8-hole hitter. He lingered between .255-.270 for most of his career, and while he never walked, he was at least as good as the average 8-hole hitter.

Not worth anything approaching the money he made, but still. For perspective, Cedeno’s bat is a DOWNGRADE from Jack where career numbers are concerned, despite the decent hitting he’s shown so far. Cedeno also never walks.
