I'm not saying Neal Huntington has been perfect. But this could be one of the worst articles written, imo. Clearly this guy has a blinded love for Nyjer Morgan, Freddy Sanchez, and Jack Wilson. Also going as far as to call Morgan a young talent and insinuating that the Sanchez/Wilson trades were 'salary dumps.' Funny how there is no mention of the draft spending to be found.

Isn’t he the guy that maintains that his site is not a blog because he hates blogs?

Sure looks like a blog to me.

I was just shocked that the blog entry concentrated more of the Nyjer Morgan trade than any other trade.

Where does the $40 million revenue sharing number come from? I know MLB stopped officially releasing figures around 2003, but the last number I saw reported anywhere was 2006 and it was about $25 million. Where does the 40 number come from?

by ElDuce on Sep 16, 2009 6:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dejan said a few weeks ago that $40M is wrong. I think he said it’s $20 or $25M.

He probably found the biggest guess he could

and chose to use it.

Keep in mind

If he cites prior years, that’s totally bogus. Because of the way revenue sharing contributions are calculated, the Yankees’ and Mets’ new ballparks were expected to relieve them of most or all of their contributions due to money they supposedly expended on the projects. That would’ve taken a huge chunk out of the money to be distributed.

A recurring theme for Murray Chass’ blog posts.

deadpsin.com

The FireJoeMorgan guys got to be editors for the day there and they ripped into Murray Chass (much like they used to do on their own site). Funny stuff.

Deadspin.com

Yeah, the FJM reunion at Deadspin yesterday was great. :D

It made me realize how much I miss FJM.

Thanks for the post

I never would have known about the FJM bit. I still wander over to their site and read the old stuff.

"If they can get rid of Nyjer Morgan...

They can get rid of Andrew McCutchen"

Wow. Just… wow.

I just saw that the guy at MLBTradeRumors who liked the column was nice enough to link to another of his articles about “games writers play”. Specifically pointing to this quote:

Perhaps the most important question is this: Is there a way for the writer to write the column he wants to write without using all of those anonymous quotes? There is.

The writer can ask the same people the same questions and use their responses to form a consensus assessment, which he can report without resorting to a string of quotes from one anonymous executive/official/scout after another.

He later wrote the Pirates article and used the same tactic:

"They’re going to have some explaining to do," a baseball official said. "It’s going to be difficult for them absent some substantial moves between now and April."

Way to follow your own advice, Murray.

Never heard of this guy before, probably won’t remember him when I awaken. There are way to many d-bags with blogs to worry about the random, never to be heard from ever bloggers.

Murray Chass

covered baseball for The New York Times for decades, if not centuries.
That’s not to defend what he wrote, just to say that he’s not a nobody.

Or perhaps

the sarcasm here eluded me.

by Zadoras on Sep 17, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope; no sarcasm, just never heard of him. I just read back over his blog a second time, and still do think much of him.

by lighthouse913 on Sep 17, 2009 4:20 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

don’t think much of him.

Considering all the false information in this article—he’s way off both on the Pirates’ payroll and the amount of revenue sharing money—he obviously misses his editors.

Actually Tim, from MLBTradeRumors.com did not like the article and disagreed with what Murray wrote.

That was actually a typo. Meant to type the word “linked”.

The sad part is...

…that Chass used to be a really good sportswriter. Unfortunately, he’s well into senile decay at this point.

I'm impressed . . .

. . . that Smizik knows how to copy and paste.

He probably doesn’t realize that Chass hates blogs.

if I remember correctly Chass is from Pittsburgh.

he used to be a good beat reporter at the Times, but then became full of himself and write as if he was the fount of all baseball knowledge… would demand that Steinbrenner talk to him… tell Selig how to run the game… etc.

he clearly has gone even farther downhill since the TImes let him go.

by nycbucs on Sep 18, 2009 11:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Funny how a writer can go downhill like that. I was surprised years ago when I read somewhere that Dick Young was once a highly regarded sportswriter. I knew his stuff only from his later years, when he’d turned into an angry, racist reactionary.
