Pirates v. Orioles (first FSN broadcast)

Who else is really excited about tonights game? It'll be the first time I get to see the Pirates in action (I missed the MLB networks broadcast of the Yankees v. Pirates), and I can't wait...I hope the Pirates play alot of our prospects, and try to put them "on show" for us viewers that won't get to see them during the year. I'll post lineups as soon as I know them...I know it's only spring training, but hopefully we go for a win as well.

that's ok

I was about to post my on fanpost, which had the lineups, but saw you beat me to the punch, so I added the lineups here

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

that is a lot of apostrophes at the top of their lineup

And is that the same Cesar that bounced around the pirates a couple of years ago?

by BlindSquirrel on Mar 10, 2010 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

oops

Pitching for the Pirates: Zach Duke, Daniel McCutchen, Vinnie Chulk, Brendan Donnelly and Chris Jakubauskas

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

nice K for duke

I’ve been waiting for a big year from Pie for years now…I’m geussing he’s going to start in AAA again this year?

Why has’nt he put it together yet?

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

He really went after Pie and Iztures both

Nice to see him go after the guys he know cant hurt him with the long ball

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

ouch, another ball over McCutchens head..

who has a better career? McCutchen or Adam Jones?

Jones is a beast…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions

agreed

I think both of them will be the CFs in the All star game for their respective leagues for years to come…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

what happened

Duke started so well, now he lost all the aggresiveness

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 7:13 PM EST reply actions

wow

Dukes summing up his career in 1 inning tonight…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:15 PM EST reply actions

bobble by church

lets another run score easily

by johnnycuff on Mar 10, 2010 7:20 PM EST reply actions

i saw that...

thought it was G Jones at first…then realized he’s DHing

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

finally

anyone have Dukes pitch count? might not be back out…

Alvarez looked good on that in between hop…first ball I’ve seen him field live…for what it’s worth

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:20 PM EST reply actions

He'll be back out

Should be pitching 3 at this point

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Is it just me

or does Doumit look like he put on a few pounds since last year

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions

ya

looks like he put on a few pounds in facial hair alone…

can’t see him having a good year, or being our catcher by the end of the year…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

And by few pounds

I mean in a bad way. Looks out of shape

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

ya

he does look out of shape…looks like he almost blew out a seem in his pants reaching for that outside pitch, and trying to pull it.

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

duke looked much better

7 pitch inning. may have set himself up to come out in the 3rd.

by johnnycuff on Mar 10, 2010 7:32 PM EST reply actions

well my internet is failing approximately every 30 seconds

luckily the game is on mlb network as well. However, it is also at least a half inning behind the mlb.tv broadcast…

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 7:34 PM EST reply actions

nice RBI double for Alvarez

that was about as hard as you can hit a ball…

his stance, swing, and plate discipline remind me so much of Ryan Howard…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:39 PM EST reply actions

looks alot slimmer than I imagined

if he can stay in shape I think he’ll have no problem staying at third…looks like he has some good hands over there with an above average arm. A lack of range will be his downfall…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Doumit : chunky :: Alvarez : slim

We are starting to sound like high school girls

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

haha, I geuss it does sound bad, but..

In my defense, I think it has a direct corrolation with how they may play…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

Alvarez pounds the ball in all directions

He’s a big guy, not a 3b body. He started the game looking awkward at third on two grounders hit to him. Footwork looked a little sloppy. But as the game progressed he got smoother. Strong and accurate arm. He never had to show range, so it ’s tough to tell how well he moves laterally. I was surprised with his performance in the field. He had at least 4 putouts and started a nice 5-4-3 dp.

On the double he hit, he showed good wheels.

by lloyd95 on Mar 11, 2010 8:57 AM EST up reply actions

Plate discipline

ugh, I don’t want him to remind me of Howard

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

I know

he did a nice job of getting to a 2-0 count, but then it looked like he was going to swing at whatever was coming for the next 3 pitches…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

That was the first time

I got to see Alvarez hit live. Man, was I impressed. Beautiful swing, guy looks like a winner. I just got a little more excited for the future. Hopefully they give Tabata and Sanchez some good looks tonight.

by psudynasty on Mar 10, 2010 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

Sanchez for Doumit?

What’re the chances I get to see Sanchez tonight?

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:45 PM EST reply actions

be cool to see a Moskos v Wieters matchup

make Littlefield look even worse than he already does…if that’s possible

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:49 PM EST reply actions

true

Think he’ll ever make it to Pittsburgh? seems like he could be a serviceable reliever? don’t know why they keep pushing him as a starter…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

ya

thats why he was so affective in college…with only 2 pitches thats all hes really suited to do is relief. I’ve heard he has a plus curveball; that with an average to above average fastball…he could be a succesful late innning guy…

I think management keeps thinking he’ll develop a changeup…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

haha

was’nt too encouraging of an outing…way too many walks

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know if that was more mechanics or mental

Outings in ST are so hard to guage. Pitchers often go out looking to work on something. Like last year, Ohlie would go out with an intention of working on his change. I remember him being happy even after he got rocked because he was able to work on the change in game situations.

