In this article on Adam LaRoche's signing with Arizona it mentions that LaRoche has been a long time target of the Diamondbacks, and last offseason they had "serious discussions" about a trade of Miguel Montero and Chad Tracy for Adam LaRoche and Paul Maholm. I really hope that the stumbling block was that the Pirates wanted significantly more than Chad Tracy in addition to Montero. Montero would have been a nice starting point for a deal, but Chad Tracy being the only other piece would have been pretty awful.
