Will There Be A Trade This Weekend?

PITTSBURGH - MAY 23: Ryan Doumit #41 of the Pittsburgh Pirates hits a game winning home run in the 10th inning off of Takashi Saito #40 of the Atlanta Braves during the game on May 23, 2010 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

Tim Williams has a weird little idea. Since the Pirates officially signed Kevin Correia right around 5:00 PM on Friday, they don't have to clear a roster spot for him until business starts again on Monday. But why do they need that time? It won't help them learn much of anything about players who might be on the bubble (Chris Leroux? Joe Martinez?). So Tim thinks the Pirates could trade a major-leaguer, perhaps Ryan Doumit, for prospects before then.

It might not mean anything, and even if Tim is right about the Pirates' plan, it's far from certain they'll be able to execute it - the Pirates have wanted to trade Doumit for at least a month, and probably way longer than that. That's no secret. But this is something to keep our eyes on.

As so often is the case with PiratesProspects.....

I think he is correct. Pretty astute observation, in my eyes.

We actually figured that out last night…

Waivers can only be officially requested Monday through Friday…by 3 pm EST. By waiting until after the league offices closed…they CANNOT request waivers until Monday. If a trade wasn’t a possibility, they would have just put the name in during the day yesterday.

That's why I started the thread

I figured it would be easier to collect all the rumors and such in one place

Hopefully a few of you can help me out here

but what are the names of some of the prospects that may be in play if we trade Maholm to any of these teams (i dont follow other teams prospects much). Yankees, Mets, Rangers and Twins

by C Shint on Dec 18, 2010 7:37 PM EST reply actions

I think we'll all be disappointed ...

that it’s not a trade.

But I suspect Martinez or Leroux (in that order) will go.

by Bernie6 on Dec 18, 2010 8:06 PM EST reply actions

It’s not that there WILL be a trade. Just that there is potential for one. We won’t find out about a trade…unless it occurs.

by Thunder on Dec 18, 2010 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I think the most likely scenario here is that Tim is right but nothing happens anyway.

Off topic mostly, but . . .

. . . it seems pretty clear from the discussion on the PBC Blog that somebody other than Dejan will need to cover any trade that happens. It sounds like he’s getting some sort of promotion and won’t be continuing on the Pirates beat.

by WTM on Dec 18, 2010 10:54 PM EST reply actions

really?….he’s really good at what he does…….thought he just had some off days saved up, what gives everyone this thought?

by Danatural08 on Dec 18, 2010 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

A promotion?? About the only promotion possible in the sports dept. would be to become an editor.

Could be

All he’s said is that he’s not leaving the PG and that he’d remain involved with PG+.

by biggyv on Dec 18, 2010 11:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

There’ve been a number of comments in the thread speculating that he won’t continue as the beat writer. He denied that he’s leaving the PG, but he didn’t deny that. He said he’s going to put his heart and soul into PG+, which makes me think he’s going to run the whole thing or something like that.

by WTM on Dec 18, 2010 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting...

with Finder leaving. Is there an obvious candidate to replace him?? Someone from outside the PG, perhaps??

by Thunder on Dec 19, 2010 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

Seems likely. Just as well Finder left. He certainly wasn’t up to it.

by WTM on Dec 19, 2010 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

well, thats unfortunate

from a Pirate fan perspective… Dejan did a phenomenal job, and without him, there is no good reason to check the PG at all

When Dejan’s not around, I’ll check Jenifer Langosch’s blog before I check the PBC Blog. That says a lot. Lately, I hardly look at the PG at all.

by WTM on Dec 19, 2010 8:21 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly

I’ve stopped checking the PG for Dejan’s reporting a while ago. His axe-grinding got to be too much. BD is the first place I come for news. If something happens, one of you schmucks is pretty quick to get a Fanpost up about it!

Not a schmuck

but I’d like to thank all those who are. As a Pirate fan who lived in NY metro area most of my life and am now spending my retirement in Maine (I know its perverse) thanks to all of you who contribute. Even Pirate Roberto.

I feel like his reporting is no longer objective. BucsDugout, PiratesProspects, and WTMs site really are the best sources of Pirates news on the planet.

I only get my Pirates news here. Props to Charlie for such a great Blog and Thank you FrankD for switching to SBNation so I could find this place.

40 man roster

What is our current status of our 40 man roster? With the signings, so we have to get rid of a body asap?

by BrianO' on Dec 19, 2010 2:04 AM EST reply actions

We have to remove one person Monday to make room for Kevin Correria

As of 2:30 eastern...

the official website still lists 41 players on the 40-man roster.
