Pirates Defeat Manatees in Tuneup Game

As they should, but still. Pedro Alvarez went 3-4 with a double, and Steve Pearce, Brandon Moss and Class AAA catcher Erik Kratz hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the 3rd. Bryan Morris pitched a scoreless inning for the win. The Pirates mostly left their major leaguers on the sidelines, so this was basically a AAA team; Moss' presence in this game might show how little the Pirates think of him at this point.

Congratulations to the Manatees' B.J. Zimmerman, who went 2-for-3 with a homer (off Jeff Sues) and a walk; that'll be a great story for the grandkids.

God help me

I’m kind of excited just reading this little recap.

I’m a big Spring Training fan – P&C is on my calendar as soon as I can find the date – and so, in some sense, this is normal for me. But, even so, I think things start to get interesting this year, and reading about Pedro and Gorkys and so on gets my blood pumping, at least a bit.

I didn’t say anything on any of those threads but, honestly, I totally get the “dynasty” comment – if this group of players comes together, if we have a real run of success (not like the Brewers’ pseudo-run), then 2010 will mark the start of that dynasty, just as surely as the early-90s dynasty was marked by that (essentially meaningless) game in which they beat the Mets and Gooden mocked them for getting excited about it. That was a bad team, but they knew they’d turned the corner.

I don’t think 2010 is the year we turn that particular corner, but it’s the year our upward trajectory* begins.

  • decorum requires that I note that, from 2009, upward is the only feasible trajectory

Wonder what was up...

…with Sues’s command? Two walks and a HBP, in addition to the homer.

Don't hold your breath.....

Before it’s over with an All Star Little League Team could beat the Pirates.

sludge!

Good to see you. How’s your winter? Sucks? Yeah, mine too. But look, they’re throwing baseballs in anger, or at least in Bradenton, Scottsdale and Winter Haven. That pointless, useless, two-week-long commercial called the Olympics is over, and it’s time for games that count, games that matter.

So raise the Jolly Roger and hoist a Penn Pilsner, it’s wabbit season!

Link to the State College for Manatees in Florida

http://www.mccfl.edu/

Then go under student life f/Athletics, then baseball. That tells you only about the college’s baseball program, which isn’t bad for a two-year college for lumbering, slow creatures that can’t run on land – hey, wait, did I just describe Ronnie Paulino?!

The local newspaper write-up is here…it doesn’t say anything that’s not posted up above, but if you go back to the sports page, there’s a nice article about a long-time Pirates fan.

Please let the season start soon…..

Morris

How about Bryan Morris, 1 inning 2 Ks no hits, no walks. Hopefully he turns it around this year and becomes the prospect that everyone was so hyped about
