Not only is it a good article, but it also provides an outstanding example of the Pirates’ financial acumen during the McClatchy/Bonifay/Littlefield days:

Purchase price in 1999: $1.00
Rule 5 revenue in 2002: $50,000.00

Great story

I kinda hope he gets a spot start so we can see him hit.

I believe they’ll do the same with Jakubaukus as they did with Clagget, Karstens & Jackson, take him off the 40, nobody claims him, put him in AAA.

Ascanio to 60 day DL

No waivers unless the 40 man is wrong.

But ...

CAN he actually hit? The article never tells me.

by Zadoras on Mar 17, 2010 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

For his minor league career...

…he’s hit .077/.077/.115 in 33 PA. In the majors, he’s hitless in 10 PA.

That’s a pretty small sample, but the evidence isn’t promising.

correction

It should be $.225. Doesn’t his agent pull in %10? Maybe he has the Boras plan and he clears $.2375 . . . then again, Boras would have figured out a way to get him a bigger cut of that $1

by chicos_pants on Mar 17, 2010 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

Technically...

He gets the quarter and then pays his agent. So he nets like 22.5 cents, but he is paid a 25 by the team

The glare of the spotlight is harsh, and the pressure that success breeds immense. We revere our heroes, but expect much. And criticism can come as easily as praise.

Who's to say that he had an agent back then?

A lot of guys in indy ball don’t – there just isn’t enough money there to support professional career management.
