Adam Dunn?

Was just watching the Fedko Fone Zone, and one yinzer caller was talking about hearing from an espn outlet that the bucs are talking to Adam Dunn.  Not only that, from what he was saying, it sounded like he heard that there was actual substance to the discussion.  As always, I was quick to come here to BD, and found nothing.  Then espn, MLBTR, and finally pirates.com.... nothing.  Is this just a case of hearsay/misunderstanding, or has anyone else heard anything of this also?  P.S.- Fedko seemed very uninformed when it came to Dunn, saying "maybe he could hit 25 home runs here."  This about a guy who has hit 38+ for 8 years straight or whatever it is?  With Pedro's Porch in right?  I wouldn't be surprised to see 40... and this is a team, as we all know, in dire need of a power bat.  Thoughts/discussion on the matter is welcome, even if this rumor is totally lacking any solid truth.

It’s all about the Benjamins, baby.

i agree

if the pirates offered the most money, the players union would make sure Dunn was a bucco

My first thought is where did his walks go? Second is he’s poor defensively. So, not a great long-term deal candidate to me. Hope the Flubs do that.

by Adam Reynolds on Nov 4, 2010 12:26 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

He had a 3.9 WAR last year.

With a .379 wOBA. Also, a .356 OBP isn’t bad, it’s just not the .385 range Dunn usually has.

My first thought is where did his walks go?

He made a conscious change to his approach this year, as an experiment, to see whether he’d be more successful by expanding his zone a bit.

The early verdict is a “no,” but I give him props for trying.

by Vlad on Nov 4, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Huh, interesting...

I had not hurt that. Was this his decision or did Rizzo initiate the request?

by Slick1 on Nov 4, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I've read...

…it was a suggestion by the team’s hitting coach, Rick Eckstein. Link.

by Vlad on Nov 4, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a hitting coach I wouldn’t hire.

by Adam Reynolds on Nov 4, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

can't be true

The Nats have exclusive negotiating rights with Dunn until Sunday. The Pirates aren’t allowed to talk to him yet.

dire need of a power bat?

nyet… dire need of dependable starting pitching

by white angus on Nov 4, 2010 8:15 AM EDT reply actions

I’m an Indians fan and I must admit I’m a little jealous at the core talent you guys have (outside of the complete pitching deficit, of course). Tabata, McCutcheon, Alvarez, Walker, even Milledge and Jones can contribute. Plus Pearce, and Bowken perhaps on the way.

by emd2k3 on Nov 4, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

No reason not to get both...

if the front office decides it wants to spend.

by Slick1 on Nov 4, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

If we could sign him for 2 or even 3 years, it would be great. Longer than that is a problem with him and Alverez both projected to be playing 1st by then. Hopefully, if everything goes right, Rendon is healthy and signs with the Pirates and is up in two to three years, moving Pedro over.

by bishopmp1 on Nov 4, 2010 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

Not a problem, of course

Because we can always trade one of them away. Signing Dunn for 2-3 years probably won’t be a competitive offer, anyway. Pedro will be just 25 years old in two years … while I understand concerns that he should be playing first base already, he isn’t going to lose any physical tools to play the position by age 25.

If Dunn can play defense at first base adequately, I love this acquisition. He had a -.3 WAR in his first full year at first base, which is very tolerable, but I don’t think that is a great stat to rely on, given the sample size. If he passed the eye test at first base, I like signing him to a 4 year deal with team options in 2015 and 2016. If we are in a playoff race and he is very productive, then we pick up the expensive options if we think he can still help us. Or, more likely, we do have Rendon ready to be a star, and we trade Dunn in 2013 or 2014 to an AL team in need of a DH for prospects to keep the system going.

by Pghfan987 on Nov 4, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

How old is Dunn?

at the end of 4 years his health might be pretty rickety, given his body type.

by theatrain on Nov 4, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

He turns 31 in 5 days

Which is pretty standard for a guy becoming a free agent.

by Pghfan987 on Nov 4, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Signing Dunn at this point would be throwing money away. The Pirates can’t afford to spend 15m+ on 1 player who offers 4 more wins.

The team has to be built from youth and within.

by emd2k3 on Nov 4, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, I dunno.

We’re going to be devoting a substantial percentage of the roster to cheap 0-3 players for the next few years. Dunn may or may not be the best choice, but I think we have the payroll space available for a veteran in his price range, as long as the deal doesn’t go too far into the future.

by Vlad on Nov 5, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

They can use the money more wisely is my argument.

by emd2k3 on Nov 5, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

You also have to bear in mind...

…that top-tier free agents simply aren’t going to sign with a losing club like us, no matter how much money we offer them.

by Vlad on Nov 5, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

what is more wise?

the bucco’s track record of throwing good money away for mediocre players (presumably they’d rather have 3 or 4 “has-beens or bums” instead of 1 true producer…this quantity over quality has to end…and the time to end it is right NOW.

They have a very cheap and quite talented young core…this is the time you spend money to bring in a highly productive hitter and Starting pitcher.

