Pirates Get Cesar Valdez From Diamondbacks

HOUSTON - MAY 03: Pitcher Cesar Valdez #43 of the Arizona Diamondbacks throws against the Houston Astros in the first inning at Minute Maid Park on May 3, 2010 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images)

The Pirates completed the Zach Duke trade by receiving Cesar Valdez from the Diamondbacks. Valdez is a 25-year-old starting pitcher who, despite some large strikeout and walk totals, apparently doesn't throw particularly hard (he pitched briefly for the Diamondbacks this year, and Fangraphs has his average fastball coming in at 88.6 MPH). He does keep the ball on the ground, so maybe the Pirates feel there's some upside here if they move him to the bullpen, or maybe they just needed another Virgil Vasquez type. Either way, we were told the Pirates would be getting a "mid-level prospect" in exchange for Duke, but that appears to have been somewhat generous.

Heh.

My Rule 5 roundup got out the door first – you owe me a Coke.

I really think Valdez is VV-type, “Ohgodohgod what if everybody gets hurt?” sort of depth.

Yep. Unless they feel like he’s going to add 3 MPH if they put him in the bullpen, which I kind of doubt.

Valdez

i am sort of pleased with the return, considering the position they were in with duke. going into 2010 he had some pretty good positives. i have read reports of his sinker being a 90-92 offering, with a plus changup. FWIW B.A. had him having the best curve and changeup in the d’backs system going into 2010.

Did I do the math wrong?

Pretty sure Rodriguez is 25 and turns 26, not 27 in a few days.

Pretty significant age difference with regards to a prospect.

Well

If he’s 25 now, then he’ll definitely turn 26 next. Bill James had a whole writeup on this in one of the early Abstracts.

It seems like the idea is to collect

about 10 mediocre starting pitchers and hope that 5 of them put together better-than-average years.
