Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Raise the Jolly Roger

What do you expect to see this year at PNC Park.  Maybe a monster blast from Jones into the river?  McCutchen swippin bases all year long?  Alvarez making his debut?  How about Lincoln, D.McCutchen, Tabata, all making strong showings this year?  Here is what i want to see at PNC Park this year, i want to see a ton of baseball fans cheering on a Pirates team with a bright future.  I want to hear chants inning after inning, and I want people to be excited about the potential in this team.  Hopefully these young guys will have a good crowd to play in front of this year.  it would certainly make it all the more worth its while.

Progress..

This is the 1st season in a long time I have been legitimately excited, not because I think we’re going to win the pennant, but because we will get to watch alot of, hopefully, pieces to the puzzle develop.

I REALLY want to see…

1. Jones become a long term solution to the power outage the Buccos have faced.
2. Cutch hit for a high average, because we know the speed will be there.
3. Miledge to show some power.
4. And obviously Alvarez, Tabata and Lincoln prove they are going to be stars for the team.

Yep.

Big media market sportscasters/writers only spread the “meaningful games” thing so they have an excuse to vote for hometown guys over better-qualified players from teams like ours.

It’s disappointing to see Pittsburghers buy into the hype.

2 games out

of first place on august 31st, now that would make me happy.

by wishiewashie on Mar 14, 2010 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe so.

But they wouldn’t be any more “meaningful” than any other August games.

really like that answer haha, kinda not expecting anyone to say that

I'd like to see...

Andy breakout and live up to his hype! I’d also like to see Morton develop into a frontline starter.

I want to see us draft Tim Tebow!

Oh wait, wrong forum.

I want the Milledge-McCutchen-Jones outfield to make everyone forget the Bay-McLouth-Nady outfield.

Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89

Why can't Mendy bust a long TD run? We could use it.

by wg1of5 on Mar 13, 2010 10:51 PM EST reply actions

What's that?

Bay-McLouth-Nady? What’s that? I never heard of that!

by IAPiratesFan on Mar 14, 2010 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Got a game lined up!

I just bought some cheap tix in the bleachers at the Giants/Pirates game in ATT Park. We have the front row in left-centerfield, perfect for watching Cutch and Milledge. I’m bringing my camera and my mitt, although you have to hit it a long way for it to go out there. I’ll be the only Pirate fan but, I’ll have my hat and my Clemente jersey!

I want to see the pitching staff solidify, and that will cause the rest of the team to rally around being in every game.

by Larry Harrell on Mar 14, 2010 12:10 AM EST reply actions

Were those the goldstar tickets? I bought a bunch of those.

A friend of mine was Jeff Clement’s neighbor when they were growing up as kids (they are the same age). The two of us are gonna go and cheer on Clement. Maybe he’ll hit a homerun and we’ll catch it.

I'd like to see the Pirates play a national televised game...

Can’t even recall the last time we’ve played one…If we were playing one that would probably mean it was a meaningful game which would be a plus too. You think they would let the Pirates host a national televised game just because of our stadium…

And also; I’d like to hear some optimism from people…gets kind’ve old hearing people bash the Pirates over, and over again; especially when they know nothing about baseball. The current team does’nt even resemble any of the teams that have been losing for 17 years. I’d just like to see people give these new/young guys a chance…

Hope I don’t get flammed for saying that…

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

I wonder if any NFL team has gone 8 years since their last appearance on Sunday or Monday Night Football. But ya know if Miller and Morgan came to Pittsburgh for a game, they’d just talk about how the Pirates aren’t any good because they traded away all their best players…

by IAPiratesFan on Mar 14, 2010 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought about that after I made my post...

I’m really just getting sick of seeing Yankees v Boston, Yankees v Angels, Yankees v Mets, etc..I know that’s what the majority of the people want to see, and it’s basically like watching an all star game when the Yankees take the field, but even with my Pirates biasm aside; I’d still like to see a Royals v Indians, Reds v DBacks, Braves v Nationals, etc…

These teams obvisouly don’t have the records that other teams do, but that does’nt mean they don’t have good young talent that people want to see…I think they should definetely institute something that gurantees every team would host atleast one national televised game on ESPN…

by FusilliJerry88 on Mar 14, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah.

I bet those ESPN execs love the money they bring in from broadcasting about 10 Yankees-Red Sox games on Sunday Night Baseball every year. That’s the reason. If the Pirates were a money maker like the Yankees, they’d put them on TV every other weekend regardless of the losing.

by IAPiratesFan on Mar 14, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

as far as individuals go...