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

ya, I would'nt put much stock into a ST start..

I just hope he was’nt working on his command, because he had none..

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

i dunno, but

Has anyone see what his velocity has been? looks like he’s throwing harder than usual; in the 90s with his fastball?

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:52 PM EST reply actions

ya me either

I would’ve liked to though while Duke was in the game…a couple more MPH on his fastball would due him a ton of good

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

haha, clubbing one up the middle with bases empty, and 2 outs…classic Doumit.

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

Did anyone see the picture/story from Pirate city this morning?

All of the minor leaguers had their socks up and if their locker was dirty, they were called out on a list.

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:04 PM EST reply actions

did'nt see it...

But heard an interview with someone that said something along the lines of…you don’t like keeping your locker clean, or your socks up; Make it to Pittsburgh, and you can wear them however you want…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

McCutchen

looked really good. That slider is pretty sharp and two seamer has some good tail.

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 8:11 PM EST reply actions

he did look good...

did he always have that overhead windup, or is that something new he’s trying?

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

I seem to recall an article

saying that was an adjustment they had him make when he got here

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

ahh ok

could be something to keep an eye on…maybe Kerrigan sees something that will really help McCutchen

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

in the article

or interview or whatever, he seemed to think it was a good change and liked how his mechanics felt

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Whatever it is

He is working fast and getting poor swings

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

jeez, Alvarez showing off some opposite field power...

almost had a double down the 3rd base line; went foul…then a deep flyout to left

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:18 PM EST reply actions

none the less..

right off the bat I thought it was a sure double, but then realized it was pretty far foul…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

He stung that bal . Not a check swing and it was smoked.

by lloyd95 on Mar 11, 2010 8:59 AM EST up reply actions

NH just mentioned Moss and Church

does this mean that Moss has the inside track on Raynor and DYoung?

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:20 PM EST reply actions

I'd say Church is a lock...

I can’t see Moss making the team, but who knows…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

I like Moss

I think if he’s given another full time duty he can produce, but I think management has given up on him at this point, and I don’t think he’d be a useful bench player…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

it was in reference to

if Clement loses first base, and RF opens up. I think Young’s “ceiling” right now is seen as a bench player. Raynor’s rule five status kind of leaves that an interesting question though…still he’s probably not first in line to immediately take over a starting spot.

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

Right

he said a “Combo of Moss/Church.” I may be looking into this too much, but NH has a tendency to let things slip.

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

I think

he meant as far as if Clement doesn’t seem to fit yet then the immediate backup plan is to try Moss/Church as the starting right fielder, given the interesting circumstances of some other players. If Clement does stick, then perhaps Moss or Church wouldn’t make the bench because there are other players they like better on the bench.

However, I could be wrong. Perhaps they just want the best 25 players, and so therefore Moss and Church are ahead in their minds.

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, forgot about Clement...

I knew there was another player I wanted to see tonight…

What’re my chances of seeing Clement tonight?

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Hart has a better chance of throwing 7 shutout innings

but he also has a better chance of giving up 12 runs in the first inning

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

that’s what I was trying to say, but did’nt know how…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Huntington mentioned stuff..

He does seem to have a pretty big variety of pitches with alot of movement, but I agree. I have yet to see him put anything together…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

between 02-03 Wells had 22 wins, and a 3.40-3.50 ERA…

10-12 wins and a 3.50 ERA out of Hart would be great…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Really good stuff...

really poor command. I think the FO believe’s that Kerrian can work his magic and improve his command. If that turns out to be true Hart could be a very effective pitcher. I personally don’t see it happening and think Hart is better suited for the pen but I would love for me to be wrong. I think McCutchen will be a more effective starter because he is more consisiten but Hart definitely has more upside.

by Slick1 on Mar 10, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Who was saying Doumit looks chunky?

He looks like he’s added about another 10-15 lbs of muscle. Dude looks like a brick shit house. I don’t see any fat. He’s just a big boy.

by Slick1 on Mar 10, 2010 8:25 PM EST reply actions

Yeah not sure about...

the Jim the “Anvil” Neidhardt thing he has gone. That needs to go. Other than that…I think Doumer is going to have a big season this year.

by Slick1 on Mar 10, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Of course...

the wild card is can he stay healthy. I wouldn’t bet the bank on him not being on the DL at some point.

by Slick1 on Mar 10, 2010 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

ya

He has always produced when healthy, but I just see this as another un-healthy DL ridden year, and NH gives up on him…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

and here I was

Thinking that you Jerry were a font of optimism…

by BlindSquirrel on Mar 10, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

haha, for the most part...

Not optimistic about Duke & Doumit though this year…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

McCutchen swinging for the fence there…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:27 PM EST reply actions

Donnelly is hillarious

I heard an interview with him the other day. Funny guy

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:36 PM EST reply actions

I love his mechanics.

