From Keith Law on the Pirates signing of baseball's first Lithuanian prospect (ESPN Insider only, I think):

---

The Pirates... signed RHP Dovydas Neverauskas, the first baseball prospect signed out of Lithuania, for $60,000. Neverauskas is all projection at this point, with a fastball up to 88 mph and a tall, lanky build. His delivery is awkward and unclean, and he has no viable second pitch, but he does have some run on his fastball. He turned 16 in January...

---

Extremely young with at least some intrigue for relatively little, so it sounds good to me. Are the Pirates positioning themselves as one of the more expansive international scouting programs?

International thinking.

If nothing else, Huntington has done a good job getting his scouts to think internationally. It’s one thing to scout Latin America. Everyone does that, even when Littlefield was in charge, he’s the one who hired Rene Gayo. But you never heard of the Pirates signing guys from South Africa, Korea or Europe during the Littlefield years. It’s a very refreshing change.

I think it’s interesting that we’ve signed no one from the Dominican this period as of yet (I think).

Damn, he’s already 16 and he doesn’t have a hammer curve or flawless mechanics? Don’t they have any coaching in Lithuania?

I think they have a goat that eats baseballs. Does that count?

Pirates' Lithuanian prospect

Neverwinskas can join the Pirates’ Indian farmhands, Rinku and Dinku, in extended Spring training.
