Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

Let The Chatter Begin

Facing the Manatees today, top prospect Pedro Alvarez went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.  If he hits like this throughout spring training, do we dare start him on Opening Day?  He is definitely capable of starting, but do financial issues outweigh the team's devotion to winning a few more ballgames?

Consider this: If Alvarez starts the year in the MLB, we will potentially lose a whole year of his service time.  If we hold him down for 2 months, we get that extra year (hopefully we will be competitive then).  Then again, who says that we can't sign him to an extension like the Rays did with Evan Longoria?  And who says that Pedro will leave after his current contract expires with the Pirates?  Down in Bradenton, tough decisions are looming.

it depends

how much presure NH, JR, and FC feel to have a winning team this year. All of there contracts have not been renewed past this year, and while I think everyone knows it makes the best sense to hold Pedro till June at AAA, everyone also knows how close he is to helping this team (look at what G. Beckam, who was picked a couple spots behind Pedro, has done for the Sox).

I think I was more disappointed with 8 K’s and only 2 walks by our offense against college pitchers, but hey it was only an exhibition game.

I don't think...

that a year of rookie Pedro now would be quite as important as a year of experienced Pedro in five years or so from now.
If he plays as well as everyone says, I don’t think there is any way Boras will allow him to stay in Pittsburgh.

by Matt Morriz on Mar 2, 2010 2:55 PM EST reply actions

Evan Longoria...

If I recall, Tampa held Longoria down for the first two months of the season in which he won rookie of the year. Bringing him up for an extra win, maybe 2, would be pointless.

by goodtymes31 on Mar 2, 2010 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Alvarez is a Boras client

Therefore, no extension ala Longoria.

by biggyv on Mar 2, 2010 3:09 PM EST reply actions

The only question is ...

whether to bring him up June 2010 or June 2011.

Morris

I do realize it was the manatees but how about a Bryan Morris appearance. 1 inning 2 Ks no walks and no hits. Anyone think Bryan will live up to some of hype from when we acquired him?

Let's see Pedro Alvarez

keep his weight down and perform well with the glove for a couple of months before moving him into the Pittsburgh lineup.

If he hadn’t missed the final months of ’08, he would probably be ready for Opening Day in Piitsburgh.

Yep.

Funny how that works out, isn’t it?

by Vlad on Mar 3, 2010 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

not sure about this

assuming everything else that happened in his professional career still happened if he started in 08, I m guessing they’d have given him longer at high-A.

by BurgherKing on Mar 3, 2010 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

You can argue...

…that if not for the post-signing drama, he wouldn’t have reported to his first spring training as a big fat blimp, and thus wouldn’t have struggled at Lynchburg the way he did. As such, he might have gotten promoted from A+ sooner, rather than later.

by Vlad on Mar 3, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

I understand

Pedro’s “double” was actually a misplayed wind blown pop up. So we might be getting ahead of things here. After all, Pearce and Moss went back to back. I don’t hear an outcry for them in the opening day lineup.

by MarkInDallas on Mar 2, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Are you serious right now?

Pedro is going to be a stud in this league. Nobody wants Pearce and Moss in the lineup because we know they suck. End of story. It’s time to get these “projects” on the bench and get the sure things up to the big club. I don’t think we should put much stock in what anybody did today. We were playing a JUCO team after all. But I will say, if Pedro tears it up throughout spring training, then he should be our opening day starter. And I don’t really want to hear about how his defense may not be ready yet. Let’s be honest – we drafted Pedro because he’s an offensive machine that could make the jump to the big leagues quickly because of his bat. If management sees in him what they need to in spring training, there’s no reason for him to stay in the minors, and there’s no damn way Andy LaRoche should be blocking him.

Oh wait, there is this thing called money and we are the Pirates. In that case, Pedro could hit 1.000 to go along with 15 bombs in spring training and he’d still probably start in Triple-A.

by mspirate on Mar 2, 2010 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Ahh no...

…don’t think so, but this has been covered already & has little to do with the budget. A year of service time is far more valuable than starting the season on the MLB roster, regardless of how wonderful Alvarez might perform in ST. The time spent in AAA will be mutually benifical for both Pedro, and the team. Good things come to those who wait, and besides, I’m actually looking forward to seeing if LaRoche continues to improve his hitting like he did at the end of last season.

You don't understand...

He said,

End of story.

That means end of story.
And when he says,
“If management sees in him what they need to in spring training, there’s no reason for him to stay in the minors …”

it doesn’t matter what the people running the team think (per Finder’s column yesterday, [emphasis mine]):
They prefer that their prospects spend sufficient time at each level, master various objectives and move upward and onward. Alvarez ripped up high-Class A and Class AA last year, after an adjustment at first. He is expected to do the same at Class AAA, where another adjustment will be needed.

I believe Pedro hit .500 last spring training.

And he clearly wasn’t ready for the bigs. I’m very interested to see how he fares in AAA. I want him to be prepared, no, over-prepared, before he steps on the grass at PNC. There is every reason to doubt he will have as productive a season as Andy LaRoche right now if he took the field on game 1 this year.

And, yes, I was being serious when I said his double was a misplayed pop up today.

Also

Apparently Alvarez’s reported HR off Hart in live BP was misreported as well. It apparently rolled to the wall or something. Pedro is becoming like the Pittsburgh Paul Bunyan. He’s going to be reported next with a blue ox and 25 feet tall.

Pedro Alvarez is half-man half-beast monstrosity born to play baseball with the grit of Rocky and the heart of Rudy… AND DON’T TELL ME OTHERWISE

Wow

I hadn’t seen that. And to think Dave Parker was crucified in Pittsburgh for flipping his glove when he caught a fly ball. I’d hate to see what would happen to ARod. Thank God we don’t have to find out.

thinking about 1960

You’re right to be a little petrified. If you’re looking for something more pleasant to consider, you might want to pick up my latest book, Kiss It Good-bye, a loving look at the 1960 championship team and the city whose spirits they lifted.
It’s available now at bookstores and on amazon.com. Check it out.
