Nice preview. Compare, though:
The Pirates might still dump an expiring contract, but they won’t be making any more inventory-building deals, Huntington said.
“Our belief is that we’re closer to being on the other side of that,” he said. “Now we’ve got enough depth that if the right situation’s there, we could make a trade to add to this club.”

We don’t need to [trade veterans for prospects] any more," general manager Neal Huntington said. “We’ve got enough depth in the system that is has to make sense from a baseball standpoint.”
The first quote makes it seem like we’re done building through trades and will let these guys play, but the second makes it sound like we’d take anyone for the right package. Given the Pirates will almost definitely be a losing team this year, I think the second approach is completely legit.
So let’s say the Pirates end up getting a great deal for, say, Doumit. Will people point out these quotes as another version of the “McLouth is a pillar” (or whatever it was) quote?
Yeah, probably.
But who cares? If they get a good deal, they get a good deal. Fortunately the FO doesn’t make their moves based on what’s popular.
If the team is not competitive
then you have to keep making move to improve it. I personally don’t see Jaramillo as a starting catcher, don’t expect Tony Sanchez to be MLB ready next year, and think that Doumit can be very valuable to the club for several years. However, that’s not the only way to do it.
