ML Roster in 2013

Disclaimer before you read this:
I am doing this for fun.  It is the off-season and as a Pirates fan, there is not a whole lot to talk about right now.  I wanted to take a look ahead at 2013 and see what the line-up may potentially look like.  I am assuming the Pirates will draft Anthony Rendon.  I have used only Rendon + players already in the system.  I expect that some people will disagree with this and that's okay.  This is meant for a discussion starter.

LF Jose Tabata
CF Andrew McCutchen
3B Anthony Rendon
1B Pedro Alvarez
RF Andrew Lambo
2B Neil Walker
Tony Sanchez
SS Chase D'Arnaud

Bench:
OF Starling Marte
OF Alex Presley/Gorkys Hernandez
Eric Fryer
IF Pedro Ciriaco/Jordy Mercer
IF/OF Matthew Hague

1   Jameson Taillon (R)
2   Brad Lincoln (R)
3   Donnie Veal (L)
4   Bryan Morris (R)
5   Rudy Owens(L)

LR       Jeff Locke (L)
MR      Mike Crotta (R)
MR      Kevin Hart (R)
LOOGY   Anthony Watson (L)
SU      Daniel Moskos (L)
SU      Victor Black (R)
CL      Evan Meek (R)

Other noteworthy pitchers who may make an appearance in 2013:
Justin Wilson (L), Nathan Baker (L), Stetson Allie (R), , Diego Moreno (R)

boy, are you an optimist

one of the phenomenal things about this roster is that if it happened, we wouldnt need to make one single move on the open market between now and then for players who would be here in 2013.

Allie and Taillon are both extremely optimistic. Allie more so.

Veal- I’d love to be wrong but I dont see Veal in the rotation.

by BurgherKing on Dec 16, 2010 8:12 PM EST reply actions

I dont think Taillon is that optimistic

i think he will be up end of 2012 if all goes well

by BigB2323 on Dec 16, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Taillon might be up by June 2013

i doubt they start his clock in the last month of 2012, unless he shows he’s overwhelmingly ready for MLB

by BurgherKing on Dec 16, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think a September call up goes against the arb clock. I think your clock starts when you make the 25 man roster and in September with expanded rosters, you don’t need to be added to the 25 man. That’s my understanding, at least.

by Dorn on Dec 17, 2010 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

i could be wrong

my understanding was that your clock starts when you play in the big leagues, and Sept time does count against your ML service time even if you are not on the 25 man.

I m not very clear on these aspects though, so you ccould be right…

by BurgherKing on Dec 17, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

i believe major league service time is major league service time

adding to the 40man is different, but the same… wheres Vlad when ya need him? hes probably almost finished pulling out his hair after the overbay signing, so he should chime in on this asap.

by white angus on Dec 17, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

You are correct

If you are on the MLB roster, whether 25 man or 40 man in September, you accumulate service time.

The wrinkle that Dorn might be remembering is that you don’t need to use an option for a September call up.

by MarkInDallas on Dec 17, 2010 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like I’m wrong. Posey was called up at the end of 2009 and they still have him listed as only having .033 MLB service time, obviously not including this year’s time.

I could’ve sworn I read Keith Law or Callis say that it didn’t count.

by Dorn on Dec 17, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, that is why the best prospects of the Pirates, like Tabata and Alvarez will not be given September call ups. It means they have to wait and extra month the next year to call them up for good.

Walker being given a call up in 2009 was an indication that they didn’t really think he would be ready near the start of 2010.

by MarkInDallas on Dec 17, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Pencil in Jeff Locke for that 2013 rotation. Also pencil in us getting a FA SS. If the rest of the team is set the way it is, we should have the money to make a move at the SS position to improve this team, we could do much better than D"Arnaud

by C Shint on Dec 16, 2010 8:15 PM EST reply actions

I believe Marte will be more useful than a 4th/5th outfielder.

Honest question: What happened to Hanrahan in this scenario? Did he get traded?

Just a guess, but isn’t he FA-eligible by then?

According to Cot's

Hanrahan’s 6th year would be 2013. So, chances are he’d be traded in 2012.

by MarkInDallas on Dec 16, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

no

he isnt arb eligible yet, so 2013 should be his final year of arb eligibility…

I doubt either Meek or Hanrahan are Pirates beyond 2011…

by BurgherKing on Dec 16, 2010 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

Any speculation as to which team he goes to and for whom?

Just kidding…. :-)

Minnesota Twins

for this kid, I’m not sure if you’ve heard of him…Miguel Sano.

I hope you all realize, I jest.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

for real though

how about still the Twins from Tsuyoshi Nishioka

He’s an older (26) typical Japanese hitter (great contact, little power) who may be pushed out by Sano.

I’m just thankful you didn’t say Lars Anderson…

i was going to

but i’m kind of sick of even seeing his name. I may jump off the highest of the blue ridge mountains if he would ever join the pirates at this point. (just moved to VA, so I’m trying to get my Bucco fix from afar)

for Dee Gordon… and guess who plugs into that 2013 lineup as SS! :-)

In response

BK – A lot of people are expecting Taillon up in 2013, perhaps not at the beginning of the season though. Allie could be up at that point if the Pirates decide to make him a reliever as many feel will suit him best.

C Shint – I could also see Locke in the rotation, but I truly think he would be better in a LR/SS position.

Gorilla – We’ll agree to disagree on Marte. I don’t know that his offense will be good enough. The Pirates will need power from RF with Cutch and Tabata locked into CF and LF respectively. I like this article on Marte: http://bucsprospects.com/2010/11/18/starling-marte-part-of-the-core-or-future-trade-bait/ As for Hanrahan, I see him being traded.

