Non tender/declined options/MiL FA wish list

Since there were so many threads going up for individual players, I thought it might be useful to start one consolidated thread for players you think who it might be worth picking up from the non-tender heap around the leagues. Of the ones I've seen who were non-tendered/have declared minor league free agency, here are some guys who might be worth following:

Jay Sborz: Link

Dan Wheeler: His being a Type A FA messes things up, unfortunately. (He'll probably cost in the Octavio Dotel range, maybe a little less) Stats

Willy Aybar: Stats Good utility guy, esp if the FO is interested in moving Walker to 3B, with a slot in 2B.

Russell Branyan: If they decide to look outside for 1B help, this seems the best option. Should be available around 4-5M.

That's what I found worth posting from the news I could recall off the top of my head. Add in others you think may be worth a look.

Wheeler's Type A status is only an issue...

…if the Rays offer him arb. Which they probably won’t, if they were worried about the cost of his option.

If you want a RP, Saito is interesting.

yeah, missed Saito

both Wheeler and Saito should be great, if we can convince them to come here.

Not Octavio Dotel’s biggest fan, but I’d consider bringing him back.

I'd bring in LaRoche

If he’s open to making about what he made last season. Good defense and dependable numbers every season, just don’t expect him to bat any higher than 6th.

Obviously it wouldn’t be a popular move.

I agree ...

the Pirates have far worse options than LaRoche.

He’s a mid-range player. If the price is right, the Pirates should at least consider it.

Then let Jones, Bowker and all compete for RF.

Is Branyan any better in the field than Garrett Jones? Not sure that’s an upgrade there.

by emd2k3 on Nov 4, 2010 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

well, he’s had an OPS above .800 each of the last 3 years. With PNC’s short porch, I’d say he stands a decent chance of doing that again- remember he played in Seattle 1.5 of the last 3.

However, the glut we already have with Bowker/Doumit et al, is a strong argument against a FA 1B, Adam Laroche or Branyan. I just mentioned him as someone worth looking at because the bat is def better.

Is Branyan any better in the field than Garrett Jones?

Doubt it. Probably worse, if anything.

That said, as long as he’s healthy, he’d probably be a substantial offensive upgrade on Jones.

by Vlad on Nov 5, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

other than HRs, how is branyan better than Jones?

the only BIG difference between the two guys looks to be salary

by white angus on Nov 5, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Jones is basically a replacement-level 1B.

Branyan’s big edges offensively are in HR and BB.

Though to use Branyan to best advantage, he should be deployed as part of a platoon.

I just think the PIrates would be better suited to spend $$ on pitching.

by emd2k3 on Nov 5, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree with emd2k3

its not that im slamming branyan, nor am i blasting jones. i think they are similar production wise, neither are good fielders, but jones is about $5MM less.

by white angus on Nov 5, 2010 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

i think they are similar production wise

On offense over the last two years, Branyan has been worth about 15 runs more on offense than Jones, in comparable playing time.

He’s got the sporadic back problems. He’s fun to watch though.

by ol Pete on Nov 6, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

Grip it and rip it.

by Vlad on Nov 6, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s true. However, pitching is a bigger need, at least in my opinion.

defense!

Personally, I would bring in Kotchman, on a minor league contract, and have him platoon with Pearce. I think that there is just enough upside, if healthy, for us to justify his left handed stick. His defense is always very good. Also, I may be one of the few remaining who believe that Pearce should be on the team. Before he got hurt, he was consistently stroking the ball and making game changing defensive plays. You just need to read some of the game summaries during those weeks.

I also think that bringing a Dave Lopes on to the coaching staff could help Walker as a second baseman. The guy is getting a bit of grief for his defense, but may just need to be coached a bit. He is certainly athletic enough.

Short is the position that I would invest my premier trade chips in. No reason to get an aging vet with nobody ready in our minor leagues ready to go. Lowrie fits the bill for me.

Finally, call Toronto and get one of their catchers! They just signed Oliva.

Pearce

I know that a lot of people here think Pearce should be on the team, myself included. Kotchman, I don’t agree on, which is why I didn’t put him in the list. He is a solid bet to do better than his 616 OPS this past year, but I don’t think he’ll get that much better ever, really.

Lowrie, unfortunately, will be expensive. I’d get him in a heartbeat if we can trade a fringe prospect and a ML reliever for him, but I don’t think that’s going to cut it.

Catchers? Snyder/Doumit/Kratz? (I know Kratz isnt a Bucco right now, but I got a feeling he will be!)

If you’re thinking of Arencibia/D’Arnaud, I don’t think it’s happening. It’d be cool to have D’Arnaud in the system though, and they’ll hopefully do better than the last pair of brothers on the Pirates team

by BurgherKing on Nov 4, 2010 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Olivo

apparently the Blue Jays declined his option. I assume they are gonna offer him arb? MLBTR seems to assume they will and that he will or has already declined and that the TBJs will get a pick when he signs.

by BurgherKing on Nov 5, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

kotchman? seriously?

cant you find a 1Bman thats plays reasonable defense yet can hit just a little? this would be like signing Mientkiewicz part deux.

by white angus on Nov 5, 2010 8:23 AM EDT reply actions

I think you can argue...

…that Dougie Ballgame was a better choice, in that he could at least play third base, too.

by Vlad on Nov 5, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Kotchman ...

if you are looking at him as a starter, you are spot on.

If you are looking at him as an occasional starter, defensive replacement and pinch hitter, I actually think he’d help the Pirates.
