Frank Coonelly Explains "Dynasty" Comment
The Pirate's President picked up the phone to call 93.7 The Fan this afternoon to explain yesterday's comments to players wherein he used the word "dynasty" to describe his expectations for the current talent base's future with the franchise. I was admittedly distracted during the lengthy interview, but to my ears he Coonelly stated the obvious: that he was not predicting a dynasty for the Pirates.
The interview is well worth a listen. Here is the link.

That sure got awkward at the beginning when Coonelly tried to say he didn’t say it, then Cook said he heard it on TV.
The comment itself was kind of stupid, but I think everyone kind of overreacted to it, and Coonelly really didn’t need to try to explain himself. Sometimes it’s better to just let it go.
Agreed.
I guess the really dumb thing was going on a radio show with Vinnie and Cook.

Vinnie has to be the biggest moron on sports talk radio. He used to have a show in Seattle and I don’t think I ever heard him say anything interesting. He’s pretty much the radio equivalent to Ron Cook, so it’s funny that they’re paired up like that.
Actually...
I kind of like Vinnie. He seems genuinie and he likes to talk baseball and as someone who hasn’t endured what we have as Pirates fans, he offers a view that isn’t automatically dire. I’ve never been a big Ron Cook guy, but he is much better now that he has an on-air partner than when he was flying solo on weekends on KDKA-AM, before they abandoned sports.
I prefer Stan and Guy, but you can’t pick up the signal beyond a 15 miles radius from town. A microwave or hair dryer turned on in Wilkinsburg will kill the signal altogether.
Overall, I think the new station is pretty good. Siebel & Starkey have rendered The Drive on ESPN non-existent to me – thankfully, though Siebel still fall back into big radio voice mode (instead of substance) sometimes. The morning show can has its ups and downs, but Colony is great and Burton is much better since someone told him that it was condescending to laugh at loud at every sarcastic comment. Even Alexander is trending towards the good, such as it is.
Good day.
I usually go with Stan and Guy in the mid morning followed by Madden in the afternoon. I’m glad Colony has work now, as I think he is better than anyone on the Drive.

Not a big fan of Vinnie either but I have to say that after listening to the interview Coonelly was the one who came off sounding like the biggest moron.
The evening Fan host said something to the affect that Coonelly reflects stupidity at the highest level of the Pirate organization after this latest episode……first being dumb enough to use the word dynasty, then being so thin skinned that he actually called TheFan from Bradenton to “clarify” his comments, then first denying he said it, and then when confronted that there was a tape, saying he didn’t remember saying it…..
Yep, he looked like the moron yesterday.
Ron Cook owned him.
Ron Cook is...
To use Rahm Emanuel’s language, “F’n retarded.”
Good for him that he caught Frank Coonelly on a random quote, maybe he can put that on his resume. Because God knows the man can’t write worth a damn. He’s been taken to task for this pile of feces regarding the Steelers and this Stanley Steamer he came up with on the Pens.
I’ll finish my rant with exactly what Cook does in his columns; a five word, one sentence, paragraph.
The guy is a joke.
And after listening to the interview for a second time...
I think you’re using the term “owned” quite liberally. I won’t argue that Coonelly didn’t look like a jackass by calling up a new sports-talk radio station to defend himself, but all Cook did was make two comments (one legitimate, another in the jag-off type), both of which were answered in a respective and informative matter.
Man, maybe if Coonelly had a little McClatchy in him (calling beat writers up to berate them personally about certain pieces, as he did with Perotto) or Littlefield (way too many examples of weaving crap into gold), then we wouldn’t have to worry about him and Nutting making verbose statements. Oh, the good old days.
All I can say is if Coonelly does his job as well as Ron Cook does his, the Pirates are doomed.

Christ, who gives a shit?
This is the old white guy equivalent of the collective freakout over Milledge’s shoelaces.
I didn't mean...
…old white guys freaking out, I meant yinzers freaking out over a relatively trivial matter involving an old white guy.
It's a psychobilly freakout
Rev. White Guy brings some heat.
"Old white guy"?
Who is this “old white guy” you are referring to anyway?
The only person that thought Milledges shoes were noteworthy that I am aware of was Dejan. I never could understand why he wasted his time and space on his blog for that stuff. Or the Eric Hacker clapper stuff either. Maybe he thought it was funny I don’t know. – I thought it was some of his worst work and far beneath the usual quality of his work.
Coonelly = old white guy.
Old to me, anyway – he was born in ’60, which makes him almost as old as my dad (and five months older than Mike LaValliere).
There were at least a few people upset about the shoelaces – I remember people bitching about it at the bar back at the time.
I just get tired of stupid fake news instead of actual baseball. I’m ten thousand times more interested in talking about a random guy on State College’s roster than I am in the ginned-up fake controversy of the day, be it Milledge’s shoes or exactly what “no more scholarships” means or whether Russell spends enough time bullshitting with guys in the clubhouse or whatever. Jesus Christ. Can we have some actual baseball, please? I’m going crazy here.
Yes—this has seemed like the longest offseason in years, probably because I haven’t followed the offseason news this closely in ages. I’ve been reduced to amusing myself by trying to figure out what minor league games I can travel to, once the season starts. On the bright side, the end is near—Manatees on Tuesday, MLB.tv vs. the Yankees on Wednesday. :-)
Or at least in mid-September, when the Hillcats’ season ended.

I don't think that last paragraph could have been said any better...
Spring training is great because it means beaseball is coming soon, but the flip side of that is all of these manufactured stories. I know there is little action actually going on, so these guys really have to dig for news (or exaggerate any little thing) but it just really grinds my gears.

I’m-a kick your ass at the BD Gathering. ;-)
Free your ass and your mind will follow.
If the entry
does not close with “Good day.,” how do we know if it was Uncle Nate who REALLY posted this?
Free your ass and your mind will follow.
OH DEAR GOD!
my innocent mind!
So many questions.
