Around SBN: My First Fight: Diego Sanchez

At $550K, I wish we'd taken him on too! That is a great deal, and Brian Sabean needs to give himself a bit of a kick, for not managing to resign him, even after non-tendering him. Although, in fairness, if he had been resigned, Sabean would have found a way to grossly overpay...

Those are bad numbers for a 1B-only…no thanks.

I hope everyone goes onto Fangraphs when they write on this to bash the annoying Dave Cameron, who ripped on the Mets’ imposing Fernando Tatis/Daniel Murphy platoon while probably acting like having Kotchman/Garko at the position is the best thing since sliced bread.

I thought Seattle was having a great offseason, but after Kotchman, Byrnes, and Garko I’d favor the Rangers there.

Those aren't bad numbers for a 1B, at that price.

Career 109 OPS+. The M’s get approximately league-average production from him for only a little over the minimum. He’s a good signing given their needs, though re-upping with Branyan would’ve been better IMO unless his back is totally shot.

Look at the 2010 CHONES for both sets of players. They aren’t gospel or anything, but…

Kotchman: .265/.333/.401 (1 offense, +6 defense)
Garko: .268/.343/.438 (8 offense, -2 defense)

Murphy: .274/.328/.429 (-4 offense, +1 defense)
Tatis: .262/.333/.431 (-2 offense, +1 defense)

Both Seattle players project to be above average, and both New York players project to be below average. Additionally, Tatis (the better of NY’s 1Bs) is in his late 30s, and a significant risk to decline unexpectedly at any time.

It’s not a huge edge, but with the Mariners likely to be in a tough divisional fight this year, every extra win counts.

Kotchman and Murphy have the same Chone projected wOBA, so Murphy gets -4 compared to Kotchman’s 1 just because of the league and park difference then?

But I see that the projected stats are in a neutral league/park context. Then that is confusing.

It's my undertstanding...

…per this page, that the linear weights are neutral-context, but that the raw stat lines are not.

I'm surpised they didn't resign Branyan...

or that nobody has for that matter. Like you said, the back must be a lot worse than I orginally thought.

Would he play every day?

Garko’s been very good against lefties.