Perhaps I am reading it wrong but...

if you are saying Owens as #1 starter, I would be surprised if that ends up the case. Many have talked of Owens being more likely a 4th/5th starter since he is mostly finesse. I hope they are wrong about that, but from the research I’ve done on the topic, Owens as a #1 starter would be an amazing feat for him.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

see

Tom Glavine, and ask him about being a finesse lefty. Also, to counter your comment above, Jeff Locke has great stuff and made a smooth transitions from A to AA, which is generally the hardest transition.

by C Shint on Dec 16, 2010 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

but for every Tom Glavine

there are 30 other finesse lefty’s who never made it as more than a fringe starter or worse. We don’t disagree about Locke. I am simply hoping that even with those skills he is relegated to LR/SS. That would be a nice problem to have.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

its also

a stupid problem to have, id rather see Lincoln in the pen than Locke. Also, why do always project for the lowest of our prospects, maybe we finally hit a winner with a guy like Owens or Locke and they out perform their projections

by C Shint on Dec 16, 2010 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

for me

20 years of experience shows that we shouldn’t expect much out of our prospects. terrible, i know, but also true.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:53 PM EST up reply actions

“See Tom Glavine and ask him about being a finesse lefty.” Is this like an interview assignment? What do I get to do?

on the probability of a lefty finesse pitcher being more than a #4 starter haha.

well there are exceptions to the stereotypes that people like to forget about. how about this one for everyone in terms of our prospects, plan for the worst, hope for the best.

by C Shint on Dec 16, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i suppose

that is the way we should look at it. it’s tough to have your heart broken year in and year out by the Pirates.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

Im not saying Owens is going to be a "ACE"

but out of all the pitching coming up he’s going to be the best one until Taillon arrives and become the true ACE of the staff, the Pirates dont have one of those right now in my opinion, but i think Owens, Morris, Locke, Wilson will all be very good starters in the bigs

by BigB2323 on Dec 16, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

Fair point

I can jump on board with that. The future Paul Maholm.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Better control, fer sure;

doesn’t seem to get rattled as easily, either. Of course, I still believe that Maholm’s been dealing with nagging injury issues.

My heros have always been Steelers...

by wozzle on Dec 17, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think Ohlendorf and McDonald will both be in the 2013 rotation.

Taillon will probably be brought up in 2013 unless he develops even faster than people think he will.

Allie will probably not be up in 2013, I’d guess.

I’m hopeful that at least one of the 2009 HS RHP draftees will distinguish themselves and be ready in 2013, but who knows who that will be.

I would guess that Brad Lincoln will not be in the rotation. I don’t have high hopes for him.

by MarkInDallas on Dec 16, 2010 8:34 PM EST reply actions

I still think that optimistic thinking for Taillon is mid 2014, not ’13. But thats all speculation that none of us but Taillon can control.

I agree with your thoughts on Lincoln though

by C Shint on Dec 16, 2010 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

I could get on board with

Taillon not being ready yet and Locke replacing Lincoln. I guess I’m mind-warped on Lincoln because of all the hype on him this year. He does have a NAST-E curve. I’m hopeful he regains form.

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Locke has a nasty curve too. As you are high on Lincoln, Im very high on Locke, I think he has potential to front a rotation

by C Shint on Dec 16, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I like Locke a lot too

by BigB2323 on Dec 16, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

I would say Lincoln needs to do more than regain form.

He needs to be able to throw his curve for strikes on command, which he has not been able to do consistently either in the minors or majors.

There’s no indication that he will be able to put more movement on his fastball, and so I think he’s going to have to “pitch backwards” with the greatest reliance on the curve.

by MarkInDallas on Dec 16, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know about the 2009 HS pitchers because they are still pretty unpolished. If Taillon is considered a long shot for 2013 I would say they are even longer.

by Cainyoudigit on Dec 16, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

On a somewhat unrelated note

This site ranks Tim Alderson as the #10 RH pitching prospect in the league. Hm….behind the times?
http://www.scoutingbook.com/prospects/rhp

by Justin84 on Dec 16, 2010 8:52 PM EST reply actions

i imagine this is at the start of 2010

or before Alderson imploded. His stock had fallen a bit but he was a 20 yr old in AA, and as such doing OK. It wasnt till he came to Pit that his results went downhill… and initially, that could be explained by the fact that he was traded.

by BurgherKing on Dec 16, 2010 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

you're right

it has Harper too…

very interesting… i wonder if he says somewhere why he thinks so, or whether he just looks at preseason lists to do the ranking!

by BurgherKing on Dec 17, 2010 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Use the charts guys,

use the charts….. It shows status by position by year in an easy-to-understand color-coded system. I’m going to update them once we’re relatively sure the off-season moves are done. But here’s the link to the latest version.

Batters:

Pitchers:
http://www.bucsdugout.com/2010/11/3/1792743/and-here-are-the-pitchers-with-footnotes

Maybe someone can get a permanent link to the most recent version in the sidebar (hint, hint, Charlie?)

Why don't you knock it off with them negative vibes?!

by Trogluddite on Dec 16, 2010 8:59 PM EST reply actions

nice work!

I pretty much agree with your position players, Justin84… but I’d project the pitching staff as follows:

1 Jameson Taillon – R
2 Ohlendorf or McDonald – R
3 Jeff Locke – L
4 Bryan Morris – R
5 Rudy Owens – L

LR Brad Lincoln – R
MR Mike Crotta – R
MR Kyle McPherson – R, unless he’s in the rotation (after Ohlendorf/McDonald is traded?)
LOOGY Watson or Veal – L
SU Daniel Moskos – L
SU Victor Black – R
CL Evan Meek – R

GTFO Charlie Morton – R
