A number of the group have noted the need to improve starting pitching. In several posts Zogger has noted that league average pitching would be a step up. Adam Reynolds has noted the fielding deficiencies of the PBC, and there has been some controversy about how much better defense would improve the pitching. It's useful to note that the Pirates rank either last or next-to-last in our best attempts at measures of pitching that are independent of defense. FIP uses bases on balls, strikeouts, and home runs (all defense independent), and we ranked 15th of 16 NL teams. In contrast, xFIP focuses on balls, strikeouts, and fly balls (again defense independent), and we ranked 16th. Adding league average pitching would, as Zogger has noted, be a major improvement.
