Hideki Okajima non-tenedered
According to mlbtraderumors, Hideki Okajima was non-tendered today by the Red Sox. Could we be looking at the 2011 version of Javy Lopez? He obviously struggled this past year, but his peripheral numbers with the Red Sox (K/9, BB/9, etc.) are better than what Lopez put up even during his good Boston years. I admit to not knowing about potential injury issues, but this seems like a path that should be contemplated.

looks like jenks was non-tendered
as was our old friend d.j. carrasco

Hm, surprising. Wouldn’t mind having him back for his option price, if he’s amenable.
Guess Towers doesn’t like him as much as the old regime did.
They just need to explain that he had to be sacrificed to make Crosby and Church not be here any more. Should be understandable.
i’m almost positive carrasco asked to be traded, which doesn’t make it seem likely he’d come back. too bad, because i’d be happy with it.
If he goes on waivers, the Pirates can claim him whether he wants them to or not.

He didn’t exactly ask, per se, but he made it known that he’d be just fine with it if we sent him to a contender, because he wanted an opportunity to play in the postseason. Link.
At which point, we sent him to a 97-loss club that couldn’t see the playoffs through a telescope. Probably didn’t build much goodwill with him on the back of that move.
Why not promise this time to send him to a contender
then send him to a bottom dwelling team again… oh the hilarity!

are you talking to me?
coz i m missing how your post is a reply to mine… i said he wudnt want to be here
Well...if the Pirates...
didn’t want to pay Capps $3M last year…they sure the hell aren’t going to pay Jenks what he wants…which was $7.5M last season…and his peripherals were actually better in 2010 than they were in 2009.
We won’t be buying low on Jenks…I’m guessing he could have gotten $9-10M in arbitration…so he’s not going to sign for $3M. Someone will show him the money.
He'll look to close ...
not be the 7th inning guy for a bad team.
Jenks or Okajima?
Who is to say Jenks wouldn’t be our closer? Not like that position is set in stone for us…
Jenks!
But its not cost independent. If he signs a 4M deal, I wouldnt mind having him. Prime trade bait!
Jenks
NH would never pay what it would take to bring in Jenks as a closer.
And is he really better than JH or EM?
I’m not sure. But he’s definitely not worth what he’ll cost.
Also . . .
Minor issue, but at this point Hammerhead and Meek have both earned the right to be considered 8th/9th inning guys. Bringing in another closer is a slap in the face to two of our best most reliable players.
I’m not saying that’s a reason not to do it, but it’s just creating another unnecessary problem.
I'm not them, but if I were...
I’d recognize it’s ok to have more than 2 good bullpen pitchers on a team, and I’d be happy when it’s my team because then I don’t have to throw every single night if we’re close. Of course, I’d also want a fair shot to be “The man” for the 9th inning.
Right
Not so much an issue of having more than two good BP pitchers. I was thinking more of the fact that Meek & Hanrahan held down the “less-glamourous” positions when Capps was our set-in-stone closer, despite the fact that frequently they were pitching much better than him. Now that they’ve proved their worth and worked their way up the totem pole, bringing in a guy like Jenks might be seen as a slap in the face.
Not that kind of stuff that fans or statisticians care about, but the players do, and I’m in favor of not pissing off the players any more than necessary.
I don't know...
that Meek and Hanrahan would call signing Jenks as a closer a slap in the face. The man has only had 167 saves in the last 5 years. It wouldn’t be like bringing in a…let’s say…Hideki Okajima…who has had 47 saves in his career…to be a closer. Those 47 saves are split between 6 with the Red Sox in 4 seasons…and 41 (25 in one season) in 11 seasons in Japan.
The way to approach closers is what NH did last year. Find a cheap guy, let him get some almighty saves, and trade him for more than he’s worth. Let other teams pay ridiculous amounts for an overrated stat, which is what somebody will do with Jenks. It’s like paying for designer clothes.

Hideki Okajima
is a tough call for next year. It depends on his health. Can he rebound after an off year and going on 35? Or is he just about ready to completely fall apart?
A healthy Okajima would be a useful addition to the ’pen-and at the right price.
sign him
I would like to sigh Ojajima. I have posted on this before as it’s been expeced that the Sox would release him. He’s hard to hit the 1-2 time you see him and being new to the NL Central he would face people who haven’t seen him. I think he’s a good 7th inning option for a new team and a much better option than Chan Ho.
Yinzers uber alles
Tony Gwynn (decent WAR), DJ Carrasco, and Dotel are good non-tenders. Scott Hairston is much better than Francoeur, at least, if we wanted an outfielder for some reason.

Sign Dotel and trade him back to Coletti in July!

We could use an Ethan Martin and Billingsley type of package.

Gwynn is intriguing, but he doesn’t fit here. McCutchen isn’t going to move to a corner, and Gwynn doesn’t have a good bat if you’re going to have him on the bench.

+1
The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.
i dont think Sr. would have to lose weight to hit better than Jr.
just gotta show up… even after chemo treatments.
The Red Sox
Have also non-tendered Tayloy Buccholz and Andrew Miller. Could be solid pickups for the patented “build value + flip to Ned Colletti” move.
