Through MLBTR, Dejan is reporting that the Pirates are going to non-tender Lastings Milledge. I have to say, I'm somewhat surprised. While the Nyjer/Burnett for Hanrahan trade would be fair at the players' current values, it would have really nice if we'd been able to turn Lastings back into the former top-prospect he used to be. Not even putting up world-beating numbers, but being a solid #4 OF would have been a cherry on top.
That being said, however, I ultimately don't think it's going to be that big of a deal. The guy was good off and on, but with our RF situation being as crowded as it was, he wasn't going to get much playing time there, and certainly not enough to get consistent ABs. He also didn't have the range to cover center or LF in PNC Park. I think Bowker/Pearce/Jones/Presley/Whoever will do a perfectly fine job covering his 300ish ABs, and at a lower cost as well. I guess this helps solve some of the logjam. Although, that being said, it does make you wonder if it means something about an upcoming move (signing a real RF) or if it's just the front office moving on from a player who's underperformed for 2 seasons now.
