Now here's a temporary First Baseman!
Why not Russell Branyan?
He's a lefty, a free agent, with power, who made 1.5 million last year. With our short right field why wouldn't we take a shot on a guy like this? He's absolute bargain basement power at first base. Sure he has always been an injury risk, BUT if the FO want to generate a little excitement for 2011 this is the kind of guys they COULD sign.
Make Jones your everyday RF, cycle Diaz in RF for matchups and cycle Jones to 1B once in a while to spell Branyan.

Naw id pass
Branyan’s back is shot. Plus he is way past his prime. Injury concerns + age = not worthy of a roster spot. There is a reason why he is not signed yet. Personally i would like Pearce to get a long look before we just give up on him totally.
I second that
let the younger guys ie Bowker, Pierce, Presley have a shot before rolling in the retreads
Not like Branyon will take us to the Series.

I think we had this talk last year and most weren't very positive about it.
IIRC, Smizik thought he would be a good acquisition.

What about....
Nick Johnson, coming off of a injury season where he didnt play much which means we could get him cheap, here are his projected stats for what they are worth (From Bill James)
G PA H HR R RBI SB BB% K% ISO BABIP AVG OBP SLG wOBA wRC+
98 415 89 10 53 47 2 18.8 % 22.0 % .163 .312 .264 .411 .427 .374 135
I wouldn't mind Johnson...
but I don’t think he wants to play here. I thought I read the Rays were talking to him.
