Hot Stove Updates
I have some time on my hands waiting for the Penn State Ohio St game to start so I thought I'd post a couple of hot stove updates that I haven't seen discussed in any threads yet.
Via MLBTradeRumors.com below are a couple of rumors:
1) Padres and Royals are interested in trading for Marlins OF Cameron Maybin. At 23 yrs old he still has potential though his major leagure career to date has been disappointing. Would he make an interesting RF option for the Bucs?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/padres-marlins-discussing-cameron-maybin.html
2) The Braves have outrighted pitcher Kenshin Kawakami to AA. Indications are there has been a lot of discussion on possible trades. Could Kawakami be a Pirate's target?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/braves-outright-kenshin-kawakami-to-double-a.html
3) And today's reality check for those of us thinking we had a chance at getting some of the top flight free agents like Lee and Beltre; Kuroda has reportedly resigned with the Dodgers on a one year deal.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/kuroda-ready-to-re-sign-with-dodgers-1.html
With the Braves and Redsox already wheeling and dealing (DeJesus, Andrew Miller, etc.) the hot stove season is getting under way.

If Maybin comes
I think he has to play CF, move Cutch to LF, and then Jose to RF. That would make the most sense as far as range and speed. I think that would represent the best defensive (potentially) outfield in baseball, but would the offense be enough?
and this really bothers me
Because for one I would have never thought that Maybin would’ve been on the market let alone could’ve been had for what the Padres gave up…it just makes me think that their are people in the Pirates front office just not doing their job whether it be NH or someone else, and it’s a real shame.
I for one think Florida gave up on Maybin way too soon, and that he’s a potential 20-20 guy if not 30-30 with plus defense. I mean I remember watching his first career AB a few years ago at Yankee stadium against Roger Clemens, and he took him deep to straight away center field.
Like hilltopper said…acquiring Maybin would’ve gave us one of the best defensive outfields in the game regardless of what he would’ve done at the plate….One things for sure, and thats you can’t tell me the Pirates could’nt have put together a better offer than 2 fringe relievers…

I would said
Paul Malholm for Cam and see what they said about that. If they wouldn’t take paul (or doumit) I would have went to Owens.
you actually think the Marlins would take on Maholm's salary?
really?

There’s also the fact that he (Paul) was terrible this past season, and not a great bounce-back candidate due to a multi-year decrease in k/bb ratio.

Maybin could very easily be another Lastings Milledge, a good prospect brought up too early and missed development time.
As far as people in the Pirates front office not doing their job, there’s no way for us to know that here. The Bucs very well could have offered Moskos & Moreno, but the Marlins liked the Padres relief pitchers better. Would you really rather have overpaid for another unproven, yet highly ranked prospect? We need to eventually start acquiring proven commodities, which I believe are available on teams with bad contracts
that’s true that we’ll never be able to know what really goes on, and thats probably the worst part, but I also think that alot of my anger dates back to the Bay/Nady/Gorzelanny, etc… trades, because I really feel like there were alot better options out there but for whatever reason were’nt recognize or triggers were’nt pulled on those deals….

What better deal was even rumored to exist for Nady?
We got Jose Tabata out of him, and he’s starting in our OF and doing rather well, plus we got a useful pitcher in Ross Ohlendorf and minor league depth in Karstens and McCutchen. Just Tabata would have been a great return for Nady.

I'm convinced
We could have gotten Albert Pujols for Xavier Nady. I’m just convinced of it.

+1
Why get another Lasting Milledge type? While making mental errors, Milledge impressed me this year with his intensity and hustle. It didn’t seem as though JR gave him playing time commensurate with his contributions. Compare his production to those for whom he was riding the pines; Church, Young, Clement, and Doumit. More PT may reduce some of the mental mistakes and give him more consistent offensive production. In other words, I’m not ready to give up on him just yet.
Maybin
is significantly better than Milledge in the field, and gives a legit backup CF. His hitting in the minors is still improving, and he probably has a better shot than Lastings overall…
I do like a legit backup CF so we don’t play Cutch hurt next time.

Presley's OK
but in CF, i’d probably prefer Tabata over him. In any case, Maybin would be better than both…
by BurgherKing on Nov 14, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions
but you said as a BACKUP
not as a starter. maybin needs to play every day; i dont think anyone sees presley as anything more than a 4th outfielder
but you would be okay hindering maybin's potential
by moving him to the bench?
by white angus on Nov 15, 2010 10:37 AM EST up reply actions
there's RF
but yeah, the primary reason he would be on the bench would be because he didnt put it together while he had option years remaining…
so if he doesn’t cut it playing maybe thrice a week in RF, then he’d naturally have to come off the bench…

Nothing to lose ...
… in keeping Milledge. We’d need to give up somebody to get a Maybin type. At this point, I’d rather see if Lastings develops.
I'm not a Maybin fan
He just strikes out too much for a guy who doesn’t hit HRs. I’d rather have Milledge.
Seems like we have two of him already: Starling Marte and Gorky Hernandez. Also I don’t mind Milledge compared to the corner OF options on-hand (Church, Doumit), although like Cedeno/LaRoche he doesn’t start on a good team without considerable improvement.

Breaking News
Maybin trade to San Diego is final. I’m not a prospects expert, but it seems like San Diego gave up a bucket o’ balls and a bag o’ bats (okay, two middle relievers). Seems like a low amount to accept for a young player with potential.
Why don't you knock it off with them negative vibes?!
yup
My point exactly….
Maybin was given away for basically nothing…he could’ve been given away to us for next to nothing.
by FusilliJerry88 on Nov 13, 2010 9:31 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think that’s fair to Webb and Mujica. They are middle relievers, yes, but pretty darn good ones.

