Bryce Harper, not quite the second coming, yet. I think the most interesting comment is that he isn't guaranteed to stay behind the plate.

Cool article...

Lots and lots of question marks around this kid. Like I’ve said other places let see how he performs in JUCO before annointing the Lebron of baseball. I’ve got to be honest, as things stand right now, I wouldn’t take him at #2.

As it stands right now, I’d take him at 2, although I might prefer the righty from LSU, Ranaudo. But Harper has a nice-looking swing. The biggest problem with either is that they are Boras clients, which most likely means 6 seasons with us and they’re gone (or 5 if we trade them at the end). But we have to worry about getting enough talent first to be competitive first instead of that stuff, IMO.

Better six seasons of quality play than none...

…if we take a less-worthy player and he becomes a bust.

Take the best available player, and cross the Boras bridge when you come to it.

Of course he's not guaranteed to stay behind the plate.

He’s 17. The only things guaranteed at that age are situationally-inappropriate boners.

I didn’t know that his current conference was a wood bat league. That may suppress his numbers this year somewhat, but in the long run it’s a very shrewd move.

+1 on the boner comment!!!

I didn’t know it was wood bat either til reading this. His coach must have an awful lot of confidence in him. It’s quite a gamble they took. If his numbers aren’t anything special and he ends up repeating JUCO I’m not sure he’ll be a lot better of than he would have been if he stayed in HS and destroyed less talented pitchers.

And after I'm done with my last post...

I went to Baseball America and find out that Harper went 2-4 on Sunday with a HR. This aritcle presents a more positive picture.

I think 3rd base will be his spot

We can move Pedro to first when he’s ready (if he’s ready) and Andy LaRoche will be at 2nd (hopefully). Then we can allow one of Jones, Tabata, or Harper fail, and our offense is very solid from the leadoff until about 7th, where we have Cedeno, and maybe Doumit’s replacement or Andy LaRoche (if he stays mediocre).

So basically, what I’m trying to say is, TAKE HIM! If he’s not there, Jameson Taillon is beast.

Boy...

if Alvarez isn’t ready by the time Harper is we are in big trouble. Also, as awesome as Taillon looks I just don’t see NH taking a HS pitcher in the 1st round given their failure rate. That’s the same reason I don’t think we take Ranaudo unless he takes his game to another level this year and does put too many more innings on his arm. I think we go position player again. If Harper rakes in JUCO I think we’ll take him. If not we’ll have to keep our eye on names like Colon, Brentz, Cox, Washington and the like.
