Roberto movie

I don't know if anyone has heard about this or if it has already been posted, but Carmelo Anthony is going to, or wants to, make a movie about Roberto Clemente. It was in either SI or ESPN the Mag, just a quick mention in a story about Melo,  but I thought it was pretty interesting. Here's a link to another story about it.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=4089584

I just hope he does a good job with it, if it happens. He just finished a documentary about Mike Tyson, but obviously, Clemente and Tyson aren't even similar people. If it works out, he better do it right. Like my father always said, if Jesus Christ came back and decided he wanted to play right field for the Pirates, we would tell him no and that we're still waiting to see if Roberto comes back.

Eeeek!

Clemente and Tyson in the same sentence! That’s like saying you’re taking a date out for dinner and a colonoscopy.

That's not fair to Jesus

Everyone knows his arm’s only league-average.

Saw the trailer for that Tyson documentary.

Think it was on the “Waltz With Bashir” DVD. It actually looked really interesting.

If the Clemente one is as good, it’ll definitely be worth watching

Phenominal documentary

I never saw Tyson open up & get so emotional about his past. The film was made while he was going through therapy sessions to face his many demons & the director was a close friend. Definitely worth watching.

If that director handles a Clemente film, it will be first class.

I haven’t heard too much about the Tyson film, other than it was making some splashes at Sun Dance, I believe it was. Thought it would interesting to share; I don’t think Melo would take a lazy route with it, especially considering his Puerto Rican background.

Shameless Plug

I don’t know if anyone here even noticed it, but about 5 years ago a good friend of mine (and legit children’s author and published poet) wrote a really nice kid’s book about Roberto. Pretty sure it’s called Clemente; I know the author is Jonah Winter.

I bring it up because it never really got the press or buzz that he or anyone expected; not sure why (he had a signing at Joseph-Beth on the South Side, and my family was the only one to show up), but I think it flew under the radar. But anyway, any of you who want to pass the story of Roberto on to the next generation should take a look.

PS – he also did a couple of great books about the Negro Leagues and Latino pioneers; the guy really likes baseball

Melo.....

Let’s be clear. Melo is involved in financing these films and as such gets and Executive Producer title, but he is in no way involved in making (or directing) the film(s). So it won’t be him to credit or blame if it is good or bad.

The producer is usually the one who puts up the money and has little to do with anything else, so you are correct dt, as far as I know.

by God Loves on Feb 6, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

Correct. On a much smaller scale than what Melo is doing, I’m executive producer for the upcoming album by a band from Phoenix (The Breakup Society, featuring former Post-Gazette music critic Ed Masley), but my contribution is entirely financial. I’ll have nothing to do with the songwriting, music or recording.

You’re all correct, but it is HIS money. If he puts up a million dollars (example) and they get Michael Bay to direct the damn thing, he can take that money back. It’s like donating to a college or something; if you want this money to go to that, they have to listen, otherwise you can pull your donation out. I’m sure he’ll do his homework and have, not some say, but I guess suggestions on who should make it.