Closer to Meek/Hanrahan than Thomas/Jackson.

This deal for the padres may lead to the release of Tony Gwynn jr, who I’ve pointed out as a good pickup before.

Clint Barmes
Is apparently on the trade block, and a possible DFA candidate, according to MLBTR. If we can acquire him for a non-legitimate prospect, I would love to grab him to help the defense. He is due 3.3 M this season and would leave plenty of room to acquire a big bat (I still like Pena, although others don’t) or a good starting pitcher (De La Rosa is my favorite.)
pena does have a big bat, but its made of swiss cheese
hes a great guy, great teammate, everybody loves pena… but lets be honest, if we get a 1Bman, can we get someone who can do more than just swing for the fences?
by white angus on Nov 15, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions
pena reminds me alot of garrett jones.... hear me out
pena, unlike jones, was a high draft pick, thats where the differences end. both are left handed, both big first basemen. both have serious power and serious holes in their swing. both took forever to establish themselves in the majors with less than stellar numbers in the minors. both were let go by numerous franchises before finding lightning in a bottle for one season. now they are both back down to earth.

Pena
I probably shouldn’t have mentioned his name because I wanted to discuss Barmes, who I think is a great fit. Pena is an above average glove (from everything I have read, even if he has a negative dWAR number) who appears to be keeping himself in very good shape. He won’t replicate his MVP-esque 2007 season, but he was still very good in 2008 and 2009. His down 2010 moves Pena into our price range.
He is on a steady downward trend...
It’s possible is 2011 is worse than his 2010. He is not going to come cheap and will require multiple years; I say pass on Pena.
What is the best alternative use of our money?
I don’t think saving is a great idea, because I question whether that means the Bucs would actually spend more in the future.
I'd prefer Derek Lee to Pena...
I’d also try to get a pitcher via trade or free agency; assuming they are not going to move Pedro. I think Harang is a good fit and would rebound in Pittsburgh. I’d like Delarosa but I don’t think we could get him. I’d kick the tires on Garza or Shields and I’d try to get JJ Hardy. I would also see what Magglio Ordonez is expecting in terms of years. I think he has a little left in the tank. I wouldn’t hand out any contracts longer than three seasons.
I would
Sign Beltre* for third, trade for Barmes or Hardy, cut Cedeno, keep Neil at second, move Pedro to first, and platoon GFJ and Milledge in RF. :)
Sadly we won’t be getting any elite free agents, but I think my plan would work (of course I do, that’s why it’s my plan!)
*With the option to trade Beltre in 2013 when we hope Rendon to become a starter.
Why cut Cedeno outright?
At a minimum, he’d be a better UT IF than Diaz. Ciriaco is probably ticketed for AAA, since he has an option left.
$$$
I assume he will be making $2 M or so in arbitration. I think Diaz would be an acceptable UT, and we could use the money saved to sign a bullpen arm.
We have LaRoche as well
To fill in at second and third – Diaz would only get extended PT if Barmes went down.
You really think ...
that Barmes or LaRoche are good options at short stop?
I just don’t see it.
I said explicitly LaRoche for second and third
As a backup. Yes, I think Barmes would be an upgrade at SS.
I think Diaz would be an acceptable UT
That’s your problem, right there.
What has Diaz done in the past to lead you to that belief?
Diaz and Ciriaco ...
can’t match Cedeno’s statistics at AAA.
They would be horrible at the MLB level.
Diaz, in particular, would be lucky to hit a ball out of the infield. He’s an organization guy.
I think Ciriaco will be the same.
Cedeno may be below average. But he’s not useless.
And he’s much, much more valuable than another “bullpen arm.”
I think Ciriaco will be the same.
I think he’ll be pretty marginal, but Diaz would have to show significant development to even get to “marginal”. He’s below replacement level.
I think we've had this debate before ...
I think we both agree they suck.
And I’d really hate for either to be on the roster next year.
I can see why you think Ciriaco has slightly more upside. I just don’t think it’ll matter at the MLB level.
Both look like organization guys to me.
Now if Ciriaco were three years younger ….
i think ciriaco has a future as a decent utility guy
sorta like a rafael belliard but with some wheels. his defense and speed will keep him in the majors with somebody

I just hate to see people understate...
…the suckiness of Diaz by comparing him to a garden-variety space-filler. His suckiness is exceptional and transcendant, and should stand as a marvel and a warning to future generations.
is barmes a better 2b or SS at this stage of his career?
some people have mentioned chris nelson as a hopeful pirate target as well.
barmes has a very low OBP and not exactly the best fielder in the league at SS
kinda like cedeno but without the tan
by white angus on Nov 15, 2010 11:24 AM EST up reply actions
He seems like a defensive upgrade
and we could DFA Cedeno. Overall he is a much better fielder, hopefully someone can shed some light on his SS/2B splits, and his career trends.
The key to Barmes is cost. I made a mistake … I thought he as due 3.3 M in 2011, but that was his 2010 salary. He is 3rd year arbitration eligible in 2011.
eh, i just dont see barmes as an improvement in any area
especially since he will cost 3-4 times the amount ronny will get
by white angus on Nov 15, 2010 11:42 AM EST up reply actions
WAR has him as a significant upgrade
Cedeno:
2008: -.9
2009: -.2
2010: .4
Barmes
2008: 2.3
2009: 1.9
2010: 1.0
Now, I know the trends favor Cedeno, but Barmes isn’t THAT old, and Cedeno isn’t THAT young.