I hope to see McCutchen with a .400 OBP…I think that would then put him in the top tier players in the league. With him being on base at that rate that would then hopefully have a direct corrolation to him stealing 40+ SB, scoring 100+ runs, and possibly becoming a +6-7 WAR player…

As far as the minor leagues go…I’d like to see Gorkys Hernandez, and Tim Alderson live up to their hype before coming to Pittsburghs organization. Hernandez could become a legitimate prospect again with his excellent speed/defense if he could learn how to hit again, and Alderson can become a top of the rotation guy with his excellent command/breaking stuff if he could somehow gain some velocity this year…

Pedro Alvarez

putting up some good power numbers that gets the fan base excited for ’11 and several years beyond.

I'd definitely like to see...

1. Morton turn his “best stuff on the staff” into at least a #2 starter ceiling
2. Milledge develop into at least a 20/20 player with + defense
3. Zach Duke put up similar numbers to 09’s first half.
4. I think I’m just asking for too much on this one but…some positive production out of Crosby/Cedeno.
5. Andy to have a 25 hr , .850+ OPS season

How about this inning?

3 homeruns off one pitcher. All I can think is “Wow, this pitcher sucks.”

by IAPiratesFan on Mar 14, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

crosby, DY and Pearce= that feared legion of homerun hitters…

DY, btw, is making a pretty strong case for himself, as has Crosby (wrt being a starter, I mean). Be interesting to see how they take things from here.

by BurgherKing on Mar 14, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Although the Yankee pitchers after CC looked like major scrubs. That’s one reason why it’s hard to read into spring training performance. It’s good that Crosby is swinging the bat well, but I’m not sure if he’s all of a sudden a great starting candidate. The team probably feels the same way.

"lincoln logs"

I’d love to see Lincoln log some positive innings for the Pirates by the middle/end of the year…Any MLB production out of him would help ease the sting from our early 2000’s run of drafting pitchers early and having them equate to squat…Why is he not in the running for the 5th rotation gig? He’s gotta have more upside than McCutchen & Hart right?

Benny Benack III

by benny benack on Mar 14, 2010 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

He has more upside...

than McCutchen for sure. He would seem to have a higher floor than Hart with almost as much upside. He’s not in the running because he needs some more time in AAA to polish off his changeup. He doesn’t have enough lateral movement on his fastball, though it has good sinking action, to get away with just a fastball and curve. If all goes well he’ll be a mid-season call up.

by Slick1 on Mar 14, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't ask for much ...

but I’d like to see ballpark beer for maybe $3 — East End on tap — and hot dogs for $1. And nice cool sunny weather every time I have tickets. And all the Miss Mount Lebanon contestants in the next section over, dressed to go to SandCastle straight from the game. And Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers in the HoF Club after EVERY game. (Well, maybe Billy Price and Norm and FOX Japan once in a while.) And either an 11-1 win with Zach Duke getting the last out and Andy laRoche going 5-for-5 with two bombs and the cycle this time, or an 8-7 win with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, walk-off homer if I can get it. Barring that, I’d like to see a no-hitter, by either team, played in 2:10. I’d like to see free transit on the T for everyone with a ticket. Barring that, I’d like to see teleportation between my house and the ballpark, 80 miles away. I’d like to see a foul ball land in the seat beside me and magically just stick there, until I picked it up. I’d like to see you buy the next round. And the one after that. I’d like to have Lanny sitting next to me, telling stories about nearly 30 years of traveling with the team. With the Gunner (not THAT Gunner, THE Gunner) on the radio doing play by play, one more time. Preferably alive, but I’d settle for ZombieGunner. I’d like to see the Miss Mount Lebanon contestants give me a baby oil massage between every half-inning. I’d like to see the Miss Mount Lebanon contestants get drunk and flash/moon the crowd (actually, just me) every half inning. I’d like to have Charlie and Wilbur and Vlad and Patthatt and all the rest of you there with me every time I go to a game. I’d like to see a FatHead’s across the street from the park. Even better, inside the park. I’d like to see every day be Fan Appreciation Day.

Ah, that’s probably enough for now.

east end is on tap in the park at club 3000 (wherever that is) with monkey boy hefeweisen and big hop ipa. not sure about the prices but i’d bet it’s closer to a 10-spot than a fiver.

by johnnycuff on Mar 15, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn't know that.

Now I have to find Club 3000, get me some Big Hop.

by bucdaddy on Mar 15, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Now that I think of it...

I’d like to see a BucsDugout night at PNC Park. When is that happening? (I’d prefer the weekend of July 23-25 so that I could see the Steve Miller Band).