A bonafide hitting coach, manager and one more high production hitter and a SP who can be counted on as a stopper….this team has the inherent young talent to be competitive in the NL central.

I dont expect this to happen but in my mind it should, the 3 mill or so they save on Duke’s contract along w/ the savings of AKI being long gone…they should be able to add a couple meaningful players.

Having Jones in OF, having Doumit no where in the field, having Walker improve year over year, doing away w/ idiot shift, and having a real manager keeping this teams “HEAD IN THE GAME”…as was done in Balt…the team has a very very real chance to be a BIG SURPRISE…

by Dan Jenkins on Nov 5, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Andrew McCutchens don't grow on trees

The Pirates need to supplement their talent. I think adding someone like Dunn for a few years makes a lot of sense, then trade him for prospects in a few years, perhaps when Rendon comes up (if indeed we draft him and he makes it to Pittsburgh by 2013.)

by Pghfan987 on Nov 5, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

it’s time to quit the excuses and play to win…they have a real chance to be quite competitive over the next 3 years or so…but they need to change the whole philosophy of quantity over quality plus the thoughts of “wins dont matter right now”…their core position players are here NOW.

by Dan Jenkins on Nov 5, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

This I agree with...

no more signing players with the intent to trade them at the deadline. No more talk of playing for draft picks. The clock started ticking last season. The core is in Pittsburgh and it needs to be supplemented. Besides, the free agent market is still relatively deflated salary wise so I think the best time for the Pirates to dabble in it is now why the payroll is low. Just as long as they don’t lock themselves into any contracts longer than 2 or 3 years I don’t have a problem with going this route.

by Slick1 on Nov 5, 2010 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

why not?

unless you bring in 2 frontline pitchers this season, and one of the AA guys jumps to the bigs and is lights out, you aren’t gonna compete. It’s OK to bring in guys with the intent of seeing if the team can’t contend, but you gotta have an eye on the trading deadline, if the team is not doing well.

by BurgherKing on Nov 5, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

1 front line sp'er and 1 front line hitter

along w/ a real mgr, a real batting coach, and some “real job competition” for the other starter positions…OLLY, Mcdonald both seem like easy calls…after that Maholm probably starts though he stunk most of last year…Lincoln, Resop,Morton, (Owens preferrably)…the two guys who stand out and WIN the job should get the job.

real coaches, knocking off the terrible base-running and base coaching decisions, having a hitting coach that doesn’t try to turn every lefty into a opposite field slap hitter and allows someone to swing at a first pitch fastball down the middle instead of falling behind 0-1 every AB…that’s all that;s needed to be a pretty good OFFENSIVE team, maybe a hit n run?

The potential is there to be above average offensively…w/ 1 front line starter, the potential is there to be adequate pitching wise (not great but good enough w/ the improved offense).

  JMHO

by Dan Jenkins on Nov 5, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

1. which front line starter are you thinking of, who will make the pirates adequate pitching wise?

2. Offensively, we’ll probably be just below average, but lets say we were average. In that case, you aren’t going to make the post season. Shouldn’t you be thinking of trading those guys for players who are cheaper and controlled for longer, with potential?

by BurgherKing on Nov 5, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The only players...

we should be actively looking to trade at this point are ones whose contracts are set to expire and we have no intention of resigning: Maholm, Duke, Doumit, etc. I don’t think we go into this season and sign, let’s say, Aaron Harang to a really cheap 2 year deal with an affordable 3rd year team option and trade him at the deadline after he has had a better than expected first half but we are 7 games under .500 by the break. That is unless the deal improves the current core, or we get some ridiculous can’t miss prospect offer.

by Slick1 on Nov 5, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

All I meant is...

the intent of bringing in talent is to improve the team, not to trade that player for prospects. If the right offer came through no player on the roster should be untouchable. But the point is, the Pirates need to supplement this core, not the one that is forming for 2017.

by Slick1 on Nov 5, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

fair enough

all I’ll add, though is that they need to keep the 2017 core in mind… not to the exclusion of the current one.

by BurgherKing on Nov 5, 2010 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that

Both can be done…you dont trade your young prospects nor sign anyone to 5-7 year deals…but you have to start bringing in some higher end production…and it cost money but this is the exact supposed plan…

by Dan Jenkins on Nov 5, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, but Dunn’s a very poor choice for the big money. Preferably go with an up-the-middle guy or starting pitcher with that kind of dough.

by Adam Reynolds on Nov 5, 2010 10:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

There is no top-tier up-the-middle player...

…on the FA market this year. Unless you count Jeter, which I don’t.

by Vlad on Nov 6, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he wants a contendor more than anything

he played for a crappy Reds team and crappy Nats team..now he will get on with someone else. Rays or Chisox

Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all

by Rickfansince76 on Nov 4, 2010 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

Rays → v v unlikely…

by BurgherKing on Nov 4, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

I think the Rays would look at the trade market for a 1B, if it came down to it, rather than spend 15Mish money on a bat only 1B

by BurgherKing on Nov 4, 2010 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn seems much more of a OBO guy. He will take the money imo. Luckily, the big spenders are also usually the contenders.
