Phillies at Pirates

We continue to draw big guns in the pitching deparment with Roy Halladay on the mound.  Halladay is the perfect example of why the Pirates can't just go out and get some starting pitching.  He's making $20 million per year.  No way we can afford to pay that much to just one person.  Lineups:

Phillies

  1. Jimmy Rollins SS
  2. Plácido Polanco 3B
  3. Chase Utley 2B
  4. Ryan Howard 1B
  5. Jayson Werth DH
  6. Ben Francisco LF
  7. John Mayberry Jr. CF
  8. Ross Gload RF
  9. Carlos Ruiz C

Pitching:  Roy Halladay

Pirates

  1. Andrew McCutchen CF
  2. Akinori Iwamura DH
  3. Garrett Jones RF
  4. Ryan Doumit C
  5. Lastings Milledge RF
  6. Jeff Clement 1B
  7. Andy LaRoche 3B
  8. Delwyn Young 2B
  9. Ramón Vázquez SS

Pitching:  Zach Duke, Evan Meek, Jeremy Powell, Javier López, Jack Taschner

Ross Gload

grounds first pitch to SS. I think that took maybe six pitches? Hard to tell for sure on the radio but it was maybe quicker than even Halladay’s inning.

Doumit, Milledge, Clement due up

Ah, love a good Nolan Ryan story. Favorite player ever.

by Schide on Mar 15, 2010 1:29 PM EDT reply actions

Milledge

RBI single to the right side.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

Milledge is hitting pretty nicely so far this spring.

Clement, not so much. But we’re not terribly concerned with that right now.

by Schide on Mar 15, 2010 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

LaRoche

flies out to center. End of the second, 1-0 Pirates.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

apparently

he was running under a popup, I don’t think they are entirely sure what happened either. He ended up on the side of the mound though, they say.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

they say

“injured his right angle, it looked as though he stepped awkwardly on the mound”

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Uh-oh, Polanco’s hurt.

by Schide on Mar 15, 2010 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

polanco appears injured

lets trade vazquez right there! he can switch uniforms and take 3B instead of the AB

Young

ridiculous, gets doubled off a little popup to Rollins

Cutch Ked looking

Duke walks Francisco now. Bases juiced.

Gload grounds out to Scrappy. 1-1 game, Iwamura, Jones, Doumit due up in the bottom half.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

apparently draws Halladay’s first walk of the spring.

Jones Ks looking.

Milledge swinging on strikes. End of the fourth, 1-1.

chops to LaRoche, fielders choice get Ruiz.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Meek called for a balk

apparently he’s not sure what he did to get it called.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

Valdez

lines to left, Milledge dives but misses. 2-1 Phillies.

They’re talking about the Howard/Pujols “trade rumor”. Yeah, I would trade Howard for Pujols too. Of course, it’s not going to happen.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

i m not so sure

of course, it wont be howard for pujols straight up, but if Philly’s willing to give up a good bit aside from howard… it could well happen

by BurgherKing on Mar 15, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The idea is that if the Cards can’t extend Pujols, they could entertain the trade if they could get a deal done with Howard. I have to think that the Cards will find the money to keep him though. It will probably take ARod money to do it. Can they put $30M to one player? Seems like they might have to do one of those contracts where they spread the money out over years after he’s done playing. It would probably be worth it to have one of the best players ever to be in that uni his whole career.

by MarkInDallas on Mar 15, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

a trade could happen if they don’t extend him. I honestly don’t think that’s going to happen though. I guess in these economics, however…

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard

beats the shift, 3-1 Phillies. Jaramillo can’t get the pinch runner, who steals second.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

Werth

RBI single… 4-1 Phillies.

by pittbluedevil on Mar 15, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

All this off of Meek?

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

by cocktailsfor2 on Mar 15, 2010 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

I thought they subbed him

after the Howard hit but I must have missed who

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

LaRoche grounds out, two down. Polanco injury is now called a “strained right knee”.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Scrappy

takes a walk. Vázquez called strike three. Pirates offense in full retreat. End of the fifth, 4-1 Phillies.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

Guess it was all Meek

At least he didn’t walk anyone. I’ll take getting hit around a bit right now if you don’t walk anyone. Mayberry grounds to LaRoche. Gload pops to Young.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

MLB.com boxscore now showing Jeremy Powell on the mound for us…

Anyone know anything about this guy? Apparently he’s been in Japan for the last 8 seasons?
When/why did we pick him up?

by pittbluedevil on Mar 15, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Ruiz walks

Clement fields a grounder and on to Powell for the putout. Quick inning but a walk to the nine hole that probably wasn’t necessary.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Jones

makes it three up three down. Offense sounds like it is low on iron or something. Heading to the seventh.

Neil Walker at third, Chase D’arnaud at short, Doug Bernier at 2B, Pearce at first, Tábata in left, Raynor in center, Moss in right. Powell still pitching, Jaramillo presumably still behind the plate.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Ransom

HR, “very much windblown”. 5-1 Phillies.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

three quick outs

I think Walker fielded them all including tough in-between hop they say. Heading to bottom of the seventh, Jaramillo, Tábata, Pearce due up assuming all substitutions were straight up.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Jarmillo grounds out to second

Tábata chops out to third. Pearce flies out to center. These guys must have an early engagement this evening.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

López pitching

nice grounder fielded by Walker, that’s four assists in a row to Walker. Mayberry called out on strikes.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

Gload

grounds out to Bernier. Heading to bottom of eight, Walker, Bernier, d’Arnaud due up.

by poorboywilly on Mar 15, 2010 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

Walker called out on strikes

Bernier out. D’Arnaud grounds out, end of the eighth.
