Pirates at Red Sox

Looks like the weather will be much better today.  This one is televised on NESN for the New Englanders (and mlb.tvers) and is on the radio in Pittsburgh.  Most of the guys that were going to pitch yesterday are set to pitch today, with Brad Lincoln and Vinnie Chulk pushed from today to the recently scheduled "B" game vs. the Orioles at 10 AM EDT tomorrow.  LIneups:

Pirates

  1. Delwyn Young 2B
  2. Andy LaRoche 3B
  3. Garrett Jones DH
  4. Jeff Clement 1B
  5. Lastings Milledge LF
  6. Brandon Moss RF
  7. José Tábata CF
  8. Jason Jaramillo C
  9. Argenis Díaz SS

Pitching:  Paul Maholm, D.J. Carrasco, Jack Taschner, Chris Jakubauskas, Javier Lopez, Jeremy Powell

Red Sox

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury LF
  2. Dustin Pedroia 2B
  3. Víctor Martínez C
  4. Kevin Youkilis 1B
  5. David Ortiz DH
  6. J.D. Drew RF
  7. Adrián Béltre 3B
  8. Mike Cameron CF
  9. Marco Scutaro SS

Pitching:  Clay Buchholz, Jonathan Papelbon, Manny Delcarmen, Boof Bonser, Brian Shouse, Michael Bowden

The Red Sox have a new look lineup, but it sure isn't as formidable as last year.  Basically they trade Bay's bat for Cameron's (downgrade) and I really don't see how Béltre is supposed to be better than Lowell, even at this injury-riddled stage of his career.  Unless Béltre somehow recaptures the magic of that one year.  Surely Ortiz isn't going to come back?  He's pretty old at this point.  He's useful but a shell of what he used to be.  At any rate their rotation should keep them in the running for the AL East yet again.

wow

who knew Buchholz had such a crazy name.

so

yesterday MLB wouldn’t let me listen to the radio, today NESN is experiencing technical difficulties, so no video (yet).

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 1:05 PM EST reply actions

It said ‘tape delay’ on the mlb.com scoreboard. Not sure if that means replayed at the end of the game or after a couple of innings.

Clement base hit top of the second no outs …picked off on a botched bunt by Lastings. Oh dear.

by RDV across the sea on Mar 13, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

nah

sounds like I’m listening on time…I think they mean “really quiet audio feed and really loud commercials are playing” instead of “tape delay”

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think

NESN is running it at 7PM on MLB network.

I would like to appologize to anyone listening to Don and Remy right now.

They don’t know how to do play by play when there’s no video.

Trust me

Not much better with video. Orsillo is OK, but Remy . . . ugh.

Peter Abraham of the Globe:

"I can try and act like Jerry Remy if you want. Send me $100 and I’ll sell you my scorecard and a beer. "

Did you see how he’s selling “season passes” for his bar? For $500, you’re guaranteed a table during Red Sox games. You can buy a season ticket for Bucs games for less than that — inside the stadium and everything!

by biggyv on Mar 13, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Apparently it's a corporate thing.

At least it comes with $2000 dollars in overpriced food credits. Not that bad if you’re in the neighborhood.

Scutaro out

Ellsbury strikes out on check swing

Pedroia flies out to Moss

0-0 end of the third, LaRoche Jones Clement due up

(I’m listening to Walk and Neverette now, I can actually tell what’s going on)

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 1:47 PM EST reply actions

great play by Béltre apparently

to backhand a possible double and get Jones out

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 1:52 PM EST reply actions

Clement

pops out to 3B

How about this lineup? Clement cleaning up? DY leading off? I think I’d rather have Tábata or Milledge leading off.

Pirates offense…MIA…again.

by Thunder on Mar 13, 2010 1:57 PM EST reply actions

López in to pitch

Gets Martínez. Youkilis grounds out to LaRoche.

Our offense is MIA but at least the pitching looks good today. Would have been happier if Maholm didn’t walk anyone but one isn’t bad.

Ortiz takes him full

but a foul tip strikeout, end of the fourth 0-0, Milledge, Moss, Tábata due up

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 2:01 PM EST reply actions

Díaz

makes a great play up the middle to get Pedroia, still 0-0, end of the 5th. Argenis, Delwin and Andy due up.

Young homers – down the line in RF!

Carrasco pitching

Alvarez in at third, Eric Kratz in for Jaramillo

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

strange shift for Ortiz

Youkilis walked and Martínez out I believe.

Alvarez is in the middle and Díaz stays on the left side of the infield

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

Ortiz walks

Drew grounds out to Clement, runners on second and third.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 2:45 PM EST reply actions

Clement

flies out against the wall to LF

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 2:50 PM EST reply actions

Hitless so far this spring. Really starting to feel for the guy

by Hitman Easler on Mar 13, 2010 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Milledge steals

but Tábata makes an out somehow and going to the bottom of the seventh.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 2:56 PM EST reply actions

Iglesias infield single to Díaz

runners on first and third. Díaz double clutched, probably should have gotten him.

OMG video is finally here in the seventh inning. Thanks NESN.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:02 PM EST reply actions

Myrow at first

Jakubauskas pitching…who can’t locate and walks Kalish to load the bases

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:05 PM EST reply actions

Hulett

singles to center, Gorkys’ throw is a bit late, two runs in.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:08 PM EST reply actions

Dusty Brown

flies to right center for easy sac fly. Red Sox now 3-1, just one out. They’ve chased out Jakubauskas.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:12 PM EST reply actions

ARGHHHHHHHHHH

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:20 PM EST reply actions

Kratz walks to start the eighth

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:25 PM EST reply actions

Díaz makes an out, Young flies out to center on 3-1 pitch. Alvarez up to bat with two outs, Kratz still on first.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions

Pearce

hits a double off the top of the left field wall! Alvarez to third.

It was a breaking ball?!?

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions

Pearce doubles high off the wall

3-2, second and third. Red Sox LF made a nice play to get the carom in quickly.

by Traco Bucco on Mar 13, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions

nice shot to the Hooters sign

trying to resist the urge to joke about that

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Myrow

looks overmatched. Lazy fly ball to center. 3-2 Pirates, bottom of the eighth upcoming.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Navarro

crushes double to left center off Powell, they get the ball in well to stop the triple.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:40 PM EST reply actions

Alvarez

catches soft line drive from Iglesias. Two down.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:44 PM EST reply actions

flyout

end of the eighth, Pirates’ last chance here: Van Every, Jones, Hernández due up.

Van Every beaned.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:47 PM EST reply actions

(shakes head)

three outs in one play (I don’t think it qualifies as a triple play)

Gorkys lines out to short, Van Every doubled up at second, Jones almost tripled at first, but throw is wide. Jones slowly attempts to get to second but ball arrives at second to tag him out there.

It’s just spring training but that is a terrible way to end a game.

by poorboywilly on Mar 13, 2010 3:54 PM EST reply actions

Yeah--that's a triple play

Gorkys hit it on the nose, at least. A couple of steps to the left and it’s a game-tying base hit.