Probably another reason why you cant play with him on video games – they cant duplicate that motion.

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

he looks like he’s going to throw the ball 100 mph with every pitch. I haven’t been this entertained with a relief pitcher’s wind up since Mike Fetters.

by Slick1 on Mar 10, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

You guys think

Pedro is planning on wearing 17 in the majors?

by psudynasty on Mar 10, 2010 8:41 PM EST reply actions

I would tend to think 13

Latin American infielder plus big fan of A-rod

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

I'll geuss #24...

13 and 17 would be cool numbers too…

anyone know why Pearce wears 51? that’s the only number that bothers me on the Pirates roster…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not watching anything other than this thread so I may make a gaffe like that every now and then.

by BlindSquirrel on Mar 10, 2010 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Lefty Problems..

Pedro still has a long way to go before he’s going to regularly hit left-handed breaking balls.

by getwonkafied on Mar 10, 2010 9:04 PM EST reply actions

That is why Pedro will be in AAA for 2+ months

by psudynasty on Mar 10, 2010 9:05 PM EST reply actions

I'd take it...

We’re in no position to be picky! Just give me some dang offense! I’m impressed with Garret this spring too…man I hope hes the real deal. That would go a long way to getting us back into contention. Every good team needs a contributor to come out of nowhere.

by psudynasty on Mar 10, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

very true

If Pedro comes into the league, and puts up numbers that mirror Howards I don’t think anyone will be complaining (I won’t atleast). I just think the sooner fans accept were going to see ABs like Alvarrez just had (3 pitch strikeout; chasing out of the zone) the better.

Yea, Jones’ swing this spring suggests he will pick up right where he left out last year…it’s even a bigger plus that he came out of nowhere as you suggested.

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

Can he improve?

can Alvarez improve against lefties at all in AAA or is this something we will see for awhile in the majors? DK talked about Garrett Jones working on letting low and away go < two strikes – maybe that is something they should (or are) working on with Alvarez.

by SpacePirate on Mar 10, 2010 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

hopefully...

I personally think its crazy to think Pedro will hit .300 against major league pitching, but that does’nt mean he can’t hit 30-40 homeruns a year…something the Pirates desperately need. Leave the hitting for average and OBP to guys like McCutchen, Milledge, Tabata, etc..

We need power production from Pedro….

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

my favorite Pirate just checked in at 3rd...

Neil Walker…would be really cool to see him make the team as a Util. guy

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:10 PM EST reply actions

I recall you saying that before.

Did you know Neil / go to school with him?

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

I expect a big year from Gorkys though; although hes done nothing so far to suggest that. I just get that feeling…

I really just wonder what happens if McCutchen, Milledge, and Jones are all having good years in Pittsburgh. Then Tabata, and Hernandez are having great years in AAA…

If Clement locks down the 1st base job it becomes even more interesting…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

you know

those are the issues that great teams sometimes have. We probably shouldn’t worry ourselves too much about having an overload of talent…it’s not really as big of a problem as we sometimes think it is.

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

definetely a good problem to have...

I just think it will be really interesting to see how NH will handle it…

I personally think you try Clement at catcher again with G Jones going to 1st (best suited defensively there) put Gorkys in left, and Tabata in right…Milledge would be the odd man out I geuss…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

no, never knew him or go to school with him...

I did see a few of his games in high school though…he looked really impressive, but I geuss that’s what happens against lesser competition. I don’t believe Western PA has very competitive baseball…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:18 PM EST reply actions

I played with him when I was 15/16

We played a lot of wooden bat tourneys. I don’t know if I ever saw Neil not center a ball. He had the most solid contact of anyone I had ever seen at that level and in college.

by psdeuce on Mar 10, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

that's awesome you played with him...

And yes, I had the same thoughts about him on having solid contact…

I said to myself at the time he would be a MLB star….that’s why I keep holding out that he’s going to go on a tear, but it starts to seem less and less likely…

Like I said though…would be cool to see him as a super Util. guy. Play C, 3B, 2B, OF, and hit .300.

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

nice shot

of Varsho putting in a huge wad of chew…was that Redman?

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 9:21 PM EST reply actions

lol

Tabata showing off some speed….beats out the B-more chop, and then swipes 2nd a couple pitches later

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 10, 2010 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

well

besides weird Duke part of inning, some nice pitching displayed today. Also I think Baltimore is terrible, but, then again, they beat us.

by poorboywilly on Mar 10, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions

I don't think the O's are terrible

They just have the misfortune of playing in the NL East. They’ve got a very strong core.

by lloyd95 on Mar 11, 2010 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

pretty un-eventful game..

Baltimore with 3 runs on 4 hits in the 1st inning, then 0 runs on 1 hit over the next 8 Innings…

G Jones with some really nice ABs
Alvarez with an RBI double, and an ugly strikeout…he impressed me on defense though…
